I have a truck that only has 50,000 somthing miles on it. Its in very good shape and only get driven on weekends to a vacation house. Pep Boys has been inspecting this vehicle for at least the last 5 years. I was aware that the right rear tail light has a hair line crack but no light shines through, the crack has been in the lens for at least 5 years and aways passed inspections at Pep Boys year after year. This year "2010" when I drop the truck off for an inspection I told the service agent I would leave the truck and pick it up later. He wanted to know what number I could be reached at if there was anything wrong. About 30 miles later I received a call from Pep Boys, they told me it would not pass inspection and had a cracked tail light. I told them I was aware of a hair line crack but no light came through and it had passed inspections at Pep Boys the last 5 years like that. Pep boys told me the state has been getting tough and they need to follow the letter of the law. I do not doubt that, NYS is looking under every Rock they can find to collect money from those of us who still have jobs. I love my Country but hate my Corrpt Government. I told them I would pick up the truck and get it inspected else where. They reported me to NYS DMV as having failed the inspection. When I arrived to pick up the truck, I looked at the hair line crack on the tail light and it looked like someone had push hard on the crack (hard enough) to make it break and show light through. I cannot proved it but think that Pep boys push on the crack and broke the lens which made it fail inspection. They also came up with a list of other things that the truck needed that were non inspections items. It stuck me as odd because I had just had the truck a few month before into the ford dealer for a repair and the dealer did not find any of the items Pep boys was suggesting I needed fix. I know the dealer goes over things very well, and does not miss an opportunity to repair something. I am suspect of Pep boys and would never use them to inspect my auto again. I would use them for oil changes or for tires but I would veiw with caution any repairs they suggest moving forward.

At least for vehicle inspections anyway. The situation is I took my wifes car in for the annual inspection. I normally dont use Pepboys or any of the chain type repair/inspection shops but I was in a pinch and they could get me right in. Now, I know the car is mechanically sound and it should have been an in and out situation. To give a little background, I am your above average shade-tree mechanic and I keep after our vehicles and know them inside and out. If I really needed I could tear down an engine and rebuild it (Oh the things I learned from my hot-rodding days). The point Im making is simply, Im not clueless when it comes to cars. So when I saw the "mechanics" gather around and start pointing and poking under my wifes car, I could smell it coming a mile away. The counterman came up to me and said there was a problem... surprise, I didnt see that coming or anything. So he goes on to list a part that I have NEVER heard of before "a power steering cooling line" was leaking. And guess how much? Parts and labor, just under $300. All that for a part Ive never even heard of! So I decided to have some fun and ask him to repeat the name of the part. So he did, then I asked... "now Im a little confused, would that be the high pressure line or the return line?" Since any car in the world with power steering only has the two lines. His eyes went wide as he realized right then I wasnt some airhead with a credit card and tried back-pedaling his way out of what he said. I called his bluff and finally what resulted was he did describe to me the part that was leaking and it is in fact a power steering return line, which at Auto-zone or any other car parts store is $15 and about 10 minutes of your time and a couple of wrenches to replace. If you can add oil to a lawnmower, you can change a power-steering line. I left without an inspection sticker, and chanced a ticket, but I could have gotten 10 tickets on the way home, and it still would have been cheaper than what Pep-boys was going to charge me for their made up part. How places like this stay in business Ill never know.

I bought my tires in February and got a front end alignment with them. They also gave me 2 of my old tires back to me. 2 weeks afterwards my front left tire went flat so I went to get the seal fixed and there goes my fea. They also made a big deal about giving it to me for free. Since then, Ive been dealing with my tires incessantly going flat. About a month ago one of my tires blew out on the interstate due to this. I went to replace it with one of my old tires to find that they gave me a tire back that had a nail in it. Since then the seal has only gotten worse and now Im refilling the air on my tires every other day. Obviously Im going to be going to be getting this problem resolved somewhere else. Pretty ridiculous for 700+$ spent on brand new tires that I now only use 3 and am going to have to pay someone else to fix.

Went there to get a simple inspection, needless to say this place tries to get every single last dollar out of you and they actually made me replace a windshield wiper. A WINDSHIELD WIPER!! ONE FOR $14.99 on top of the other $300 they got out of me. Pep boys will never get another dollar out of me and I highly recommend that nobody ever go there for anything ever. Customer service is satisfactory but its all in the way that they train these people telling them to get the most money they possibly can because they knowingly have the upper hand. Please dont message me back saying that you apologize for my experience because your reputation is already tanked, all your reviews are 2.5 stars or lower. Never go here for maintenance only go here for things that you know that YOU need.

I havent felt this ripped off since I was a teen! I was quoted 439.for a cheap set, and 539. with a $50.00 mail in rebate for 80,000 mile warranty. better set. I said I wanted to see the tires when I came in. Chaise showed me two tires, expaining that tire with 65,000 was in fact the better tire. Cheaper and better? I said OK. The bill came out to 650 plus. I was shocked. After he checked my initial quotes he said he could bring the bill down to 539.00 but if he did any more, he would be fired! He asked if I was happy? I so wasnt, but I didnt want to be responsible for him getting fired....Came home and cried and today, noticed that 3 of the four tires are not sitting correctly on the rims. Horrible Horrible experience.
