Mendocino is a coastal town, and predictably, the local cuisine is seafood-oriented, leaving vegetarians hungry after a great day of hiking the state parks or being blown about by the awesome sea winds. If you tell the proprietor of the lodgings youve taken that youre a vegan, they are sure to tell you to go the ovo-lacto vegetarian Ravens restaurant. If youd like to eat wild mushrooms and Moroccan peanut sauce for mucho $$$, more power to you, I say, but if youre looking for some normal vegan food, Corners of the Mouth grocery store is about to become your best friend. To be honest, I had to look up the name of this store on the web. Im not even sure it has a sign on it, but you cant miss it once youre on Ukiah St. Built inside an old, red church, this organic/natural market is something of a last gasp of the forgotten Mendocino of the 1970s. It has the slightly dark and dusty feeling we all knew before the advent of Whole Foods, and its a bit of a surprise to walk into this shop, wedged as it is between pricey gift shops and self-satisfied art galleries. There is a small organic produce section and all of the packaged foods a vegan needs to eat well while on vacation in Mendocino, provided your lodgings have a kitchenette. Rice/soy milks, tofu, cereal, crackers, rice, pasta and other basics are here, and I must take a minute in this review to sing the praises of a local bread they carry - Bruce Bread. Vegan and absolutely YUMMY! Driving along the coast, my husband and I made a scrumptious breakfast of tea and Bruce Bread-almond butter-blackberry jelly sandwiches. Prices are high, but one expects that in Mendocino, and youll certainly spend less buying your dinner and picnic fixings at this market than in trying to find anything to eat at the local restaurants. Corners of the Mouth makes trips to Mendocino good for vegans and were glad its there!

The produce is always killer! The people there are super friendly. They boast a conscious selection of locally grown organic foods and an overly abundant selection of everything else that you wouldnt expect to see in a small market. Beautiful! The location is a church and carries with it a nice warm atmosphere. They also have discounts for the needy...and a dynamite herb/bulk room, and vitamin/naturopathic pharmacy.

Wandered in here on a recent camping trip and fell in love. Housed in an old church building, this charming market has everything from groceries to tea and housewares. Be sure to check it out!
