This is an expensive butcher shop. For example, hamburger meat is $10/lb. That said, if you make meat a treat for yourself (i.e. you dont eat meat all the time but when you do, you want it to be a excellent), this is the place. For example, my roommates did a taste test between a steak from this place and the same cut from a butcher shop on Divisadero (might not be around anymore). The steak from Fatted Calf was vastly better, however, the steak from the cheaper place was okay (not bad). Therefore, if you eat meat regularly and you dont consider yourself to have a refined palette (or if youre on a budget), I dont recommend this place. I gave it "excellent" ratings because despite the price, everything they have is excellent. Besides meat, they carry some bread, pasta, crackers, dairy, and preserves; all from local producers. Also, their meatloaf sandwich is incredible. Seriously, if they have one where youre there, buy it; you wont regret it.

Let me start by saying that this place is more expensive than most butcher shops. Now that that is out of the way I can say that their quality is excellent and their staff is incredibly helpful. As an example, I bought a one pound sealed bag of pork stew meat to barbecue on skewers. I asked one of their staff how to marinade it and he mentioned that a harissa marinade would work great. He then offered to open up the bag, mix in harissa marinade and reseal the bag for me. The resulting product was delicious and that type of service is characteristic of what I experience at the Fatted Calf. The reason I usually go to there, though, is for their amazing sandwiches and salads, which are very reasonably priced. I recommend the roast pork sandwiches but the porchetta is also excellent. Try to get it on focaccia bread if you can. You really cant miss here!

If its high-end meat youre after, this is your place. Fatted Calf has some amazing cuts of meat, and their cured selection is mouthwatering. They also have a pretty fantastic pulled pork sandwich made with their house slaw and Blue Bottle-infused BBQ sauce (thats awesome, guys, keep it in the neighborhood). If its not already sold out, you will purchase said pulled pork sandwich and consume it immediately. No, really, walk to Patricias Green and eat it right away, because it will start getting soggy immediately. Final note: as a fan of all things pickled, I do appreciate their selection of pickled sides, though they err on the strong-vinegar-taste side. If thats your thing, go nuts.

I have died and seen Meat Heaven and this place is IT!!!! I had visited their Napa store on a trip up there and wanted to get some of the goodies without so long a drive. The SF store seemed to have WAY more in the way of offerings and ooohhhhh what they offered! I picked up some heritage pork chops and pork should roast done porchetta style. Soooo many other meaty treats to tempt and tease!!! All they have there is deliciousness! Parking is not great in that part of the city so you may have to circle the block once or so. Or you might just luck out and score a spot in front of the store. Its worth the effort either way. I say GO and GO NOW!!! #ReviewLocal

This is a nice option for lunch in Hayes Valley if you like meat. I had the prosciutto sandwich (about $10) was good and hearty. I also had some kind of lamb meatball soup (about $6) which was tasty. The happy hour on Wednesdays is nice, as they lay out a charcuterie and serve wine. You can watch them hack a hog in half (or lamb) and theyre willing to answer any questions you might have about the meat. They dont offer the San Danielle prosciutto, which I like the best, but the one they sell is pretty decent. Unfortunately there is no seating except for a couple of benches outside.

A sinful place where its way too easy to spend all your money on animal parts. My friend and I picked up a sourdough baguette and two types of pate/terrine. The guy at the counter sold us by describing one of them as "porky butter"--I mean how could you say no to that? The prices are steep, but this is the kind of shop Id love to splurge in, both on the meats/cheeses and the dried artisinal products lining the stores shelves.

The food is out of this world. Sandwiches are hearty and made with premium ingredients, from the bread to the meat to the condiments. Their soup is even more delicious, made with high quality meat cuts and fresh, organic veggies. A MUST-TRY for anyone wandering Hayes Valley or visiting the city. I have never ordered from the butcher here, but Ive eaten a number of sandwiches, soups, and misc other delicious items they sell.

Mortadella has good flavor, not quite as tender as at boccalone but very good spices. They carry amazing beef; a rib-eye from here might be the best steak Ive made myself in a long time, and theyre cut to order so you get exactly the thickness youre looking for. They also carry some great non-meat products, like the fresh ricotta in the fridge case or the really awesome meyer-lemon/rosemary rustic bread.

My favorite butchery in San Francisco. They have high quality meats, including grass-fed beef and amazing cured meats. The best, though, is their Wednesday Meat Happy Hour from 5:30 to 8pm, where they butcher a whole hog while serving some free snaks and wine.

We stopped in to pick up some things for a picnic and were quite happy that we stumbled on this place. The prices seemed reasonable and the interior was well decorated and organized. It was slightly difficult to pick what we wanted without samples, though.

I walked by with a friend, we saw the sign, and being fans of meals that previously walked, decide to give it a try. I was not disappointed. I had the pulled pork sandwich and it was extremely tender and full of flavor. I would highly recommend.

Do you need meat? Do you need amazing meat? This is the place to go. These guys have an amazing selection, but note that some of it isnt available every day. Not cheap, but nothing quality is in this city.

A treat for those on the hunt for tasty animal parts. A little pretentious but great sandwiches. Not really anywhere to sit and they wont let you drink the beer they sell (by the can) inside the store.

Didnt try the sandwiches, but their selection of specialty meats, cheeses, seasonings, and dried mushrooms was impressive and the clerk was friendly and full of cooking tips! The lamb bacon is amazing!

High quality butcher shop -- great to try a variety of fresh meats and cheeses. Also a good spot for sandwiches and salads, that can be eaten nearby in the park!

Everything here is good, really and truly. Their homeade stocks are the best, and their duck liver mousse is one of the better things Ive ever eaten!
