Automax Hyundai in Norman was a very positive car buying experience. I walked away from 2 other dealers, and have spent the past 3 weeks searching for the right deal at 10+ dealerships... Heres the breakdown: 1. Customer service was great. Initial contact was with Emily Elgin via internet chat and then phone to get ballpark pricing on trade ins etc and to set up an appointment. Emily was informative and very helpful without driving you up the wall like some individuals at other dealerships did. (I typically need an hour or so cooldown period after dealing with anyone at a car dealership, so this is high praise). 2. Upon getting to the dealership, I was promptly assisted by Chad Kennan in tracking down the vehicles I was interested in on the lot, and getting a quick appraisal on my vehicle. I took 2 reasonably extended test drives. Chad was along for the ride and did very well answering any questions I might have on the vehicles without trying to hard sell me, another one of my pet peeves. I also need to add.. I slammed Chads fingers in the trunk of a Veloster which I felt really bad about, but he took it in stride haha.. Quote of the day.. " Nope... Nope Im good, lets do this thing!" lol... 3. Ok.. why does the dealership get a good rating, while all service was very good... In comparison to other dealerships I visited, that actually finding the vehicles I was interested in was rather difficult, and at some points, people didnt even know if they still had the thing on the lot. Getting the vehicles pulled up for test drives was a somewhat long and chaotic procedure. That being said, I dont state this as an indictment of the sales people, rather the managements organization of the vehicles. Chad was moving as quickly as possible to get what I wanted, but the organization of the cars, keys etc made it simply take a long time. 4. Purchasing.. I was happily surprised that I didnt need to argue about my trade in value. I felt that the price given was a fair evaluation of my vehicle so 1 point automax. Pricing on the new car was close to MSRP which was good since I had found similar vehicles priced above MSRP in my area. Negotiations were civil and honestly I felt like we came to an agreement reasonably quickly where all parties walked away happy (I hope? I did at least) By the way.. the classic salesperson brings in the closer didnt apply here, Chad worked with me throughout the negotiations, but I did have a short chat with the internet sales manager. And.. financing, financing options were reasonably competitive. APR was matched according to what I could get from the bank without too much fuss, that being said, I was offered better financing options from other dealerships. (I would say Automax ranked maybe 2 or 3 on best financing options out of 10). 5. The purchase.. Paperwork all in all took maybe an hour, reasonably quick considering. The financing department informed me of all the extended warranties, but didnt hard sell it once I had said no, which I did appreciate. 6. Followup: Upon leaving the dealership in my new car, Chad made sure to let me know that if I had any questions, to feel free to give him a call personally and he would do whatever he could to get things answered. Furthermore, Emily followed up a few days later via phone to see how I was liking the car and to let me know that if I had any trouble with the car, needed questions answered etc to give her a call directly and she would also be able to assist me. Again, just enough contact to be friendly without being overbearing ;) Think that about sums up my purchase experience. Hope this is helpful!

The staff at Automax Hyundai of Norman did a superb job from start to finish. I took the option of utilizing the Internet Department to begin my search, as it made this part of the process much more efficient. Sonja Sherwood was courteous—but also enthusiastic—about helping me. She was prompt in her replies to my emails and was always apologetic whenever she could not get back with me in her usual “near instantaneous” response mode. That is important, since it shows that the customer (and not just the customer’s money, which is also vital) is considered vital to the dealership’s continuing success. So, she did her part in getting me more excited about car shopping and in keeping me up to speed (just in case I had not checked online for new cars showing up at the lot). As I just mentioned, one is able to go online and view the availability of cars in stock. No need to roam the parking lot! If you see what you like, you can then head down and take the car(s) for a test drive and go forward from there. If one is somewhat weary of beginning the car search in a face-to-face manner, I would highly recommend this approach. Walter Tynes, the salesman whom I dealt with, did a great job of introducing me to the car of interest (2012 Accent 4-door GLS). The test drive was easygoing and enjoyable. He didn’t overwhelm me with sales talk, but (and this is a positive) remained in a passenger-role until I had a question. He kept himself from being a distraction while giving me time to get a “feel” for the ride. Another area I was pleased with was, once I informed him that my intent was—at that time—of test driving only, he obliged and gave me his card and the car’s brochure. No pressure. He understands that the position of a prospective customer is most important. Obviously his job is to sell cars but I did not perceive that he was the stereotypical salesman, only telling you what you want to hear and conning you into a bunch of “automotive additions” on top of an already poorly priced car. I was very satisfied with the trade-in value of my previous car (2000 Mazda B3000 SE 4X4). That, in addition to the hassle-free negotiations with Walter & Co., made the experience a surprise. I expected that I needed to wager down the price, but that was not the case. They met my bottom-line and the financing went just as smoothly. I honestly cannot think of any area where I would recommend improvement. The staff at Automax continues to follow-up (not badger) with me. They are about getting one in the right car and making sure the “honeymoon experience” doesn’t merely end once one drives off the lot. Michal Lusk (customer service) has done a great job of keeping up with me to see how the car is performing. They take seriously the opinions of their customers and seek to keep their business. They are proactive in their approach, and that is what an effective CS Department does. In closing, both the car and the staff get the highest grade. Those not mentioned in this review were also just as professional, up-front, and sincere. I would most gladly recommend Automax Hyundai of Norman to any in the position of buying a new/used car.

Automax, you have asked for a review so here it is. Honestly, I had mixed feelings. Walter is a the nicest sales agent I have come across during my 3-to-4-week car hunt. I have come across a fair number of sales agent during that period and I can say he is a rare one. Zack from the sales, Amber from customer survey, they are all very nice persons. But, I am not sure what kind of smoke game is going on behind the closed doors. I will tell you my personal experience. I was shown a number of cars in a couple of visits and one day Walter showed me this Mitsubishi Lancer that just came in. I liked it. We negotiated to a price point that I was willing to pay, and I asked for some work done to fix a few things. We had an agreeable term, I made a $500 deposit and promised to pick up the car when it is ready. One day, Walter called and told me that the car was ready. So, we scheduled a day to get together and close the deal. The day came, I went down to AutoMax but was told that the car was sold to another person who offered a higher price, just a day earlier. Now, what kind of BS is that? They broke a promise! Thats what it is. They broke a promise because they could! Okay, they did not break the legal terms spelled out in the agreement. So, no law was broken but that was not fair to me. Oh, you know what? They even had that car listed on their web site after I left the shop for a few days in a row. Yeah, thanks to the internet. Sitting there baiting another customer? Oh, before I forget, I had an argument with one of the higher-up person after knowing the car I wanted got sold. He wont refund my deposit. I know what do you think. I was on the hook, right? Actually no, I could get a credit card dispute and just ditch them but I thought Walter deserved my business after being so patient and I could see that he was a victim too. Again, I dont know what kind of smoke game is going on behind the closed doors. Nonetheless, I went back the following week and discovered that the exact car reappeared with everything fixed! I was told that the buyer had problems getting his loan approved so the car came back. Huh? What do you guys think? I had chosen to believe Walter and I took the car. He filled up the tank. For the car itself, I think I paid a fair price and I am still quite happy with it. There are minor problems I discovered here and there but hey, it is a used car and I expected this to happen, which actually makes me feel better knowing that these little problems are the reasons the previous owner sold it. It has been a long review but thanks for reading and good luck finding a car. You must need one if you are reading reviews to figure out which car dealer is worth going. AutoMax is worth a trip down there.
