Please take this review as what it is: a review of the lies told to be by a customer service person, who happens to be in management, not the glasses themselves, or my eye exam or the other friendly folk who tried to assist. I first learned of this place when I checked my eye insurance companys website by my zip code. I eventually sent my husband an email about their irregular hours so he could get his contact lenses and when I finally decided to take the plunge, it was with full confidence. Not only that but yesterday as I was leaving from dropping off my son at school, another mom touted this as a great place to get glasses. I was really looking forward to overspending here but their customer service started out weird after my exam and got a bit rushed and they made me feel they were "too busy" to show me around at all because I had insurance and a HSA card and was not a spend-my-last dime cash customer. It was that attitude that made me start realizing that I might have to find a back-up place to go to just in case. The staff could had no idea about a specific brand of frame that our insurance (VSP) had touted as a premium kids frame. Instead more than once, I was told to look over other frames, and quite frankly, my son is far too rough on glasses to buy designer or pricey frames of any kind so I was just going to patiently wait to see what they had for us. Instead of finally locating the frames, I was eventually told they were "definitely" at their Thomasville Rd. location in a labeled box. So, we drove over there and waited...and waited...and a friendly staff member tried to assist and then my children were antsy and hungry and so I used my best judgment and left...we went by a few more eyewear places and returned back to The Hourglass on Lafayette because I was ticked that I wasted so much time. I came by and politely vented and within minutes of informing the manager that I would be buying glasses myself, viola, the specific frames my insurance touted as the best for kids were somehow magically produced as I made my order. We ordered the specific name-brand set for my son and the manager tried to convince me to buy a $40 warranty for his, after I asked him if it automatically came with one. And I decided, I would think about it, since he said I had 30 days to decided to purchase that one-year warranty. We returned the next day to pick up our new glasses and no sooner did we leave then my son broke a handle on the way home. (Which is why I am glad I got him the glasses we did and not something pricier, as he has broken very expensive frames and lenses throughout his young life.) I returned the frame knowing that the handle was going to probably have to be replaced and was told by the staff to go get my HSA Visa card and theyd hook me right up with that one-year warranty. When I returned the manager decided hed personally handle it. YES, the same man who tried to sell me the warranty the day before and said I had 30 days to decide. So, I am thinking he is going to allow me to pay and leave but oH NO...it was much more complicated. You see, he had to call today to see if the "special" frames were covered by an additional warranty or would he have to outright charge me for another frame and all. I guess you can see where this scenario is going and I had to hide my laughter at his used car salesman tactic. He hung up from VSP and turned and told me, (just what Id suspected) that hed give me an additional frame for 20% but could not give me a warranty! Yes, my sons glasses were good to purchase a warranty the day before when he was trying to get a bigger sale in but the next day once the glasses broke the 30 days to "think about it" no longer applied. I am not upset about the fact that he said one thing and then bait and switched his tactics to suit whatever he needed to later. What I am is annoyed and peeved at the whole run-around, and lies to write a google review to warn other consumers.

Im not sure if its the lack of recent reviews, or because people these days are absolutely ridiculous (or maybe a little of both), but I had a phenomenal experience at the hour glass. At any rate, I have to say a few things: 1) I avoided this place like the plague for years due to the Google reviews. 2) I have been to several stores in search of frames at a price I would be happy with. 3) I have not personally seen a doctor at this location, as Ive been seeing Dr. Hughes at Hatcher opticians for the past several years and trust his methods. In recent years, I have not been entirely impressed by Hatcher Opticians selection of frames, however. My vision care plan only allows certain providers, which all generally carry the same frames. I visited 5 competing stores in Tallahassee with my girlfriend (in one day) searching for the right frame and the best price possible (since my insurance covers predetermined amounts, so it basically comes down to the cost of my lenses, which are a fairly high prescription strength). I must say that I was very disappointed in the lack of customer service in the majority of the competitors. That being said, by the time I gathered the nerve to visit Hour Glass (our final stop), I was not expecting much (in terms of selection or customer service). It was sort of a hail mary, a last ditch effort, since I was disappointed with everywhere else I had been. We walked into the Hour Glass and were IMMEDIATELY greeted by a young lady by the name of Hannah. She asked how we were doing, and asked if we needed help with anything. I told her I was just looking around at their selection and my insurance wouldnt allow me new lenses for another month. She sat me down at the nearest table and computer, walked around the store and carried an extra chair around the store to bring for my girlfriend. She was very attentive and in tune with the style of frames I was looking for. She provided very helpful feedback on certain frames and answered all of my questions in a very professional manner. I decided on a frame and Hannah quoted multiple scenarios for me, based on what my insurance would cover. If she didnt have an answer to my many questions, she would ask someone that had the answer. She was very knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. Even though she knew I wasnt buying glasses that day, she spent a great deal of time with us, making sure I found a frame I was happy with, and that I left the store with all of my questions answered. I have to say, I was not expecting this type of treatment, and would highly recommend asking for Hannah or Scott. I walked in on a Saturday afternoon at 2pm, without an appointment, and sat down with her immediately. A 5 start treatment, and a 5 star selection of frames - thank you very much!

I cannot stand this place. Dr. Harmon is awesome, but the staff is rude and they do NOT try to work with you. Ive been having issues with my eyes for the past 2 months and finally got a new contact prescription once my eyes were able to tolerate contacts. I took 2 unopened boxes that I bought from them a year ago to exchange for my new prescription and they would not take it. Why? Because in the 2 months that it took my eyes to calm down after 4 doctors visits, I couldnt get a new prescription to switch the boxes. And I made a check mark on the boxes. A check mark to know which prescription is for the right eye. My old prescription was for monthly lenses. My new prescription is for daily lenses. I have astigmatism. My old lenses cost about $60 per box. The new lenses are significantly more because they are daily lenses for astigmatism. I said okay, even if they give me half of what I paid for the lenses I will take it because I know the daily lenses cost a lot. They refuse to take them, but were quick to "offer me a price match" for the new lenses. Really? Why would I give you my money after you refused to even try to work with me? All of you contact lens wearers, Costco beat their price by $20. And you do NOT have to be a member to use the eye center or pharmacy at Costco. Take your money elsewhere and tell the Hour Glass or The Eye Doctor to shove it. BTW, I have gone to them several times in the 7 years I have been in Tallahassee. This was not a 1-time bad experience with them. They are just horrible all around.
