Family Dollar Wilmington, CA This new store is located in Wilmington at the intersection of a busy city street and Pacific Coast Highway. It opened several months ago. The store is in a small strip mall with a number of other retail establishments that range from a barber shop to a pawn shop and several very busy small restaurants. Family Dollar is a convenience store with a compliment of merchandise that is similar to what you find in a 99Cents store – only better organized and more orderly. They carry food items you expect to find in a convenience store, a very expensive collection of soft drinks, many sweets, a rather limited number of food items and a very extensive range of (predominantly) clothing for women. Cleaning stuff and other goods one finds in a small household. The prices at Family Dollar are higher than at a 99Cents store or similar major discount store but lower than at other convenience retailers. Bread is sinfully expensive and hardly ever in stock. Many other food items are around 25 cents higher than those of nearby major competitors. The store is conveniently located, the merchandise offered has helped me out many times when I was to busy or unwilling to drive to one of the other discounters in town. So far, so good. But customer service and availability of merchandise is a far cry from good. Since opening the store this Family Dollar has seen a seemingly endless number of store clerks pass through. Many of them poorly motivated and/or trained. At times I had to chase after a store clerk to pay for my purchase. More often than not I can find a clerk lurking somewhere among the shelves – stocking merchandise or, maybe, just hiding? Worse yet, Family Dollar either does not care or does not have an efficient way of keeping food items stocked at all times. More often than not there is no bread. It takes ages for a new delivery to arrive. Yet tortillas are getting old and stale because they are way too expensive. So are cold cuts, franks and other simple foods many people buy in a pinch. Family Dollar has not restocked them for weeks after the refrigerated display case broke. It is still empty. But maybe Family Dollar does not have to try harder because of its clientele. This Family Dollar gets a lot of foot traffic from a nearby treatment center and some low-cost housing. I have to revise my rating of four stars that I gave to the store a few months ago in another review. Today I can give the Wilmington Family Dollar only a three, at best.
