Mighty Mouse
My open letter to save Mart stores: On Sunday april 24th around 6pm in the evening I had just completed a 30 mile bike ride and was looking forward to stopping by your store on first and Bullard on my way home to refill my water bottle and pick up some craft beer to enjoy when I got home. Upon entering the store I was looking for the restrooms and could not locate them so I approached the security guard who seemed to have already been very intimidatingly staring me down and asked him where the restrooms were. He immediately ignored my question and instead insisted that I remove my backpack and leave it with him while I shop. I find it extremely embarrassing and infuriating that I am profiled and singled out for wearing a backpack. Mind you I am also wearing a bike helmet which should make it pretty clear that Im not a high schooler looking to shoplift candy bars. I can assume with almost 100% certainty that no woman that enters your store is ever asked to leave her purse at the front desk. This discriminatory policy is outrageous. I chose to commute via bike to stay in good shape and save money. And a backpack is necessary to keep my belongings on me when I ride. This is not the first time I have been to your store I regularly ride out of my way to visit this particular store because I enjoy the variety of craft beer available. I have been in your store many many times before with my backpack on and no one had any issues with it. In fact i always enjoyed the attitude and knowledge of your employees in general. What a disgusting policy to have where you would single out people who choose to be pedestrians. Do I look like a thief! I work hard for my money and have never stolen a thing in my life and to assert that I find ridiculous. So you may be thinking its a small request and I am overreacting. My backpack has my $400 phone $200 in cash and other items that I wish to keep safe with me. My biking shorts do not even have pockets so how am I able to even pay for my items that I purchase? How am I able to produce ID without my wallet? As a private business I believe you have the right to discriminate against whoever you wish and they have the right to not spend their money at your store. However that doesnt make it the right thing to do. This backpack policy would never be tolerated in a major city where cars are the norm. And your store is not the only store Ive experienced this form of discrimination at. Given the situation with your ridiculous policy I would like to inform you that I will never spend a single cent at any of your stores or even attend the save Mart center for that matter. I think you may be able to tell how profoundly embarrassing of an experience this was for me by the fact that I took the time to write you. I understand that shoplifting can have a large impact on operating costs and raise the prices for the average HONEST consumer like myself. However I think profiling people because they look poor or appear to be pedestrians is the wrong way to go about it. At the very least profile the women as well as statisticly they shoplift more than men. A purse seems a much more convenient way to steal dont you think? I urge you to reevaluate your policys and maybe give your security some training in customer service. Thanks for taking the time to listen to my concerns. Sincerely, Ken J.
