After a visit to Fords Theatre, I stopped by for brunch with my family. The host was very polite and quickly prepped a table. The waitress (Mariana M) took our drink order. I was only able to say "water" as she sort of rolled her eyes and hurried off. I wasnt able to complete the drink order until 7-8 minutes later when she came back. I then told her that my wife and I both wanted coffee (one dark, the other medium roast). We went ahead and placed our food order since we had plenty of time to look over the menu in the time between her first and second visit to our table. I had to repeat the order three times as she didnt understand that I wanted to split one of the orders for my two children (5 & 7 years old). We received the coffee orders and we didnt know that we had to press our own coffee (first time visitors). We tried to pour the coffee (which hadnt been pressed yet) and Mariana corrected my wife. OK, no big deal, but as Mariana pressed my wifes coffee, Mariana muttered "awkward" under her breath. Really? We received the first course, chocolate fritters. My kids and my wife enjoyed the fritters, but I didnt touch it as I didnt want to spoil the taste of my upcoming main course, lox on flat bread. Mariana questioned why I didnt touch the fritter and after I explained, she condescendingly snickered and proceeded to gather the dirty plates. We received our main courses and it went without a hitch or any further comments or negative actions. I tasted the fritter after I finished my lox, but it was too rich for my taste. I stacked our dirty plates and placed the (mostly uneaten) fritter plate on top. Mariana came to pick up the dirty plates and questioned why I didnt like the fritter. I explained that it was too rich and Mariana stated that my 5 year old daughter would like it and seemed to hint that she was going to give the fritter to my daughter without my consent (per her body language). I immediately stopped Mariana and told her that she way out of line and that she needed to take the fritter away. Before the third course came, I instructed Mariana to make it "to go" and to provide the check. I had enough. Mariana came back with the third course in (3) separate containers, but without a bag to carry all three containers. Mariana stated that the restaurant was "out of bags". I questioned this several times and my wife brought me an umbrella bag to fashion a sling around the to go containers. I had Mariana bring me two more umbrella bags in order for me to engineer my own carrying mechanism, but then the host walked over and provided a bag (restaurant branded). Petty, Mariana, petty... Oh, by the way, we were wearing very casual clothes (shorts, t-shirts, etc...). I guess Mariana didnt think that my family was classy enough for the joint.

Waltzed in here for dessert after a disappointing dinner..and thank goodness! Co Co. Sala couldnt have been more of a change from the ambience wed just come from..youll have to read my other review to know what Im talking about. This place is all about the mood lighting--in fact, Id stay they kept it too dark i.e. we couldnt get any good pictures of the pretty food! :( Nevertheless, all the waitresses wear bright red dresses, which is a nice touch with the sultry, moody feel of the lounge. Ours was totally cool about us not ordering drinks (which I always appreciate), and gave us great, not-overly-verbose recommendations/explanations about the menu. We got their famous Chocolate Onyx (later wishing wed [also] gotten the sticky toffee pudding because T decided belatedly she was in the mood for caramel)...and the "Co. Co Flight"--a trio of hot chocolates (you get the option of adding alcohol for only an extra dollar, i think?). The chocolate onyx is a trio of desserts itself: one salted caramel/almond truffle--one scoop of super rich dark chocolate mousse or gelato (consistency was something in between...)--one crazily constructed cake. Let me break this cake down for you: bottom layer is a homemade brownie, topped with a layer of creme brulee, topped with a layer of chocolate crispy balls, topped with salted caramel--all wrapped in a layer of chocolate mousse and coated in some kind of chocolate covering. For the chocolate lovers, dont miss this. :) I actually really enjoyed the Co. Co Flight. You get to choose 3 of their 6-7 hot chocolate selection. We got the dark chocolate, chipotle chocolate, and salted caramel. I love spiced mochas, so chipotle was probably my favorite, but the salted caramel one was unique too. Dark chocolate was rich, as expected. They come in shot glasses, not too much, not too little. Despite the two women next to us were blabbing (too) loudly about their sexcapades, we had a good time :)

I wanted to come here with a few girlfriends for my birthday, but in the end, I came here with one of the girls for a Christmas gift exchange. We booked Sunday brunch reservations. The place is very cozy and lounge-like, with plenty of cushy seats and swanky décor. In addition to a dark chocolate with peanut butter co co (aka hot chocolate), I ordered the three-course brunch experience. The first course is a chocolate fritter amuse bouche. I chose the French toast smores as my main dish. This decadent dish is a cinnamon brioche stuffed with house-made marshmallow, dark chocolate, and graham shortbread, and comes with a side of warm banana compote and milk chocolate mousse. For my dessert, I chose the Onyx, which is dark chocolate mousse, vanilla crème brûlée, salted caramel, and a brownie rolled into one chocolately concoction. They also had a little bon bon on the side. So I obviously ODed a little on chocolate that afternoon. Everything was very rich and filled with chocolate. Looking back, I probably should have chosen a lighter main course, but I was in the holiday spirit and wanted all chocolate. I enjoyed sipping my hot chocolate which came with a housemade marshmallow. Everything was pretty good. Im glad they put a side of warm banana compote with the French toast smores because it balanced out the chocolate. I couldnt even finish the Onyx but the single taste I had of it was velvety and a little smoother than I was expecting. I could have probably done without the chocolate fritter, but it came with the brunch experience. The three-course brunch cost $26, which I thought was worth it since if I ordered the same things a la carte, it would have cost more. I could probably come back just for a co co drink. Great spot for dates and get togethers with girlfriends. If youre a dessert/chocolate lover, youll probably enjoy Co Co Sala.

Calling all Chocolate Lovers...... Today was date day for hubby and I and it was my pick. I love breakfast food and sweets so Coco Sala was a great choice. Now, hubby isnt big on sweets or breakfast but was able to find something savory and filling with just a hint of chocolate on the side. Not wanting to be to bad and over do it in the sweets department I decided on the grown up grill cheese and tomatoe soup for my entree to break up the chocolate amuse from the first course and the peanut butter chocolate cheese cake from the third course. If you get the grilled cheese and soup be ready for a strong kick from the soup that will knock your cold out. I will say the dessert by far was the best part of my meal. Dont get me wrong everything was good but the cheesecake was memorable. The atmosphere was intimate and low key with the love to brunch in DC feel. Our server Alex added to the great experience. He was very personable, attentive and we shared some laughs. When I go back to try the dinner it will also be to see Alex. My only thing to change would be the area we sat in. The couch and low table area would be perfect for short people, happy hour or just drinks. With a guy that it is 64 and being tall myself it was a little uncomfortable but we made it work. Coco Sala is great for a date, girls night out and of course Sunday brunch. Dont feel bad about enjoying all of those sweet calories because afterwards you can enjoy a short walk to Gallery Place to walk off some of those calories and keep the fun going with a visit to a great museum, a movie, or even some bowling. Today we opted for a movie. Life is s great with something good to eat, but even better with a sweet chocolate treat.
