This review is specific to 1688 Anderson Rd, McLean, VA. This Safeway was once a well-stocked, well-run store before the Albertsons LLC merger January 2015 and has spiraled downhill since. Now its just an oversized, 24 hour convenience store where you go to pick up basic items. For a brief period in 2015-2016, it had self-checkouts which were a welcome and FAST addition that made trips to the store convenient any time of day. Then, the self-checkouts were removed, with no explanation as to why, and Customers returned to long lines and the tedium of Clerk-Customer checkout line small talk. One clerks explanation as to the removal of the self-checkout was that Safeway upgraded the checkout software, possibly to support credit cards with security chips and the self checkout kiosks apparently didnt support the software... I have no idea if thats true, but I can tell you you that the chip-supporting software is 30%-50% slower during checkout inevitably staring at the wait for clerk prompt on the keypad display. I dont know if management can or cares to turn this place around. ..but I think Ive checked out of there for the last time. Safeway gets the last laugh because two items that I put on checkout belt didnt get didnt get rung up or make it home with me. Fortunately theres two Harris Teeters and two Giant Foods with self checkouts a short distance away that I can pop in and out of. If and when Wegmans comes to Tysons, they will bury you. Maybe you can take your poor customer service and long line experience and open up a DMV there.

There is absolutely nothing positive to say about this particular Safeway. Each and every time we have purchased items such as, we arrived home Ill need to find out they have expired. Little things such as bags of candies like jelly beans and licorice are often stale even though the expiry date has not arrived. The store just doesnt look clean. Their produce department has a lot to live up to. Most times, their produce and fruit look old. I cant tell you how many times weve gone to the checkout only to find out only one cashier is available and so you wait and wait and wait. Not to mention that the last three times we were there the cashier ran out of paper and we couldnt get a receipt. Basically, you cant trust their sell-by dates and you cant trust their expiry dates on anything that they sell in this store. Its buyer beware.

Ever since the self checkouts were removed, this store has become unbearable for me. Long tedious lines on almost every visit. Seems like every customer has a problem trying to check out which makes shopping there just not worth it. I was told that the self checkouts were removed due to increased theft. Not sure if true or not. Other grocery stores in the area dont seem to have problems managing the self checkouts, even the Safeway down by MicroCenter where self checkout is a breeze even when busy. Lucy is great as well as a couple of others but they cannot carry the store by themselves.

Despite the incorrect links to other businesses, this is actually a brand new Safeway - with everything - a drug store, of couse, but also a dry cleaners, sushi bar, and Starbucks, all inside. Great deli, great sandwiches, great fresh to go and ready-made entrees available. This store replaces a much older Safeway and now will pull customers from all over the McLean, Tysons Corner, and Vienna neighborhoods. Best mini-eclairs, ever.

Ah Safeway - theres one near you - its probably not all fancy and decked out like Whole Foods or Wegmans - but it has competitive pricing, good produce. This one is located just right - smack dab in the middle of a condo community [no not underneath it ... or part of the structure] it has a nice size parking lot. The staff are always friendly and helpful The isles are wide, the store is very clean

The store is fine. A wide selection of items. It has a gas station and is open 24 hours which are nice perks. But they removed the self checkout lanes they used to have which males paying a lot slower now, especially when they often only have 2 cashiers at a time. Why they would do that makes no sense to me. Its like going backwards in terms of service

Wonderful new super safeway but understaffed, there are always many closed registers and long lines. it seems that they didnt increase hiring after the store upgraded from tiny safeway to super safeway. The salad bar smells gross, not sure what that smell is. A lot of expired items so you should double check anything you buy.

The store removed the self check out and does not have enough registers open to compensate for the flow of customers. Long lines often. Since the removal of the scanner I havent been able to walk in to buy one or two items without having to wait in a line. Bring back my self check out.

Both stores in this area are terrible .. I would give them less then 1 star if I could .. never staffed at either location enough to handle the customers even at 10:35 at night .. pathetic if u ask me .. lower ur prices if u cant afford the staff .. I waited 15 mins in line

This store smell at the frond end and at the left entry door. Smells like sewage. Called 800 safeway and was assured that it will be taking care of. Return to the store one week after and the smell is worst. If you care about your health, be careful shopping at this store.

Everything fresh and convenient to the area... Also having the gas Station is great... I shopped here since 1982 and I hated when the Old Store was torn down because no nearby place to shop... Have some wonderful staff...

Their deli/hot foods service is horrible. Their attitude is customers are an inconvenience. Since they pre-slice a lot of their deli meats, the deli meat dries out. They do not have a self check out either.

Friendly staff but poor stale bred selection and the "fancy" Cheese area, although having a decent selection, is consistently past expiration date. Ill stick to buying frozen pizza here

Convenient neighborhood store. Only downside is they dont have self-checkout for reasons beyond my understanding, but at least theyve got some of the coolest employees to make up for it

Nice newer store a remodel that makes it better. Deli and wine section plus bakery and all that in between the veggies on the other side of the building. Large store

This store is closed and about to be torn down. Too bad because it was one of the few in the area. It didnt have a meat counter or a seafood counter though.

Good Store. Unfortunately they removed the self checkout. It makes the lines longer. Also not to be a pain, sometimes I dont want to interact with anyone
