This was my first stop on this road trip with my pooch. I was thrilled to find out theres a PETCO (1150 Concord Ave), Concord, CA across from the hotel. On my initial appointment at 9:30am, I showed up about 10 min earlier. I walked thru the door enter the reception area, there as no one there. However, I could clearly hear people talking and laughing but no one wants to come out and serve. So, I proceeded to knock on another groomers glass door, ignored again, then opened it to ask for service as my patiences runs to its minimum. The two discourtesy staff was found hiding under their seats eating and talking. The attitude of that reluctancies to called for their duty was rather annoying. As we began, I realized I had left and forgotten to bring Oscars rabbis certification. My past experience, some groomer such as the PETSMART groomers would call my vet and ask to have the document faxed. With concerned of my dogs grooming experience, I didnt want to push the envelope. Instead, I ask to have the appointment re-scheduled for 4pm on the same day. The groomer said its ok as long as I bring the dog back before 4. As we returned at 3:50, the groomer insisted that he told me before 4 appointment. I told him that why we are here now and it is before 4pm. What is the problem? He said it with a snarlingly and condescending tone, "I told you to bring your dog before 4." Immediately, I realized that he couldnt do it because he must have another appointment. Grudgingly with time already squandered unproductively by morons, I left. At first, I thought who on earth make appointment like this??? Normal people would say, "Oh, I have a 4pm appointment and is booked all the way, would you like a 3:30pm" of the sort. Then, I realized this guy simply lack of basic communication skill which needed to survived; hence, the bitter-sour face he wears. I had 2 days to observe the store since my transportation was in jeopardy at the time. Aside from the Grooming mishaps, I must say Oscar and I enjoyed shopping in the food and supply department. The staff had been professional and helpful especially cashiers. Unlike its counterpart, Grooming department is the evil semitwin at this local. I wondered if their employers allowed such lacks behavior? Do they even realized that they are paying someone to ruin the company image and reputation? Have they even considered the feeling of those who worked hard at the other department?

We are a frequent customer and have never experienced any service as bad as the one in the Walnut Creek location, on California Street. Our impression is the grooming front desk workers do not want to do their jobs. They just sit there, get paid, and do not have to do anything. The managers, at least the available one at that tim, is incompetent. These types of employees are eroding Petco shareholders value. On Sunday morning, Sept 23, 2012, we came in the grooming area behind the glass door, stood there, politely waiting for one of the workers in the front desk to look at us, but none. Finally, we had to get their attention by asking if a nail service is available. A girl looked up with a heavy face and asked for the Rabies certificate. We showed her a signed form from our Vet from another state certified that our dog was vacinated. This same form has been accepted everywhere else, including the major airlines. She said that she did not know if the date is the expiration date or the date the dog was vacinated. I have been in the States for 20 years, but have a light accent. My husband, a native American, thought that she did not understand me. So he came in and explained the form to her. She did not accept it either. We asked for the store manager, hopefully somebody will understand the form. We waited for a long time and finally somebody told us that the store manager is conveniently out for lunch. After another 15 minutes, another manager showed up. He took the vacination form, went to talk to the girl in the grooming area. He came back told us that he was trying to understand. My husband read the form out loud, which clearly stated that the Vet certified that the dog was vacinated on the date, with her name, clinic phone number and other information. The manager did not even bother to read the form, just based on what the girl told him, repeated the girl’s argument. We were surprised how incompetent these employees are. They are unable to understand a simple form. We went to another local grooming store and the certificate was accepted there. The nail was done in an instant without hassle, bad attitude and much cheaper. Petco just lost a loyal customer, and certainly many others if they keep hire these types of employees.

Devastating experience at PetCo, Walnut Creek, CA While picking up my Pekingese today after he had a bath and grooming, the technician informed me that my dog had removed his own nail from the nail bed - she showed me the nail. She told me that he was pawing at the holding cage and pulled out his own nail. What??? All I know is that the pain must have been excruciating to say the least. I cant imagine any dog, and especially my dog with such a timid temperament, pawing at the cage so hard and long enough to pull his own nail out from the nail bed!!! Both of my dogs and cat are rescue, this dog in particular, I adopted from Norcal Rescue. He is very timid, shy, obedient, and very, very sweet -- I cant imagine what he went through today. He has already been through trauma before I adopted him. I will be taking him to his Vet to make sure that his toe doesnt become infected. I will Never bring my pets to PetCo ever again nor will I shop there. Also, I had a negative experience at the PetCo on Concord Ave., Concord, the service was horrible and the manager was talking away with another customer. She wouldnt even give me the time of day, and I had both of my small dogs with me. Never again!

Most staff is friendly and knowledgeable about products but ran into a woman on Sunday who couldn admit their was a problem with the dog wash. After selecting the shampoo I wanted on I turned on the hose then loaded my dog in and waited for water to get warmer. Five minutes in I start but very little soap. I continue try and get a lather going no luck. Leave to get help and this woman tells me that their soap doesnt lather. SERIOUSLY? We go back and forth, I tell her Ive washed my dog at Petco for years and the soap has always lathered. She says look theres bubbles I say great but not enough soap. It goes on I give up and just deal with what I have. Will go back but bringing my own soap.

What 3.7 stars only ? Have you seen other pet stores around ? This is a very clean store, their cages are clean, their tanks are nice and clean as well, the staff is always welcoming, they also remember who you are, very welcoming staff, clean store. So I have nothing bad to say, I switch from ......... to Petco and I can tell you, I felt like I was in the Animal Kingdom, if they take care of their animals and habitat, it tells me a lot about a Pet Store. Sorry I did not want to bad mouth the other store. Not here for that. But Petco now is my favorite pet store, and I recommend it to anyone that will read this !!!!
