Caveat - never ate there but this review is based on why. Went in once and it was a very strong bad fish smell. Yeah, I know - its a seafood place. But Ive been to many and none smelled that bad or strong. It made me question the freshness. We decided to try something else and come back another time. We had just moved to the area. Shortly after that, my wife was on the way to work at 5:30am during a bad snowstorm. Traffic in front of her stopped short and to avoid a collision she steered off the road where there was a cutout in the curb, which looked like the entrance to a parking lot (she couldnt tell due to the snow covering everything, but the curb cutout was visible). She ended up in what turned out to be a grass area just behind the Metropolitan Seafood place. She tried to back out but her wheels kept spinning. She got out of the car and ended up getting locked out, with the engine running. It was below zero, extremely cold and snowing. Fortunately, she had her phone and called me to come and help. A few big guys in white aprons came out of the Metropolitan Seafood and started yelling at her, telling her she had to "get that car the h*ll out of there". She was distraught at this point. Did they think she was there because she likes standing out in the freezing cold during a snowstorm? Who sees a woman in a situation like that and doesnt offer to help or ask her if she wanted to come inside until help arrives? I arrived and saw some busted up pallets and other wood scraps off to the side of the building. I started to grab some to put under the wheels and here comes the two knuckleheads out to yell at me, telling me to get the h*ll away from the building. They were extremely nasty. It took a long time to get the car out of there, and because of this treatment I will never, ever set foot in that establishment. I dont want people like that cooking my food, and theres a lesson to be learned in how you treat people - you never know who they are.

Metropolitan has good seafood, but this complaint is directed more toward the owner. He is a scumbag with a temper. On the Sunday following the major hurricane, I stopped by the Sunoco gas station near the restaurant at around 8:30am. There was a long line of cars that stretched down to the restaurant entrance. Not thinking anything of it at 8:30 on a Sunday morning, I was blocking the entrance and did not see a "Do Not Block Entrance" sign in front of me. After a couple minutes, the owner comes flying around the parking lot, gets out of his truck, and starts cussing at me. He was using the f word multiple times and I am glad I know who the guy was. The owners name is Mark. As a somewhat frequent customer to his establishment, I was appalled by the way he approached me and the language he used. I would imagine he would never talk like that to a customer in his business, and he should not be talking like that to people in front of his restaurant. Too bad I knew it was the owner as soon as he approached me. Again, the place has good food, but the owner is a jerk. I certainly wont give the restaurant business any longer.

As a Maryland native, summertime isnt summertime without steamed blue claw crabs - and living in NJ for 26 years hasnt dulled that desire. After calling several local fish markets who had no crabs, I hit on Metropolitan Seafood. Mark - the owner - was incredibly helpful, telling me what size crabs he had, what I could expect and when I could get them. When I called the next am, he indicated hed gotten beautiful heavy crabs that morning and actually offered to take a photo of them and send it to me (sweet right?). Didnt make him take the photo, just told him Id be there in two hours. And as promised, when I arrived I had 2-dozen nice size, steamed crabs waiting for me. Also picked up some of their homemade gazpacho and a tomato/avocado salsa - both of which were fresh, interesting and delicious. That night we ate it all, and every last ingredient was fabulous. The crabs were cooked perfectly, heavily seasoned as they should be and filled with the magic that is sweet blue claw meat. Thanks Mark. Well be back!!!

Metropolitan Seafood used to be located in downtown Clinton, NJ until they got so popular that they decided to open a much bigger, much nicer place on Route 22. The staff are very knowledgeable about seafood, and generally happy enough to help you if youre unsure about something. This is of course a great place to buy raw cuts of fish to use for a meal of your own. However, they also have great seafood sandwiches and meals which you can buy and eat to-go. The menu from what I remember changes pretty frequently, but everything Ive had has been excellent. It is a bit pricey, but with good quality, fresh seafood youd expect this.

Awesome service, the chef, for lack of a better word, was very knowledgeable and as a sales professional myself, very good at selling the product. Very top knotch fish and would recommend to anyone. My gf is a seafood afficionado and said that the quality was the highest out there. Matter of fact, the gentleman offered us raw samples of the scallops and they indeed were high quality, didnt get sick and it was very sweet. Anyone in the market for seafood that is 100% high quality, dont go anywhere else. Although a little pricy, you are paying for the quality and the convenience.

Was really impressed with the selection of great food, cheeses, breads, etc... If you want to entertain, and put out a killer platter, this place is a one stop shop. tiny markup from retail prices in order to prepare your fish to take-out - especially considering how well they package their take-out. Order some raw clams or oysters, and check out how well they package them! Much better than shucking yourself, and only a couple bucks more. Call ahead to see what they have oyster-wise. Sauces and marinades all look legit.

We recently moved out west and have been trying to find a place that sells fresh seafood so after some searching on the internet i figured i would try this place even tho it was a bit of a drive. So after walking up to the fish section i was AMAZED at the quality and freshness to the point i walked back and did a double take cause i thought it was fake. The staff was extremely polite and helpful. This will be the only place i ever buy seafood from now on. Cant wait to try some of the lunch specials!

Without question these best fishmonger in NJ. Anybody who knows anything about getting all variety of fresh fish and shellfish in the area knows about this place. The oyster selection is amazing and they will shuck them and place them on an ice tray for you. They also have an amazing selection of whole fish and fish fillet. It truly is a gourmands dream. To top it all of they are probably the nicest guys you will ever do business with. Now if they only had a champagne bar....
