I shop this store (Winnetka) almost weekly, on Tuesdays for the 25% discount. There is a large variety of merchandise to choose from, and it seems to turn over very quickly, so there are many new things each time I go. Prices have risen recently as more people are shopping thrift stores during harder economic times, but thats no different at this store than other thrift stores. Pricing in the store is erratic, some items are a real steal, others are priced unreasonably high. It seems that the people assigning prices dont always know the value of things. The staff are generally courteous and as helpful as they can be, but most have limited English skills. The few times Ive spoken with the store manager, Ive found him to be curt and not customer friendly. I once pointed out an item to him that was obviously used and priced higher than the new retail price. He said hed take it in the back to re-evaluate, meaning I couldnt negotiate a lower price and purchase the item -- it reappeared on the shelf 45 minutes later with no change in price. It annoys me that they mix up craft items when packaging them -- two identical skeins of yarn arent put in the same package, but are separated and combined with other yarns so you have to buy both packages to get the two matching skeins. They now have three dressing rooms instead of one (I remember when there werent any!), but they could use more. One HUGE convenience is that clothing is sorted by size! And there are many mirrors in the clothing area, not just the dressing rooms. Staff are constantly straightening things up so the store is kept neat. I continue to shop at this store as it is conveniently located, has a huge selection, and I can get more for my dollar than purchasing new items.

If youre looking to decorate your home with things from all over the world at LOW COST, tea sets/trinkets/candles/candle holders/artwork/kitchenware/etc. (some of which are entirely handmade), this is the place for you. If youre looking to go "thrifting" for clothing deals, this is NOT the place. Though, they have a GREAT selection, youre hard pressed to find something you ACTUALLY want to wear for less than $10-20 in the shirts, and $15-30 in pants. Their book section is full of things, but not much youd be interested in, unless youre in dire need of some kind of soup for souls, re-reading classic science fiction, or self-help books that are actually self indulgent. Their electronics selection appears to have many things youd be interested in, but the majority of their things that are said to "function properly" actually do not. It turns out they have no specialists, just people that need a job. Once you arrive home & get busy with the product, and find it does not work, their return policy is a slim chance of success. Their idea of "testing" a product is to see if it turns on. Job done. No shame. Actually, their return policy on everything is a slim chance. The employees have no specialty & very little tact or respect for customers & subsequent service. Luckily, I only go there for the decor & kitchenware. Ive found amazing things there at excellent prices.

This store was way, way better before Savers came into the picture and raised the prices dramatically. They also changed the layout of the odds and ends section to the far left as you walk into that area from front door. They used to have the best deals. I used to love rummaging through all the knick knacks and household items for well over an hour. It was like a treasure hunt - never knew what you might uncover. When they labeled the aisles and separated everything (just like the Savers stores) it just became... boring... I loved how they used to just put stuff wherever, way more interesting and fun to shop there! I used to walk to the checkout with more than I could barely hang onto. Now, I might have 2-4 items that Ill purchase at one time...on the plus side, I guess Im saving money because Unique (more like Savers) isnt getting as much of my money. Unique? Not anymore... just like all the others.

I agree with the rest of the reviews. Big rip off on merchandise they get for free claiming to be non profit. No returns policy so yo better make sure it works. Feel bad for the people that bought a radio for 99.00 and could not return it cause it didnt work. Better off going to the one on E. Side of hwy. 100 at 36th Ave. N. in crystal/robbinsdale. They have great prices and an awesome return policy. All there profits go to relief type work. Donate my stuff there also and they give me a receipt I can claim up to 500.00 on taxs. When you turn off 100 onto 30th go east past cub f. About 2 blocks on the right directly across the road from the gas station last store on end of a mini mall. You will love it and save 100s on cloths electronicsignature furniture and beds. You name it they got it special day for extra discounts too.

They really should improve their policies on how to start kicking people out earlier to make sure no one goes over the closing time. I checked out at 9:03 (closing time at 9) because I was distracted and with a toddler, and got some major attitude from the employees, albeit very polite. I understand they were tired and ready to go home, but then they should send reminders for people to leave more often and maybe have a policy that no one will check out after the time, so people dont take their time, which is annoying for them but common for most stores. The passive aggressive confrontation was really disconcerting. He was really nice about it, but he obviously wanted to say other not so nice things. Please change your policies to ensure this doesnt happen again...it was horrible :-(

Terrible place, everything is overpriced especially the furniture, all of it is garbage and yet it is often over $100 dollars for something that will take another $100 to make look decent and that something wouldnt be worth the time. And when something is actually worth putting the time and money into redoing, they price it as if it has been redone and is in the best condition it could ever be in. I once found a secretary desk there, nice desk needed refinishing though, had seen similar ones at antique stores (refinished) going for around 300-400; unique was selling it for $1000, they didnt even bother looking up the cost of similar items before pricing the thing! Who ever buys it will have to be a complete idiot. Waste of time, dont go!

Make sure you test any electronics you buy. I bought a record player for $99 after I was told it worked and tested out fine. Turns out they lied. When I took it back to get my money back the manager, Greg, said they dont do refunds on electronics. Even after he admitted that all they do when they test something is plug the stupid thing in and see if it lights up. So they sold me something, said it worked and then claimed no responsibility when confronted with their lie. Shameful business practice if you ask me. Seeing as how everything is donated. Hell of scam Unique Thrift, hell of a scam.
