7/13/10 Consumers should be aware that the Dollar Deal store at 1279 Veterans Boulevard in Redwood City employs dishonest business practices. I purchased a three piece rasp set but after getting home I realized that one had a broken handle. I took the set back & asked to exchange it for one that wasnt broken. Even though I hadnt opened the package, had the receipt & store bag & returned it within one day I was told there would be no exchange made. I said they couldnt do that since the item they sold was broken & that they needed to stand behind their merchandise. The manager, who was exceedingly rude, thought I was going to take it upon myself to make the change & proceeded to call the police. With his cell phone he took my picture & threatened to take a picture of my license plate if I tried to leave before the police got there. After the officer arrived we checked the rest of the rasp sets that were still for sale, and found they were all broken. When the manager was asked if he intended to sell the rest of the broken sets he said that “due to the amount of merchandise that the store carried he couldn’t possibly account for each & every item.” The police officer told me there wasn’t anything he could do since the store had the right to set their return policy but, in front of the manager, he strongly suggested that I inform the public through an internet blog & report them to the Better Business Bureau, which I’ve done. He also said that if I wished I could take the store to small claims court, picket in front of the store and, of course, choose to not shop there. This store is utterly dishonest, if you want to charge a purchase but the total sale is a small amount they lie & say in order to charge the merchandise total has to be at least $10. When I told them they could not legally refuse to accept my credit card & they didn’t have the right to try to bully me into buying more than I wanted the clerk said “do you know how much it costs us to process a charge, why should I loose money?” When you’re ready to check out they tell you the total owed verbally & will not give you a receipt unless you insist on one. When you do so, you find they’ve quoted an amount that is over charging you for the tax. When this is brought to their attention they say it was just a mistake. Charging more for tax & pocketing the difference is outright stealing from the government & the store customers. This store should have criminal charges brought against them & they should not be allowed to stay in business! I agree with the police officer and strongly recommend that anyone who shops at this store is extremely cautious before making any type of purchase. You should insist that anything you buy that has batteries or movable parts, such as toy’s or clocks, be tested by the store clerk before the purchase is finalized. It may only be a $1 store but the dollars can add up & the people who shop there have worked hard for their money. They’re looking for bargains; they are not looking to get robbed. There have been many similar complaints made against this particular store so, as the saying goes, “buyers beware!”

Stay away. Check out the reviews on Yelp. I bought a plastic canary yellow desk clock for $1.00. Well, it didnt work. When I took it back to the store to let the owner know the clocks were defective, and ask to exchange it for something else, he refused. "READ THE SIGN," he said. "We dont do any returns or exchanges." "But it doesnt work," I said. "Its only a dollar." "But its the principle -- why should I pay a dollar for something broken?" "Its only a dollar. Look, I buy this stuff in bulk from the distributor. I dont test it. He wont take it back. You want me to lose money on it? I cant do that." Which meant, it was okay for me, the customer, to lose the money. After all, its only a dollar. Of course I told him Id never come back, and of course he didnt care. With an attitude like that, he has to be selling alot of broken stuff that he "cant afford to take back" from the ripped off customer.

DONT BUY AT THIS STORE GO TO DOLLAR STORE AROUND THE CORNER. I brought 3 items a few days ago with posted sign on the wall for $1 each but the manager/cashier added an extra 5-10 cents to each item and it wasnt for sale tax also not giving a receipt for any chance of returning or proof of purchase. It seems this place does shady business practices. 5/10 cents is not a lot of money but its the principles of getting ripped off and bad service.

I entered the store with a positive attitude and i asked the guy a simple question and all of a sudden he took out his air horn and started making really loud noises at me and asked me in a rude manner if was going to buy or nah. If i could rate this store with 0 i would but unfortunately i cant so ill put one star.

Pretty much everything is a dollar! Part party store, part general merchandise store, Dollar Deals sells a little bit of everything, including piñatas hanging from the ceiling. They even sell Mexican made sodas - such as 7-up, which isnt as sugary sweet or as highly carbonated as American made 7-up.

I used to like this place because you can buy cheap stuff, but last time I was there they charged me extra money. More than $5 of "miscalculation" in taxes. Be careful.

Find a lot stuff at low price. Return policy does not exist. They will allow you to exchange.
