So, I drove to the Tiffany location at the Magnificent Mile to buy a wonderful engagement ring for a special someone. I had a decent budget and almost ready to splurge on this first buy. Since this was my first trip to Tiffany, I had high expectations and as I stepped in, those were somewhat shattered. The ambiance was standard to below standard. The jewelry was placed an a fabric that seemed like worn out lining from an ancient curtain (probably 175 yrs old considering Tiffany Co has existed that long). So I said to my girlfriend well maybe its the latest contemporary style so we let that go. Then we were greeted by a salesman - Scott. Another shatter. He seemed to be dressed in a suit from one of the used suit malls. I bet I could have bought him a nice one from Marshalls for few dollars more. Well, then I whispered to my girlfriend, maybe its the Tiffany style. So we let that also go. Then we started looking at some rings I should agree that the workmanship was good but definitely not exemplary. And then I started asking Scott some questions about the diamonds they use, their rating etc. Now both me and my fiance being engineers we are curious about the fine details. On being asked who rates these diamonds, Scott said Tiffany does. Then I asked could you show me the reports, and Scott took us to his dingy little cube in corner and pulled the computer out of sleep. It took extraordinarily long for the computer to come out of sleep. It was an indication that Tiffany did not spend too much thought into the peripheral resources. Then after a few long moments, Scott shows a pdf (lol, a pdf) with everything excellent. I asked if Tiffany provides a photomicrograph and to my utter surprise Scott replied saying only after you buy the diamond. Oh! and what if we dont like what we see, well then you can always buy a diamond twice the price. Then I asked what about the cut clarity and color and Scott said, pointing toward the third line in the pdf - "They are all excellent". Scott, was definitely not the salesman for us. During our conversion, he often said, "If you dont trust Tiffanys, you should not buy here". I was pretty sure that is exactly what we were going to do. I think Tiffany has gotten some air in there heads. They do not seem to understand the competition really well. I think they expect to do business the way they did 175 years ago when their customers probably did not know or have the information. Today with so much information available, I have begun to realize that Tiffany is not worth the prices they command. I would rather go to a Cartier and pay the same price and get wonderful customer service. Tiffanys thinks that their $9000 ring has a diamond that matches that price. But here is my research, I would get the same diamond for $5000 and rated by multiple national agencies. So can Tiffany command such prices. Yes they can but they would have to offer something that other jewelry stores cannot, better customer customer service, exquisite workmanship, better information. They have to change with the market place. The new rich are people with advanced degrees, phds, bachelors degrees, they tend to be more analytic so Tiffany if you cannot satisfy their thirst for knowledge they will not Just Trust Tiffany!!". Then I looked closely at Scotts last name - "Schit-en-hre", then it all started to make sense.

I always dreamed of having a Tiffanys engagement ring, but after visiting this location, I changed my mind. I was 26 and my now husband was 28 when we visited this location, so neither of us were "too young" or "poor" to visit this store, but that is how we were treated. We live in Madison, Wisconsin, so the trip was not too long for us, but definitely not worth it (good thing we had friends in the area to visit...) Upon entering the store, the carpet was dirty and wet (not surprising because of the weather, but soggy carpets are a BIG pet peeve of mine), but we also noticed that we were NEVER greeted. EVER! We looked around at the rings they had on display and never got any help, even while there for a long time. I was pretty upset, they dont know what we were looking for or even our budget! Too bad for them. When we visited the location in Indianapolis, we had a great experience. Help right away and a salesperson who gave us his recommendations right away. I dont know if the workers at the Chicago location think that they are too good for "young couples", but I am sad that is how they treat potential customers. I am disgusted by this location and would NEVER recommend any of our friends here. I am never the type to write negative reviews for companies, but the experience has haunted me forever. I am happily married with a beautiful ring, no thanks to this store!!!! I hope they realize that everyone is important and they change how they treat younger couples.

Unfortunately, my experience has not been very pleasant at this location. I moved to Chicago from South Florida two years ago, and was quite taken back when I walked in requesting my Tiffany necklace to have a quick cleaning and their response being it could only be sent out to be cleaned. I had never heard of such a thing. I go to Florida quite often, and ended up having the Palm Beach Gardens location shine my necklace quickly with absolutely no issues. Last week, I called the Michigan Avenue location inquiring if they carried a particular item...their response was that it was not in stock and they did not offer to assist me further, even after I said "I guess I will have to order it online." I ended up calling the Palm Beach Gardens location who not only had the item in stock, but sent it 2 day shipping free of charge. It is too bad the other employee from the Chicago location had poor customer service and missed out on his commission. While I literally live just a few blocks away from the Tiffany on Michigan Avenue, I believe I will continue to take my business to the Tiffany location in Florida, as they seem to value their customers.

The sales staff seem a little too desperate and the merchandise has become way overpriced. They have no problem throwing around attitude if you counter them with other options youre looking at, the same as they will do at Steinway. Youre paying for the brand and name recognition. But when you wear an earring, nobody can see which shop it came from......so look for quality and price. When Im browsing, I just want to browse. When Im ready to try something or look further, thats when I would signal for a salesperson. But they swoop down on you like a vampire bat, or so it feels like to me. I dont LIKE feeling pressured. An alligator watch strap will cost you $400 there, but if you go down to Wabash, they will have the same item (without the logo on the back) for $90. Still, I have done a lot of business with them. At least the staff are friendly. Dont buy the earrings which do not have the disc clasps. The others will pop off easily and you will end up with a lost earring. Also, the ones with the push backs can be removed too easily during a theft. Demand the discs, or walk.
