As we explore more of the surrounding areas outside of Iowa City, we keep running across incredible places like Stringtown. Weve heard about this place from friends for a while and decided today was the time to check it out - what a find was Stringtown! The building is located on a slightly less than paved road, just down the street from the Twin County Cheese factory. This simple building is absolutely magic. Those hippies among us will appreciate that no electricity is used (these folks are Amish after all). The skylights and gas lights work well to enlighten your shopping experience. As you walk in, youre greeted by four aisles of bliss. The first contains tons of candy, pies, moon pies and baking sweets, as well as more types of flour than I know existed and tons of bulk spices that are about 30% of the price you see in traditional grocery stores. The remainder of the aisles contain everything from hand made granola, and noodles, to bread and pies that are only rivaled by the church ladies! At the back fo the store, sits the cooler where there are some amazing finds. The cheese selection is ample and the prices excellent. The whole cream butter that comes by the pound and if youre down, they sell blocks of lard. The block freezers in the back of the walking in cooler contain Amish grown beef, chickens and turkey as well as fresh frozen fruit by the pound. The best item we sampled here however was the beef jerky - straight up the best weve ever had. Stringtown is a gem of a store and one that should be discovered by everyone. The prices are great, the selection is solid when youre in the mood for basic cooking necessities, and youll certainly find something you werent expecting. Word to all - they only take cash and checks so make sure youve got enough so you can take home everything that looks good.

My family is originally from Richmond. I have been coming to Stringtown for years. The Better Butter is my absolute favorite. Years ago I was asked to wear a different blouse when I visited... apparently they didnt like that my top button was accidentally undone. They put a note on my receipt to dress more conservatively. My apologies. There is nothing these people could say to me that would deter me from coming in and spending my hard earned money. The prices are always low and the food is always fresh. I love their selection of dry goods. Stringtown is a must see if you are visiting the area just make sure you dress to the 9s.

This is an Amish grocery store that has things that stores like Walmart dont. My favorite is dehydrated peas, we also go there to buy popcorn kernels in bulk and when we need a certain type of flour like pastry flour. They also have a large candy section and bakery section. They sell milk that they milked and cheese that they made. I try to go there once a month with the kids because it just a cool experience.

Love Stringtown! The candy! The bulk spices! Tons of gluten free supplies also. The hours are M-F 8am-5pm and Sat 8-4pm. Closed Sundays. Also, will occasionally close for Christmas, Good Friday, Easter, probably Christmas Eve too. Sometimes closed unexpectedly for an Amish community wedding or funeral. Also, when produce is in season, you can get peaches, apples, etc by the 1/2 and full bushel.

How can you not love this place! The prices are incredibly cheap! They have everything here like really everything. You can buy fresh meats and cheese, dry goods, soup mixes and my personal favorite.... Huge bags of the Lucky Charms marshmallows! Just the marshmallows! Very freaking awesome!! The staff are super friendly and helpful too, but man those marshmallows!

Stringtown has lots of options for home baking, a variety of snacks and bulk spices at good prices. They also have homemade baked goods (whoopie pies are very popular) and lots of gummies. There is also some cheese and produce in the back refrigerated room. Be sure to bring cash, they dont take cards.

This is really one of the coolest groceries youll ever go to. It is owned by the Amish so they would appreciate respecting there beliefs buy modest dress can not using your cell phone in the store, but the prices are fantastic and you can the real farm fresh experience.

Great for mass general goods. good for bulk dried fruit, flour, cheese, and seasonings. Also they sometimes have great deals on random bulk food items. Also a good place to get oddities such as citric acid, Lye, potassium nitrate, pectin, and others.

When we are in the Kalona area we always stop here and stock up! The bulk prices are so reasonable and if you cant find a grocery item here, you dont need it! I only wish I lived closer as we live in the opposite corner of the state.

Amazing selection + prices! Stringtown would be dangerous if we lived nearby. Stocked up on steel cut oats, various colors of popcorn kernels, pumpernickel (rye) flour, and the classic circus peanuts to gift a relative.

Bring cash (they dont take plastic) and get ready to stock up. I especially love the muffin and biscuit mixes (mix with water), the dried fruits, dried spices, and home made fig-Newton-style cookies.
