I went to the Home Depot looking for a few items for my patio. (A few plants, soil, pots, fertilizer etc..) A store associate named Lonnie saw how befuddled I was (no gardening experience) as I looked around the gardening department and he approached me and asked if I needed any help (which I did). He took the time to show me everything I needed AND explained how to set up and use these items. This in itself was a pleasant experience. However, the reason I am writing this review now is not because of this one instance, it is because of what happened on my following visits. When I came back to the Home Depot to get a few more items, I happened to see the associate that helped me the last time. When he saw me, to my absolute surprise (instead of just giving me a simple nod of acknowledgment) he approached me and treated me as if I was an old friend. He first asked me how I was doing and if everything was going well. Not only did he remember me, but he remembered the project I was working on as well. He asked how everything was going and if I had any questions about anything. He even asked what my name was and introduced himself with a handshake. When I came back a third time I saw Lonnie again, and had a similar positive experience. He again asked how the project was coming along and this time addressed me by my first name, which he somehow remembered! He showed a genuine interest in what I was working on and even asked me to take a few pictures to show him the next time! While Lonnie’s assistance definitely stood out the most, I would also like to say that I had a very positive experience at the Home Depot in general. The staff was extremely helpful in every department, when I passed by a free associate I was always asked if I had any questions or needed help finding anything. The Home Depot staff, especially Lonnie, (who I would now call a friend of mine) made me feel welcome and comfortable. I am absolutely satisfied with the service I received. I had a GREAT experience and I will definitely be going back.

My past experience with Home Depot has been as commonly cited: great selection, IF you know what you want and dont need help picking it out. My standards for service on the floor are high, too -- I am a longtime loyal customer of the Ben Lomond Ace Hardware. However, this Home Depot store must be making some kind of customer service effort recently. They have orange-aproned employees cruising the aisles and asking if they can be of assistance, or sometimes just discreetly watching to see if you look like you need any before approaching. They are remarkably knowledgeable, too -- maybe they have some kind of training program going on? Sometimes they dont know the answer, but they do go and try to find out for you -- their little radios are always busy. Most amazing, though, was the assistance I got from the flooring person, Vern. Vern went above and beyond in my book, not only recommending the products I needed for my tile job, but taking the time to actually teach me the knowledge and skills I needed to be successful as well as being very encouraging for me to tackle it. Right there in the aisle, he gave me extensive advice on my particular application and showed me exactly what to do. When I returned on another day to actually buy the supplies, he fetched a cart, loaded it up with all (but only!) what I needed, and personally hauled it to the checkout for me. He also arranged for another employee to load it in my vehicle, and let me know how to contact him if I had any questions later. Wow. Home Depot got it right when they hired Vern! Ill be back whenever Ace doesnt have what I need.

I give this store a solid "Meh" rating. Its ok. Like any box store they value quantity over selection. They dont always have what you need, but if they do, they have lots of it! The items they have are reasonably priced and they typically have at least a single choice within most quality ranges. Where some stores might have the quality categories of Good/Better/Best this store has ok/good/pretty good. As for the employee knowledge and courtesy, well, its a bit spotty. Some of the employees Ive asked for help are very knowledgeable, helpful, and patient. Others are too busy talking with other employees or have no idea where to find anything in their own workplace. I once asked an employee where to find fuel line for a lawnmower and got the response "Im not sure. Maybe you should ask somebody". He wasnt being rude, just clueless. I will say that the people there to help with self checkout are always quick to help and so far Ive had hassle free returns, but the lady who advertises the childrens activities is way too pushy and gets irritating quickly. And the solar people who hassle you every time you walk in there treat you like a second class citizen when they find out you live in a mobile home. Its like theyre irritated with you for wasting their time after they hassled you. With this store I feel like there is a good side for every bad and enough of both to warrant my continued patronage with limited expectations.

Pros: If youre a outdoor laborer and know exactly what you want, this is the place to go because you wont be hassled by employees. The staff at the Returns Desk seems to be good at keeping their cool and not yelling back while not letting themselves be verbally beaten up. Cons: If youre not sure EXACTLY what you want dont go here, go to Orchard Supplies by the 41st Playhouse. This business, or at least this branch, has the WORST inexcusable customer service Ive ever seen and I worked customer service jobs for 8+ years in floor and manager levels. Ive received more help from other customers, usually professional handymen, than from the employees. The staff is never around and if/when you finally track an employee down theyre usually in groups of 3+ killing time, plus the shift managers dont even know what products they have or the difference between products. I highly advice going to Orchard Supplies first if youre trying to do do-it-yourself stuff. The staff there will at least be able to tell you what you need even if they dont carry it and sometimes they can tell you about other options for items to use that you werent aware of.

I went into the Capitola Home Depot today, with my Son in Law and my grandson. We waited for over an hour in the appliance dept. to purchase a microwave oven. There was one lady and she said she would help us right after she helped the couple before us. Fine, no problem, except that after waiting for an hour, she still wasnt finished with them and never called anyone else to help out. The was also another couple after us waiting for service. We finally left and drove over to Sears. Walked in, found the same model, ($100 cheaper) and had it rung up and outta there in under 10 minutes. I had the same experience last year when I bought my stove and refrigerator from Home Depot. I had to make 4 trips back and forth to finally get them all together. We are finished with Home Depot. It makes no sense to have people wandering around and telling me they cant help me because its not their department. I worked at a hardware store when I was 18. I didnt know much, but I sure never gave up until I found someone that could help the customer. Thanks for nothing.
