After dabbling in hiking and backpacking for many years, I decided to dive in and buy my own pack. Was not really sure how to go about this and B-Man at the South Side location provided the best service I have ever experienced in retail. B-Man is a super knowledgable and experienced backpacker and gave me all the information I needed to pick out the best pack for me. He was gracefully juggling several customers at once and giving real world advice about the products. Thanks B-Man! Also received some helpful guidance from other employees up in the shoe dept. and throughout the store. I know that outdoor gear can be expensive, but often it is going to last you for the long haul. REI is the best place to get advice from people that actually go outside and use the stuff they are trying to sell!

Very inexperience people that can be down right rude. Some dont know anything about the products they are selling and always need to call in someone else who might or might know how to answer questions. Used to be a lot different over the years and have spent tbousands at REI. E Much more pleasant to purchase on line and I have spent way too much on their overpriced gear over the past years. Once an avid backpacker but at 72 and 5 bypasses slowed me down. Still love to camp but I can live without the hassel of dumb --its! A member too and a wasted 20 bucks. Doubt that I will go back to their brick and mortar stores.

I cannot say much about their selection of wares because I was only in the store once. However, during my short excursion, I was quite rudely accosted by an employee because I expressed my dislike in the color of a pair of shoes. They then took it upon themselves to point out the "ugly" colored shoes that I was wearing as well as their disbelief in my dislike of the pair that was on sale. Needless to say this certain employee has soured my taste of the store for a while.

Now I know why I dont go down there. Its soooo expensive. Seriously, $120 for a travel pillow? I might as well just take the pillow off of my bed. And $300 for a mini 1 person tent? Dude, you can find MUCH MUCH better deals off the internet. No way Im paying $300 for a little tent. If I was gonna pay $300 for a tent, its probably gonna sleep around 8 people and have numerous amounts pockets and storage. Youre better off going to Dicks

I had poor customer service from the manager Eli. I had to call customer service to get purchase history information because the manager did not want to take the time to call himself. I have been a REI member since 2000 and have been to several stores in different states and I have only had two poor experiences with REI and they both have been with managers at the Pittsburgh South Side store.

i used to describe REI as my new favorite place but now its just pretty much my favorite place. The $20 lifetime membership few is totally worth it, since you get 10% back on all purchases. I try to make it out for the garage sales, when merchandise is up for grabs for 50-90 percent off. And dont forget the climbing wall, free for members, on weekend afternoons and evenings.

Lots of great sale tables, the staff was helpful at first, but after my husband and I had been browsing for a while they started to get kind of pushy, like every clerk in the store came up to us within 30 seconds asking if we needed help. It was a little much, so we left and figure well spend the rest of the $300 gift card online where we can browse at our own pace

The selection is pretty good at the Pittsburgh Southside Works location. They have outdoor gear for every recreational activity. Do not get your Mt or Road Bike worked on here. It is super expensive. REI is the kind of store that you use to try stuff on just to make sure it fits then write down the info and go home and buy online.

My husband and daughter were treated badly by a manager at Southside Pittsburgh location. Instead of explaining store policies and making a big sale she was rude and inconsiderate to customers and a child excited to get a new bike. Not only did she lose one sale she lost many more and customers too. Will spread the word.

If you need outdoor gear of any kind, this is the place to come! We buy all our biking and hiking clothing here, their boot and shoe selection is great, and the staff is fantastic, knowledgeable and helpful. I have been an REI member for 40 years, and was delighted when they came to Pittsburgh!

Very poor selection of kayaks, considering the proximity of the store to the river I would have expected more. LL Bean at Ross Park Mall has a much larger selection. When I asked for assistance with a kayak, everyone just looked at each other. Save your money and go to a professional store.

their friendly service makes you forget how much money you just spent on a small piece of aluminum with a spring in it. Even helps you forget the price you just paid on a T shirt with a companys logo you are helping to sponsor. But seriously, its the only option (and a good one) around.

I really really like REI, except for its pricing. Even if you are a member it doesnt decrease by much what youve paid there. Anything you find there you can find for allot less money elsewhere. But they do have allot of great stuff. Have to stop by everytime Im in the area.

Helpful staff, fantastic selection and variety, climbing wall, and plenty of services for everyone with an interest in the outdoors. This store is a must-see and visit for casual to advanced outdoors enthusiasts. Memberships are cheap and offer huge benefits as well.

The best way to summarize it is easy. I have been a fan of REI for years and I am in the process of building my first Bolt bag. Theyve got all the stuff Ive been looking for along with some great advice. Theyve earned my business and my loyalty.

The products are awesome, like any REI store. The return policy with the $20 lifetime membership is unbeatable. If you can, go the store at settlers ridge, it is better, the parking is better and the employees are more helpful and knowledgable.

Steep prices, but salespeople are helpful, and apparently if you join their club you get better prices (via paid dividend). I dont shop here often and so was not interested. They offered a few times, but they respected my disinterest too.

So many great camping products. Hit up REI for some last minute camping gear. Very helpful staff. Subie (yes thats her awesome name) was a great help and helped me prep my daughter for our trip. Cant wait to stop back!

The areas BIG REI store. So much stuff I need! Sales people were very friendly, knowledgable and efficient. A good visit to a very nice store. The Settlers Ridge store is also a great place to get gear opinions & shop.

These people know their stuff. Every time I go in they get me exactly what I need. I would worry about how much I spend but then I get that dividend check and its back to get some more camping gear.
