I have lived in Palo Alto for two months and I needed a bike. I went to the Cardinal Bike store in order to buy a bike and afterwards have it back . They have this policy: If you buy old you can return it in the end of your stay and have 30% of the value. If it is new they return 40% and they do small repairs for 2 years. Well it did not seem bad. I bought a nice used bike, a locker and a back light… 1 - The bike had a problem in first day and they refused to change the bike for other one; 2 – I was there for 7 weeks, and I had to go there 7 times with all kind of problems in the bike; 3 – First time I was there because of a malfunction of the bike they started speaking Spanish with each other saying “put some oil in that and pretend to fix something and that’s ok”. Bad luck, I’m Portuguese and speak Spanish… 4 – I went there the week before I wanted to return the bike because of another malfunction… They said that it was not a problem. When I went there to return the bike, with the receipt of what I have paid in the day I have purchased it they just said “We don’t have money come back tomorrow”. I said to them that I had a plane to catch the other day and the response was “it’s your problem”. I gave the bike to a friend of mine… I preferred to do it like this so that they could not trick another person with that thing. I don’t think they will sell bikes for much more time having this behavior. Meanwhile just runaway from this place!!!

My husband called ahead to ask if they had a certain type of used bike within our price range. Luckily, they did! We headed over there the same day but, magically, when we got there that bike had "just" been sold--yeah, right. So we looked around and found a used bike that we liked. We were quoted a fairly reasonable price outside (where the used bikes are), and they even mentioned that they might be able to throw in different tires--we didnt want the type that were on the bike. However, once we brought the bike inside and started looking at tires, the salesperson we were working with disappeared and a ruder salesperson took over. Suddenly, the price went up by $50 and the different tires were no longer included--they also refused to let us exchange the brand new tires on the bike for the ones we wanted. At the very end, the guy brought out another bike for us to look at which fit the description of the original bike we came to see--only this bike was about $150 more than what they had quoted over the phone... yeah. We did not buy any bike from them. Furthermore, they dont put price tags on a lot of their used bikes so that (seemingly) they can just jack the price up once you seem interested in a bike--lame! Also, the staff there were just generally creepy and/or dismissive. Were never going there again--stay away!!

I was absolutely BLOWN AWAY with the quality, speed, and downright greatness Jeff (The guy with the big white beard) handled himself while building up my bike! I brought in a 1970s Chicago made Schwinn with little more than a frame and some cheap rims. After discussing my plans to make a daily 14 mile commute into SF, we settled on swapping out my single speed rear wheel with a 3 speed internal hub, added new brakes, original Schwinn fenders, a luggage rack, etc. He rebuilt me a classic hub, did everything I asked for, and more! To top it off, I had a sudden change in my schedule, and he was able to do everything I wanted FOUR DAYS EARLY! And to top it off again, I got everything I asked for for a VERY REASONABLE price!! Man was I, and am I, blown away with the absolutely fantastic service and quality. I will definitely be bringing my bike back for more upgrades, and recommending everyone I know to this bike shop!

Dishonest people to deal with. I called ahead and inquired to see if they had a certain tire in stock. The person on the phone told me they did and quoted me a $13.99 price. When I got there, I picked up my tires, and went to check out. The store manager was the one ringing us up and was not the person I talked to on the phone. He tried to charge me $19.99 per tire. When he told me my total, I called him out on it and he then adjusted the price. When I inspected the tires, they had a $13.99 price tag on them. I cannot believe he just tried to rip me off. My conclusion is that he tried to pull a fast one on me as I look like an affluent Stanford student and dress nicely. The manage is rude, obnoxious, and completely dishonest. Do your business somewhere else.

I had a problem with my chain ring. The mechanic helped me get the old one off because it was stuck and didnt charge for the favor. He was really helpful and gave lots of useful tips. He is a really friendly guy. On the other hand their orders take a long time to come in. I originally was told that my new chain ring would be in the following Friday...it wasnt. When I came in on Friday they said it would come the following Wednesday. When I called on Wednesday they said that the employee who opens the boxes wasnt in so they didnt know if my part had come yet (really? can it be that hard?). It is a friendly bike shop and I plan to shop there in the future but be aware that orders may take longer than you think to come in.

I was just up at Stanford visiting my daughter who inherited my 1980s bike and it had a flat tire that seemed to be reoccurring even though she had taken it to the Stanford bike shop on campus. It was Saturday and the shop was very busy but Ruben fixed us right up. He replaced the strip between the rim and the tube that was off, so the tire kept going flat as the spokes would puncture the tube. He checked the gears too and even though he did not have time to replace the housing he took it apart and lubed it so that my daughter could change gears more easily. This worked out very well in such great timing as we were riding over the Golden Gate bridge that morning. Thank you Ruben for the extra bit of care!

They did the best tune up my bike has ever had and at a very reasonable price. The gears work better than they ever had before. After my last tune up at another bike shop, there was still noise when using the lowest and highest gears. Now that has all gone away. The brakes are the tightest theyve ever been and they cleaned the bike. The price was the same as my last tune up, but they also replaced a spoke and trued a wheel. I brought it in on a Saturday and they offered to have it ready by Tuesday, which was great.

Pros: Low prices. They let me try bikes outside for as long as I wanted, having given them a drivers license for collateral. The guy who does the repairs gives good, down-to-earth recommendations. Cons: I asked them to pack my bike for shipping and it turns out they left out a quick-release skewer. They said theyd compensate me, but never did so. Getting service can take awhile. Dont trust that theyll do what you ask over the phone.
