I used to work here and I have seen things that would never be tolerated at other hospitals. They do not treat their techs or assistants with respect. July 4th of 2014 they overbooked on feline boarders, knowingly they did not have sufficient room. They charged customers $32 or more a night for their cats to board with them over the weekend. What the customers didnt know was that when the hospital ran out of room, the cats were put in cages in the accounting offices in an upstairs room. Some of these cats were aggressive. The cages were made of fiber glass and smaller than the regular cages used for feline boarding. The boarding kennel for dogs is a very old building. They keep bigger dogs down stairs and smaller dogs upstairs. There have been occasions in which a bigger do was boarded upstairs. This causes problems for techs/assistants because they use a stair case to walk the dogs. A bigger dog can very easily knock an assistant down this stair case and cause serious injury. I ran into someone I used to work with and she informed me that she was threatened with a write up after she was seriously bitten by a dog. Before I quit there were techs and assistants leaving weekly. I was pretty shocked when I heard the this practice hasnt changed much within a year. The doctors and pug rescue do some very amazing things. Everyone there, at the time of my employment, cared for every animal that went through the doors. The issue was with managers and supervisors. There always seemed to be a struggle for a power that ultimately became a distraction. Every time I brought up an issue, such as the boarding kennel not being up to code or safety regulations, my concerns were shoved under the rug and I was told to do my job. The management do not treat their techs or kennel assistants with respect, they treat them like theyre disposable. Boarding felines in small cages in a business office and charging $32+ a night is wrong. Threatening to write someone up after being bitten is wrong. Like I said, the doctors do an amazing job. Pug Rescue of Austin is the most compassionate pet organization in Austin. However, the management here needs a facelift. Until I see a change, I will never bring my pets here.

I honestly cannot speak highly enough of this clinic, its Drs and staff. Ive had the privilege of working with them through the Pug Rescue Austin pugs, and after a year of that, I moved my own dogs over to them, even though were an hour away. I know enough to know that they are the very best, especially with brachycephalic dogs. The vet techs only serve to highlight and enhance the experience there. They too are top notch and extremely knowledgeable. Im sure when they see my name on the schedule, that they plan on extra time due to the plethora of questions I ask, and not once, have I gotten the impression that I was annoying them or challenging them by questioning their diagnosis. I have seen a lot of vets in my years, and fired a few too, but I can truthfully say that when I walk out of there, I feel as though Ive done the best possible for my dogs. I am armed with knowledge and a plan. The Drs have been extremely available for either updates, or further questions as to how any one of my seniors are progressing with what ever ailment they have at the time. I think Dr. Rains is a surgical genius, and am absolutely positive both he and Dr. Volzel saved my Lizzys life when her gal bladder burst. I think Dr Opyt, despite her young appearance, is incredibly knowledgeable and intuitive with her diagnoses, and I love how Dr. Asbury can take a look at a lump or bump and know whether its time to worry, or time to just be aware. Couple these good Drs with a tech such as Signe Corbin (2014 AHA Vet Tech of the Year), and there is not a team anywhere that can beat them. If you want the very best for your dogs, this is the place, bar none.

Ive been driving south to Westlake for several years now. Dr. Angela was recommended to me by a friend with a cornucopia of cats, and my experiences have been uniformly excellent. The doctors are knowledgeable and compassionate, as well as understanding that my budget cannot handle high vet bills. Between mostly diet and observation, we have kept my elderly, energetic cats with high quality of life. The support staff goes out of their way to help, and the one time there was a disconnect in service? It was pointed out to the office manager and a change incorporated into procedures. Also--little things are big things. This clinic is always CLEAN. It looks and smells clean, the boarded animals are healthy and away from noise and confusion, and the dogs and cats are on separate sides of the building, so they are not upset or too excited about the presence of each other. Westlake can sell you Rx diet or give you a script--no drama. And the people at Westlake love animals--not always the case with vets. My cats are my roommates, and Westlake helps me keep them at their best. Its worth my drive from north Austin! I recommend that any pet lover give them a try. Ive lived in Austin long enough to try five other vets, and may all the things I love about Westlake continue!

I would strongly advise anyone and everyone considering taking their pet to Westlake Animal Hosptial to reconsider. I recently took my wonderful black lab to their boarding kennel over the Christmas holidays and that was the worst mistake I have ever made. I picked up my lab the day after Christmas and brought her home only to find out she was covered in dry feces oh her hind quarters and back legs. She is a black lab so I didnt notice upon 1st appearance but when I drove her home, I could barely tolerate the smell. I called that following Monday to complain and their response was "sorry, we should have checked her before she left" ... What? Are you serious? My response was "She should have never been that way in the 1st place so you are basically telling me it is okay if she lays in her crap for 9 days as long as you clean her before she leaves..." They offered my pet a free bath for the inconvenience... WOW... what an insult. I sent have several emails requesting resolution to this matter as well as a BBB complaint and have received no response... they are OBVIOUSLY not very CONCERNED with satisfied clients, only with $$$$... Please avoid their clinic at all costs if you care about your pet at all!!!!

A bad experience... About two or three years ago, I took my dog in because his face had this open cut that would not heal. And I had been to the business before to get his shots taken care of and it was extremely expensive. But the people there were nice and I thought that I had found a good vet for my dog. Long story short, they had misdiagnosed my dog--they said simple cut, and found out just in time that it was actually an abscess tooth that needed to be removed. And then when their credit card machine couldnt read my debit card, they refused to return it to me and called a company that was not my bank. I still cannot recall what happened to my card because I never got it back--I was so infuriated and heard two different stories about either sending my card to this credit card company or cutting it up. I couldnt trust them and called my bank to cancel my card. The experience left me scarred and I regret not reporting them for the way they handled not only my dogs condition but my business. Again, the people there seem sweet, and maybe there has been some good changes in the last few years. But after what I went through, I would suggest you look into other options.
