Ok, I had to write a review after reading all of the horrible whining comments. First off, this is a discount fabric store, Do Not expect over the moon service. I visited the store on a Friday and Saturday nights and there was only 2 employees working. That means...they dont have time to hold everybody by the hand! The owner is a very old school type lady, that means NO BS...she will just blurt out what she thinks. Just take it with a grain of salt and be polite. In all honesty, if you want someone to walk you through the store and take time to show you everything, go to a big box store and spend the extra $$. Please note, the store has a policy when you are purchasing fabric that is close to the end of the bolt you either buy it all or leave at least 1 and 3/4 yard...or something like that. Just ask if you are not sure. As for the racist comments... The owner is blunt...thats that, plain and simple. I saw her helping latin girls, black girls, asian girls and white girls AND there was no preference for anyone! I was in the store for over 3 hours (I live far away and shop for fabric all in one shot). All in all, there are some great finds here. My best find was a gorgeous silk velvet fabric for $9.99 a yard! Ok, Ok... $10 is not cheap, however, that same fabric cost $50 bucks a yard in New York! My advice, go and check out for yourself. Be polite, be prepared to search for the fabric yourself and have fun. Oh and if you spend over $300 they will give you 10% off your purchase. That may not sound like a lot, but any discount is better than none :)

NO stars if that is possible. I cant believe these people are still in business the way the treat/speak to people. I was simply looking for a certain type of button. I could not find shank buttons anywhere in the city of Boston so I looked on line. This place looked easy to get to. I called them, spoke to "Carla" (who apparently does not exist). I explained what a shank button was because she didnt know. I was told they have just a few. I took the train to Lechmere. I walked from the train to the store. once inside I could not find anything near what I described over the phone and was ASSURED they had. I asked the associate behind the counter to speak to "Carla". I was told there IS no Carla..??? I told her what I was looking for and she said they dont have that. When I explained I just hung off the phone with someone named "Carla" who said they did have them she became aggressive and RUDE. ???? WTF?? at that point an old lady croaked in and started in on me.. HOLY S_IT!! Im just looking for buttons!!! I was just TOLD you have them. She was cranking to me that they dont sell buttons because the "dont sell"...(???) There is a SECTION of buttons in the store... (no shanks which I am looking for)... WOW!!! Unprofessional and angry people... You cant even tell who works there due to the way they dress and lack of name tags/store tags... After reading some of these other reviews I can see many more similar complaints. Winmil Fabrics in Boston is closing, I will certainly be steering my people away from THESE idiots..

The Framingham location is my FAVORITE fabric store because it is bigger, but Somerville is great, too. If I am in the area I always go here. The prices are absolutely amazing- less than half the SALE prices at Joanns. One third the price of Fabric Place. They have the largest selection of silks I have ever seen outside of NYC- all less than $10/yd. The bad reviews are all from people who expected to have a personal shopper carry their bolts and calculate the yardage for their project. I really do not know of ANY fabric store that does that. If you want to talk customer service, just ask the owners whether they have more bolts of a certain fabric and they will go to their warehouse and look and email you. I cant believe the comments about racist behavior because their stores court and cater to African customers. I once saw a woman clean out the densely embroidered cut lace fabric to bring BACK to Africa because it was so cheap at Sewfisticated. They have authentic African wax batiks for $4/yd. The owner told me that he stocks different fabrics at the each store depending on the African nationalities in the area. My latest steal there? A Marc Jacobs sateen cotton print for $4/yd. They carry stuff that you never see at any other store- tons of fake fur, leather hides, rolls of leatherette for purses, real wool suiting. They give you a 10% discount if you buy over $200 ( yes I have seen this several times) Better yet, sign up for their email list and you will get a 20% off on a $50+ purchase a couple times a year.

I normally go to the Dorchester location but I have been to this location quite a few times. Fortunately, I have never run into the owner everyone is complaining about. I would say this location is great. Because each location stocks some different items you can always find something unique. In every review people keep saying "its discount" as some sort of qualifier. The store is organized and neat as most fabric stores are. The staff have a working knowledge of fabrics and uses. They have a large range of fabric types, colors, and designs. Its not a boutique with hard wood floors and a glass of champagne waiting for you at the door but, I mean what fabric store is? Even Joanns is just a big square room with white walls and floors (depending on the age of the store. West Roxbury store I looking at you and your beige, formally, white everything). So it would be very nice if everyone stopped saying "its discount" as though that means the fabric they sell isnt of good quality. Also, Ive seen several people complain about not being able to buy less than a yard or leave less than 2 yards on the bolt. This is standard at most fabric stores because 2 yards is the cut off for the yardage on most projects/patterns. So if theres less than 2 yards conceivably no one will buy it so they have to discount it as a remnant, which they dont want to do.

Absolutely dreadful customer service. I tried to buy 2 yards of fabric [I needed much less] but the cashier said that since only one yard and 3/4 would be left in the roll, I would have to buy the whole piece or the one and three quarters I decided to buy 1 3/4. She then said that since my purchase was a couple of dollars under their seven dollar minimum for debit cards I couldnt check out, so I said I would look around for things that would put me over the seven dollar mark. It was 4 dollars per yard. When I came back to the cashier there was another long line (even longer than the one Id been in the first time) so I asked if I could check out without waiting in line a second time. She rolled her eyes and said I should get in line. After a few minutes I was frustrated about all the waiting and decided to just leave the store without my fabric. When I went to leave she asked me why I wasnt buying the fabric. I told her that I didnt want to wait in line again, she then made an exasperated face at the other cashier and threw up her hands because she had already cut the fabric. The second cashier said she would be happy to cash me out and the first said that she hadnt told me otherwise. I checked out but wont be back!
