Just got accused of shoplifting a piece of crap keychain from this joke of an establishment. Before I share my full story, keep this in mind. After about 10 minutes of research, I found 10+ reviews from other people who have also been accused of shoplifting. This seriously troubling trend tells me that McGuckin management doesnt give a rats ass about treating their customers with respect. Heres my story: Two employees followed me out of the store and demanded that I come back inside. As a couple middle-aged managers stared me down with their smug, judgmental mugs, the henchmen informed me that they saw me slip the keychain into my right pants pocket. I said, "You sure about that?" as I emptied everything from my pants and hoodie pockets. Phone, wallet, car keys, and OMG...magically, no junky keychain! I get it. Well, sort of. They probably have to deal with these problems fairly often. But you better be damn sure of yourself before you wrongfully accuse someone of a crime in the middle of your store during busy shopping hours. And if youre going to make that gamble, be prepared to face the consequences of being wrong. Plus, I can think of about 18 better, more tactful ways to go about this type of confrontation. The silver lining here is that they are the ones who look like fools after I proved my innocence and walked out. Im all for supporting small, local businesses, but I will be going to The Home Depot now.

Every time I go here I am beyond impressed with the staffs level of knowledge and dedication to their customers! Having grown up in the Boulder area and now living in Denver, I forget how much I LOVE this place! It is well worth the drive for the level of service! I was walking around clearly looking lost, after not being in the store for several years. A gentleman noticed my look of confusion and wandering aimlessly. I told him I was looking for the pet supplies. Rather than pointing me in a direction and having me figure it out like so many of the other Big Box stores who shall remain nameless, this guy walked me all the way there, then went and grabbed Charley Howe. I cannot even describe in words how helpful Charley was during my shopping experience. I was told to get a "Gentle Leader" by some friends of mine, to keep my monster of a dog from pulling. After Charlie asked me several questions to determine my needs, she recommended a harness that she uses for her 4 big dogs and swears by. I am beyond impressed with her recommendation and could not be happier about my experience at the local hardware store! I recommend everyone leave the Blue and Orange big box stores and take a visit to the Green!

I probably spend over $1,000 a month in that store for my business. Not anymore. Yesterday I bought a $250 wire shelving unit from McGuckins. After walking out of the store with my purchase, I was approached by security who asked me about a drink that I forgot to pay for. For one, the drink was clearly in my cart and the cashier should have noticed it. Its not my JOB to make sure everything in the cart is rang up. Secondly, I even had to correct the cashier that I had FOUR shelves when he tried to ring me up for THREE. This horse-faced security guard should be fired for making a HUGE deal out of nothing. She said I was lucky she didnt call the cops. Wow, thanks lady (actually, mightve been a man - couldnt tell). Shes lucky I didnt call animal control on her - she looked rabid. And they should train their cashiers to actually pay attention to what is in the customers cart and train their security "dogs" to do a little research before accosting a loyal customer. Oh, and heres the kicker! Did you know that their employees dont even get a discount!?!?! I couldnt believe it when the cashier told me that! NEVER AGAIN.

Decent, but not nearly the store it once was. McGuckin Hardware used to be the place where one found anything. Now, its stock is much more limited and, surprisingly, common items are often out of stock. The famous floor help is not nearly as good, either (although bolts and nuts remains terrific). This year I went there looking for a rubber stopper of a particular size -- it was out. Home Depot had the part in stock. This summer I needed a type of self-closing hinge and, after finding something close, asked a floor help person if a particular variation was available -- I was told, "No." While looking for another item along the same wall, about 15 feet from the hinge I first found, was a hinge that had the variation I needed that I had been told did not exist. On Saturday of a three day weekend the store was out of 3/4" copper sweat solder tees -- I got what I needed at Home Depot. I have numerous other examples. Years ago, McGuckins ruled and was spectacular. Now it is very good, but I find myself going to Home Depot first because I tired of not finding what I needed at McGuckins and then going to HD.

Horrible customer service. I wanted to like it because theyre the local "mom and pop" hardware store, but after several trips there, I have experienced workers who are uninformed and lack ownership in helping customers. I get the sense that Im bothering them with their intra work social life. I asked about a product I bought only a week before and they said they never sold it. I tried to return a deadbolt because it wasnt working properly and they accused me of "lying" and tried to paint me like I was the one that damaged it. I was appalled. Their return policy is so absurd and a complete hassle. When returning the item, I told them I had already bought a replacement after he said he would exchange the item or give me 50% OF WHAT I PAID(?!?!). He then asked me if I went to Home Depot to purchase the replacement. How that pertains to me trying to return something, I dont know? A little defensive if you ask me. I will never go back to McGuckins. Rude and disinterested in their customers. Uninformed about their products. And lack of ownership in what they do. Shameful for a local Boulder business.

Id like to back up the negative reviews of McGuckins due to its truly evil security personnel. There are three other reviews referring to the security here on google and many other reviews about them on other sites (including one where the security guard bowed to an asian customer as an insulting gesture after falsely accusing him of stealing). I had a very small, very cheap item (worth at most four dollars) the cashier didnt ring up and they approached me outside. I asked them what was going on and they insisted I go back inside. They blamed me for the oversight and treated me like a criminal. When they realized I wasnt going to take it laying down and maybe sue them, they let me go. Another review here talks about how they had to pay court fines for (very similar to my case) a very small cheap item that, again, was their fault for not ringing up. I called the security manager afterward and he made no apologies. After reading these reviews, I realized I should have sued them to help stop this treatment of innocent people. If you do have the same experience, PLEASE, BY ALL MEANS, SUE!
