Along with my regular weekly groceries, I purchased "Fresh Day Boat Dry Scallops". I went home, cooked the scallops and when I went to eat the scallops, I noticed a strange taste. I broke one of the scallops in half and it reeked with the scent of ammonia. I went did the same to the others and each of the scallops were the same. The scallops led to an upset stomach and vomiting. I packed up all the scallops and brought it back to the store. I asked to speak to the manager who was dismissive and unconcerned when I explained what had happened. After a second explanation, he finally gave a disingenuous apology. "Sorry for what happened" he said. The manager goes a step further when he directs the cashier to issue a refund in a manner in which he is doing me a favor. He says to the cashier, "Yeah, just give him the refund" and then turns he back to me. I was disappointed when I ate the scallops but was furious when returning to the store when I was met with blatant disrespect when I was seeking to notify the manager of the issue and ensuring a resolution where someone else will not be buying anymore of that batch of scallops. I am a weekly shopper at Fairway and have always referred others to the brand whenever the topic came up because I believed in the quality of the products and the customer service at the stores. I certainly hope this incident is isolated and of rare occurrence.

I love Fairway and was really excited to have one open nearby several years ago. While they do have the cleanliness and variety of items that Ive come to expect, I have a few complaints about this store. One is that I have had to return the meat Ive bought on several occasions because it smelled funky despite being purchased before the expiration (although to their credit, they gave me store credit when I brought it back). Another is that the prepared food stations are usually lackluster. While I was excited by this component (which is not in all of their stores), it seems like its kind of a neglected part of the store with inconsistent offerings, except the sushi area, which is decent. Also, the cart handlers in the parking lot rarely offer to help take my cart back (not a major complaint, but its a noticeable disparity from other Fairways). Produce and specialty items are plentiful, but I think this store could step it up to meet (or excel) Fairway standards, particularly for the relatively higher cost of items compared to the other grocery stores in the area.

oh my I went there for breakfast, let me say first Im not a regular customer at this location. so I go to the area where they make breakfast, I stand there for about two minutes the young lady who working there doesnt say anything, no good morning, no how can I help you. Now a regular customer walks up says hi, and she says hi papa. knew his order already and starts to make it. I wait a few seconds only to ask her if she making breakfast only to get a rude response that she is. I was like Im standing here and she did that even bother to ask to help me. She like I could ask someone else. She is rude person. She a black female with burgundy hair in braids and I feel she be stocking food not serving people cause she is a rude as a bit@@ch....I just order a coffee and crossiant. The register girl was nicer then her and I asked me if I wanted breakfast, I said no cause it looks like if the girl doesnt know you she doesnt want to serve you. plus I didnt want spit in my food..

After a few years its clear the area needed something else. But folks knew that before it was opened. The prices are laughable. The help is mostly disinterested and not local, especially at the breakfast and lunch counters. They make you feel like theyre doing you a favor by lifting their heads up, same goes at checkout. The floors look dirty. Theres an out of touch, corporate feel in the store, like management is calling corporate rather than managing a local store and its needs. Someone finally adjusted some of the aisles after a few years of nonsense, making it slightly easier to actually shop and walk around. Parking out in front should be left for actual shoppers not employees where their cars sit all day, forcing shoppers to take a staircase or elevator to visit the store. Silly. Eskimo bearded hipsters wearing gazelles may flock for $17 quarter pound Gouda but locals who need the basics cant reasonably shop there. This may work in Manhattan.

Pros: A wide selection of various types of foods and drink making for a one stop shopping trip whether for routine shopping or holiday specialties. The coffee department has a thorough selection and service is prompt. Cons: Aisles are arranged in a confusing, maze like manner designed to slow down the consumer and promote increased spending. Service behind the butcher counter is mediocre to horrendous. Theyre busy doing their job duties and counter service is performed reluctantly, and a few times items incorrectly priced. The items on display in the seafood department looks more like bait than food. Ive never patronized the deli counter as its always crowded. Lastly the prices are way too expensive, especially regarding staples like juice or eggs (with the exception of teaser sale prices). In my opinion the neighborhood would have been better served by a Pathmark.

I give Douglaston Fairway 5 stars! This is the only Fairway whos deli department staff really respects kosher and strict vegetarianism. The never look insulted or at me like Im a bother when I request they change their gloves after handling meat, and most of the time I dont even have to. They have a kosher slicer used specifically for cheese. Meat has never been on this slicer. Most supermarkets, when it comes close to closing, will start wiping down their slicers and out of the 4 they have, they only use one, for both meat and cheese. I will NEVER buy my cheese from anywhere else. Douglaston Fairway has earned my trust in this department. It really holds a lot of weight for my family to eat cheese, and not have to worry that it was ever cross contaminated with meat. Thank you!

My wife works here. She tells me the place is full of ex-cons with bad habits and ill-mannered. I believe in rehabilitation, but this place has a reputation for hiring those that cant get a job anywhere else, scheduling employees 6 days week, part-time as to avoid reaching hours of criteria to qualify employees for insurance. Maximizing labor, and profits while employees are underpaid. Prices compared to other markets are outrageous. My wife prefers not to buy there because of their prices. Even with her employee discount, its not reasonably priced. I do like their extensive selection of products. Still to expensive and hiring practices make it obvious its all about maximizing profits. Its no wonder why they had to close down several markets down.

I frequent the Fairway at Douglaston and usually have a decent experience. Today, I was very disappointed in the service or lack of at the butcher counter. Waited for quite some time while there were at least 4 people behind the counter going about their business. When I inquired if the gentlemen standing in line before me can be helped, I received a rude response that there was only one person and we were just going to have to wait. In the meantime another woman who also approached the counter in front of us received polite responses to her questions. I didnt appreciate the butcher being selective in who he would be polite to. Wont be going there again!!
