Ive worn glasses since second grade and have needed a stronger prescription almost annually. This means Ive been to quite a few different optometrists in different cities over the years. Village Eyecare really stands out, and has been fantastic to work with. This was my first visit to an optometrist since coming off my parents insurance and I was debating whether I should go LensCrafters or Costco to get an exam. Someone from my department recommended Village Eyecare, and I was surprised to find out that an exam from them (glasses+contacts fitting for an astigmatism) cost roughly the same out of pocket as both LensCrafters and Costco. I called in for an appointment and ended up getting seen the same day due to a cancellation, so Im not sure how long it typically takes to get an appointment for an exam. Admittedly, I know very little about optometry, but their technology for pre-exam tests seems really advanced. This was my first time getting my eye pressure tested with a hand-held machine, and I found it much less jarring than the stationary one most places have. All of the tests were explained to me in detail, and I didnt feel like I was being rushed through an assembly line like I had at other places I have been. My appointment was with Dr. Koutnik, who is extremely attentive and seems very passionate about her field. She spent over an hour with me trying various contact brands and length-of-use combinations and even stayed past closing to make sure all my questions were answered. She special ordered some trial lenses that she thought may work better with my (very strong) prescription, and I was fitted for them a week later when they arrived. They send out text notifications for upcoming appointments, which I like. In addition to the amount of effort they put in to making sure my needs were met, this is the first place I have ever been to that actively (and voluntarily!) helped me navigate insurance. Because they serve a lot of UChicago students and employees, they are familiar with the benefits of their specific insurance, and pointed out that one option would save me a lot if I signed up for it in the next enrollment period. In short, Im glad I took a chance as I have found my eye care center for as long as I live in Chicago.

I had called with an emergency and was told I could be seen right away. When calling, I had asked if my insurance was "in-network" and I was told it was. I mentioned that I had a lunch "break" and was hoping to be seen in that time, and the lady said, "Yeah, no problem - come over now." I made it there in 10 minutes, filled out my paperwork, and 15 minutes later, someone opens the window to say, "Youre not in network, therefore will have to pay out of network prices. Are you ok with that?" No, Im not - thats why I ASKED first! But being urgent, I just asked, "Well, could someone see my right away?" And the lady responded, "Oh, werent you told that our scheduled patience have priority over walk-ins? It will be a 45 minute wait." SCREW THAT - I dont have time for that! Thats why I called ahead and asked the questions I did! I was hoping I had found myself a new optometrist, but I was way wrong. If the receptionists are that incompetent, I cant imagine how the doctor is that runs that place!

I dont usually leave reviews online but I was so unbelievably impressed with this office I just have to. I made an appointment online (at least I thought I did) but it turns out it hadnt gone through. They fit me in anyway within 15 minutes of the appointment I had thought Id scheduled (even though they were very busy) and were utterly gracious about it. From the ladies at the front desk to the doctor himself, I have never in my life felt more welcomed at a medical facility, and I was really listened to. I would even say I had fun! I got advice about medical conditions, realistic answers, and incredibly helpful tips that no other optometrist ever before offered. I walked out with better eyesight than Ive had in over 15 years, and no matter where I move in Chicago, you can be sure Ill make the trek back to Hyde Park to see them every year.

This was my first time going here and the expereince was not good. The mexican guy with the nose ring was very rude and did not offer any good customer service. (I didnt even get his name). He sat there and gossiped with the black woman when I walked in. Then instead of assisting me with picking glasses he just sat the containers of glasses I can choose from and went back to gossiping with the woman. He messed up my address in the system and when i noticed the error he got a attitude when I asked for the correct information on my receipt. The place is small and with bad customer service like this Im afraid I wont be returning.

Love is the right word. Yes, I love this place! I was a Illinois Eyecare patient, but when I changed insurance, I was informed Village Eyecare was in network. The Optometrist who serviced me graduated from Illinois Eyecare, so I was very comfortable with the exam procedure. Everyone was kind and helpful. I had a bit of trouble with my insurance, but it wasnt their fault. So, I had to pay out of pocket for the glasses-the exam was covered. I think that this will be resolved with an In-Network reimbursement. I hope!

Very Very friendly staff and cozy environment. Very clean and complimentary coffee/tea and water while you wait or look for glasses. Not that you wait for a long time; they move efficient and fast. I had the pleasure of seeing Dr. Rupp and she was so sweet and thorough wth my exam. Village Eye care also have some very unique style glasses which most private practices but I absolutely love them. The husband/wife that owns the line of practices are also very very nice which is ALWAYS a plus

Best eye exam Ive had in years! All staff members were pleasant and friendly from the moment I walked in. They pre-screen you before the doctor sees you to have a baseline to work from. They explained what each machine did when asked. The doctor took her time with the exam and didnt rush just to get you in and out and see more patients. The doctor also discussed the prescreen results. I guess there was a reason why I did not make appointments at other eye exam locations.

I was hesitant to continue going to Village Eye Care when they were taken over by a new owner several years ago. I am really happy that I stayed with them. The doctors are knowledgeable and thorough, they have a great selection of high end and reasonably priced eyewear and all of my questions were answered to my satisfaction. The support staff is top notch, professional and friendly as well! I would definitely recommend Village Eye Care!
