Ive been here a couple times to get my bike serviced and they may be the best experiences Ive had at bike shops in Portland. Not only were they friendly and welcoming right as I walked in, but they took care of my bike right away. Ive walked in fully intending on dropping my bike off, as most shops Ive gone to are usually backed up and need days to do simple repairs, but they put my bike up on a rack immediately and I was out riding again an hour later. (YMMV) I bought a custom built bike off of some dude on Craigslist which seemed perfectly functional upon my test ride. Three weeks later, I was a pro at patching tubes as I probably had 10 flats within that time period. Try as I might, I couldnt figure out what was causing the issue. Throw in a chain that snapped, and some broken spokes, I was beyond frustrated over my recent purchase. I took my bike here just to get my spokes fixed and the mechanic went above and beyond helping me get it setup. He took the work of a handyman and fixed it up like a licensed contractor (his words, not mine). He also comped some parts and labor out of sympathy, which was much appreciated. tl;dr: If you need to get your bike serviced, I cant recommend this place enough.

Ive been going to these guys for around 6 months for service and I am very happy with not only how Ive been treated, but the workmanship and follow through they provide. Although they have many customers, I often feel like I am a priority and they provide me with the very specialized service that I need. They are also way more reasonable than I would ever be on parts that they replace in terms of parts breaking or wearing out prematurely (cables, chains etc). In addition they take the time to train you on your bike and how to do certain procedures yourself for instance like measure a chain for wear or show you where and how de-railer cables typically fail. Another example is I took my bike in to get fitted with fenders, for an appointment I had scheduled the following week (we just wanted to pick the fenders on this particular day), but the tech in looking at my bike found something unusual with the shifter, put it on the stand and made some adjustments - i left with a better bike. These guys are what Ive been missing.

Met the owner a while back on the street and he was incredibly nice, engaging and excited about all things bikes and Stark Street neighbors. I also love the location, the people are super nice, and both the bikes and employees are attractive. I give a less than 5 star rating as I believe one of the service persons was not as forthcoming about a recommended repair as I would expect for such a wonderful environment. I think West End Bikes will and can do excellent service work as noted by the stellar reviews on here. Many of us are crunched for time or put our faith (and products) in the hands of professionals but please consider looking closely at the problem yourself or check in with a friend or relative who knows a little about bike repairs before taking yours in here. This way you can better ensure your repair requires what they recommend and if nothing else, you are able to clearly articulate the problem. Knowledge really is power.

I was visiting Portland and rode my bike past the store, so I decided to stop in. I was really just checking the place out, but Aaron came over and started chatting with me. He saw I was wearing Rapha and showed me Velocio and told me how much he liked it. He saw that I was on vacation and just suggested I look the brand up some time. It was clear that he really just wanted to share a brand he liked and wasnt trying to push me into buying anything. He was so friendly that I asked him questions about titanium bikes as Im in the market for one. Again, he spent a lot of time with me and thoughtfully answered all of my questions. I figured while he was being so helpful, Id ask him some questions I had about saddles. I was really impressed that he again took the time to help me even though he knew I was only in town for the week. This was my only experience with West End Bikes, but I was truly impressed.

While its true that the employee are hard to spot (get matching shirts guys!) and no one spoke to me when I first entered the store, I found the employee I eventually spoke with to be highly informative, helpful and very friendly. Im new to cycling, but Stacey and Mike both helped me figure out what kind of bike will best suit my current riding style (commuting) and future aspirations (centuries here I come!!). Also, they were willing to keep the shop open a little late to accommodate my work schedule. And the location is perfect to test ride my new Ruby: Stark St. has a protected bike lane, with lots of bumpy asphalt and train tracks to cross all the way down to the waterfront. This shop was recommended to be my an avid triathlete. Its nice to have a shop that can support such a wide range of cyclists.

Id give 4.5 stars if I could. Overall, Ive always been offered assistance in this store, whenever I stop in. Thats not always true in all bike shops in Portland (as many of us know). Theyve tried hard to answer questions and accommodate my needs as an atypical (read: bigger guy) road bike rider. Their service department is typically swamped, but fair on price. They also have the best mechanic Ive met in Portland; Jack. Hes super nice and really awesome. My biggest knock is a sometimes lack of selection. Its in a tight spot, and its tough to keep a huge stock on-hand, Im sure. Either faster delivery of ordered items, or better on-hand stock, would up this to a premier bike shop for me.

The mechanics are awesome and helpful. Even though the store caters upscale of my bolted-together Frankenstein bike, Ive always walked away feeling great about the work. One of the mechanics in particular has been extraordinarily helpful and kind the last couple times Ive gone in. Mark I think his name is. Has very prominent veins on his forearms probably from riding like 400 miles per week. In spite of which he always seems super pleased to help me fix my dumpy little 9-mile-round-trip commuter. Give that guy a raise. Or buy him a pizza or something. Edit: after reading the other reviews it might have been Mike. He helped me re-adjust my seat 5/17/16 if that helps.

Man this place is great! It really is helpful to get your bearings as to where to get great service and where not to. Or better, just to know where you dont want to do business. I was here to meet with the owner for a set appointment. The owner made me wait over 45 minutes and was really rude, never apologizing for the wait, and only opportunistic. He took my product samples, (he said for his son, no less), and never got back to me. I gave him 3 of my $65 ( retail price) products. I just hope his son really liked them.
