Nearly everything in the store is ridiculously overpriced. Normal people find this to be a turn off (in a rare turn of events, Im categorizing myself as normal here). However, it became clear before I even walked in the door that this store was not for the plebs. It serves and services those that epitomize the hybridization of man and feminine hygiene product, one of which I encountered at the entrance. As I opened the door and stepped in, I glanced back to see if anyone was following. I made it a habit to always hold doors for people simply as a meager show of respect for my fellow humans. No one was close, but I did see a couple heading towards the door who had their hands occupied with their infant. Without hesitation, I immediately turned around and walked back out in order to wait for them and their child. Mixing children with door handles can have catastrophic results. Just ask the survivors of the attack on the USS Liberty. Anyway, while holding the door I made a friendly comment about the obligation I felt to hold the door for parents who were tending to their young one. They nodded and continued inside. I glanced behind me again to make sure my door duties were complete and when I turned back I was surprised to find the door inches from my face as it swung shut. How could this possibly have happened, you ask? Well Becca and Corky from Life Goes On hadnt bothered to even nudge the door back an inch for my sake. Well they must have been distracted by the baby, right? Wrong! THERE WAS NO BABY! Upon closer inspection, what I thought was an adorable human infant turned out to be a small sack of potatoes with a smiley face drawn on it. Clearly these two were professionals. This was not a spur of the moment con, no sir. I had been taken for a ride down the rabbit hole by two lifelong con artists and I never saw it coming. Sure Ive been blind since birth, but thats no excuse. The consequences still haunt me at night. At least I think its night when they haunt me. I cant stop wondering how many doors had I held open in my life? And for who? Good God...for who? Who was I responsible for letting in? Wilford Brimley was right. Ill never be clean again. Never. The store itself is nice though. And they have free WiFi. Two stars.

REI used to be my go-to place for everything outdoors...but not anymore. Bought a GNU snowboard and Rideo Rodeo bindings from here 4 years ago, and now the right binding is not securing tightly onto the snowboard. At the time, I thought I was being a smart cookie by buying aluminum bindings (sales guy seemed to agree) thinking they would be virtually indestructible. Little did I know that metal on a board was not going to be great because of the impact absorption, or lack thereof. However, I am only finding this out this season because I havnt gone up a lot the past 3 seasons due to the dismal snow. Brought it to the store and the manager, Devon, assisted me. He was kind enough to take it to the repair shop to diagnose, and possibly repair the bindings. He promised to call me back later, which he did. The verdict was that the screws could no longer secure the board and were stripped and couldnt be removed. Devon refused to replace or return the item since he deemed it to be a "wear and tear" issue. I was under the impression that people who had bought items before they changed the return policy in 2013 (I bought the items in 2012) were grandfathered in with the unlimited return policy, however, I was wrong. Devon, and his general manager, Rob, both said that it was past the 1 year return period, and in their opinion it was due to wear and tear. I told them I was dissatisfied and felt it to be a manufacturing defect...why would $280 bindings fail after less than 50 uses? Seriously, these things are made to last less than that? The thing that really got me was how Devon and Rob were so rude and condescending. Devon had said that since I didnt seem to have any luck purchasing snow gear from the store, I should take my business somewhere else. Rob was also very dismissive and sarcastic when I told him I didnt feel comfortable now with the purchases I made at REI recently. At least thats one good piece of advice that came out of their mouths--to take my business elsewhere.

Apparently REI has changed their 100% satisfaction guarantee. My wife bought a pair of Keen sandals about three years ago. She only wore them around town in the summer. The seams started to come out so we took them back to REI in Sacramento. The customer service clerk told us that REI changed their policy so that they will accept returns no more than a year old. Really? That means a pair of sandals purchased at REI are only guaranteed for one summer. For years, I have been a member and shopped at REI (and paid their higher prices) mainly for the product guarantee. What good is the REI membership now? REI membership is now no different than any other rewards program. I know some customers take advantage of generous return policies, but I know REI could establish a policy that would not punish good customers with the bad. Very disappointed.

Great store. Best in the region (biggest selection). Knowledgeable and friendly staff. I have to scratch my head at a few reviews on here of people complaining about not being able to return a pair of sandals or snowboard gear from 3-4 years ago. Really?! They give you a full year no questions asked. I think that is incredibly generous. I returned a pair of Maui Jim sunglasses after 3 months and felt grateful to be able to do that. I couldnt fathom trying to get a store to let me return a pair of 3+ year old sandals. I dont know of any other store with a no questions asked 1 year satisfaction guarantee return policy. Love REI and love being a member!

They have alot of good stuff at decent prices. However, I feel that I am at a giant mutated starbucks and this triggers a strong fight or flight response in me. So far I have been able to choose the flight response but only with strenuous self determination. I literally break a sweat. On May 24 2014 I entered, secured a pair of Salomon hiking boots that were on sale and exited quickly. I think i did this in less than 5 minutes and my have held my breath the entire time. It was a great workout.

This store is well laid out, and has a wide selection of ski, camping, hiking, biking, rock climbing, and other outdoor gear. Over the years they have added a lot of clothing. The staff are knowledgeable and can help you plan local trips as well. The main drawback is that things seem to be significantly higher prices than what you can get elsewhere. Sign up to be an REI member to save some money, but even then, you are paying a premium on the gear to get the higher service level.

Customer service is subpar. Expect to get little to no service. Went in to buy new hiking gear; backpack, shoes, sticks, and other misc items, left with just a backpack. Waited for 15 minutes at the shoes and received no help on purchasing a pair of $140 trail runners. Waited over 20 minutes at checkout with only 1 register and 4 people in line, including myself. Unfortunately, I wont be going back to this REI. Though items were in-stock and store was clean.
