The Astoria Pastry Shop was another recommendation from fellow blogger Genie28. Being new to the area, we had no idea that Greektown was pretty much within walking distance from Comerica Park which was our final destination of the night. We drove down Monroe Street looking for the shop. After driving around the cramped streets for a few minutes, we realized how close we were to CoPa and ended up pulling into a lot and just parking for the night. We headed back to Monroe Street to find the Astoria Pastry Company and couldn’t believe what we found. The Astoria Pastry Company is located across the street from the Greektown Casion along a strip of road that is home to a lot of restaurants. There was a steady line of people going in an out so we figured it must be one of those “must hit” places. When you walk through the door, you’re immediately assaulted by a huge case of homemade pastry’s, cookies, and ice cream. It was very overwhelming. We didn’t know where to start. A homemade chocolate chunk cookie caught my eye and that’s what I got. The cookie was huge. Probably the size of a small plate. It was soft, but had some bite to it and it was filled with gooey chocolate chunks. It took all of thirty seconds for me to polish it off. My girlfriend ordered a black and white cookie. I’m not a Seinfeld fan, but she was trying to tell me a story about a Seinfeld episode where George got a similar cookie and they made some stupid jokes about. After a pretty big meal, the cookie was a little too much, so she wrapped it up and we had cookies for the ballpark. She also got a strawberry smoothie to go with dessert. I took a few drinks and not being a fruit smoothie guy, I found it pretty good. She said there must have been some fresh fruit in there. For the two cookies and smoothie, we paid about $8. Not bad for such a fancy shop. There were a few tables along the back wall, so we sat down and enjoyed our snacks and did a little people watching. I’m glad we made it to Greektown before the game and I’m really glad we got a recommendation for this place.

My husband and I had went here as our last stop for our Date Night last Saturday, Sept. 21st 2013. Ive heard lots of GREAT things about the place and read a multitude of AWESOME reviews from Yelp and Google. I decided that this place was definitely a must stop for us since we were in the area for Date Night and needed a treat to end our night. When we arrived at Astoria Pastry Shop there were many customers as soon as you walk in, it was somewhat confusing because we didnt know if there was a line or what we needed to do to get service, so we just looked around and waited for an associate that was free. There was a nice girl there that answered my questions politely. However, there was another girl there that was quite rude. She asked my husband if he needed help with anything, so my husband began to order the desserts he wanted, a Carrot Cake and a Red Velvet Cupcake, both he did not like because they were not very moist. The rude girl then said to the other girl that answered my questions "People are stupid, I didnt ask his if he wanted anything!" She seemed as if she just didnt want to help my husband, so the nice girl began to get the desserts for my husband and mine as well, I got a Lemon Macaron and Chocolate Cannoli, both were DELICIOUS!!! I would definitely come back to this place, but I never forget a face, so I will definitely REFUSE to have that girl EVER help me when I come in. We came to enjoy DESSERT not an UNPLEASANT ATTITUDE. ***UPDATE*** We went there in the past couple weeks and it seems that theyve had a major improvement! Service was Great and I LOVE their dessert selection!!! French Macarons are really YUMMY!!!

We are visiting Detroit for Movement Festival and decided to stop at Astoria Pastry shop on the way to the festival. As we entered we were confused as to where the line stated and we lined up behind two girls near the smoothie station. After the girls in for the of us got their order, the girl behind the counter greeted us with a smile and a friendly "Hello" and then began, or so we thought, preparing to make the next order. After we waited for 5min she then came back and snapped at that we had to line up at the front. We asked her why she didnt tell us there was a line and that we didnt know and she snapped at us again and rolled her eyes at us as she turned away. We were then told that there was no line and that if you were not ready then you will be skipped. Everybody in the shop was shocked and when a father with two kids asked if they could help everyone in a first come first serve order, he was confronted with laughter and rude comments from two of the women behind the counter. The little girl started crying and her brother looked as though he was also about to cry as well. The father said that he was leaving and the whole family was then laughed out of the shop by the staff, much to the horror of all the other customers. He asked to speak with a manager and one of the women said rudely and sarcastically, "Here you go sir, heres a business card. Have a nice day." Worst experience in any establishment in my life and completely traumatic to those poor little kids. The pastries were great but the service and the attitude of the stuff was totally unacceptable.

Words cannot describe this bakery! Its like youve walked into dessert paradise and I want to stay forever. :) Its a must stop spot everytime Im in or near Detroit. Have never had anything that wasnt extremely delicious! Im addicted to the chocolate cannoils but the cheesecake (all of the flavors Ive tried, there are many) is great, brownies of many flavors are fantastic, baklava is perfection, kids love the cinnamon rolls, cookies, muffins, biscotti, even the ice cream! And this is just a sampling of all they have to offer. Customer service is always fantastic even when theyre crazy busy after a ball game or a big event. The staff is top notch, polite, helpful & expedient! If you havent been, youre missing out. It is one of Detroits finest jewels. Ive never seen anything like it anywhere in the country NYC, LA, San Fran. Prices are fair, quality is A+, as is customer service. Make Astoria one of your go to spots when youre in or around Greek Town. You wont be disappointed.

I have gone to Astoria my entire life and look forward to each trip as much as if it were Christmas. The shop has seriously declined over the years in both quality of the products and the quality of the service. Today when I stopped by for some baklava the selection behind the glass looked sad, deflated and rather burnt some of the cookies looked so shameful I would have pitched them to the alley rats. What the hell is going on? It took at least 5 minutes before the two women working there stopped yacking long enough to realize there was a customer in the store. The service was lousy. They carried on their conversation so loudly that I was unsure they even heard my order because the woman allegedly taking my order did not look at me in the eye or nod, or acknowledge she heard me in any way. Totally poor manners and crappy customer service.
