Finally, a much needed third-wave/specialty coffee shop in Tuscaloosa! I ordered a pour-over, which came out to $4.09 after tax. Monarch looks to exclusively brew coffee from Lyons Coffee Roasters located in Florence, AL. They brewed me what I believe was the Ethiopian Hambela, which is a natural processed coffee that is grown at higher altitudes, which should be somewhat fruit-forward. Monarchs brewing process is right on the money. They brew in a chemex, and take care to use Fellow Stagg kettles for their water. My coffee was fruit forward, leaning more towards blueberry and currant. Overall, I think the only thing that could be improved is the roast itself. For what I would expect, the coffee couldve been more tart and juicy. Ill be back here often!

I love this place. Probably one of the best atmospheres that Ive come across with coffee shops....they were super busy but still managed to maintain a space where I could hold a conversation and do some focused studying. The avocado toast and lemon blueberry scones are to die for!!! Paul and Audrey (owners) know their coffee - I havent had a drink to disappoint. Would definitely recommend the Cuban or the dirty chai latte if youre looking for something crafty.

I cant believe I just discovered this place. In a town full of big-chain mediocrity and local places serving lackluster brews, this place is such a breath of fresh air. The atmosphere, the staff, the seating, and most importantly, the coffee, is nothing short of stellar. Theres nothing else like Monarch in Tuscaloosa or anywhere between here and Birmingham.

I come here at least 4 times a week. The staff is great, and the atmosphere is perfect to visit with friends or hunker down on some work. The coffee and baked goods are second to none. Im always happy with a latte or their drip. I had the blueberry lemon scone the other day. Life changing.
