Ive never been to Portland. Ive never had Portland donuts. My donuts experience originated and developed in NYC so this PDX donut hype is new to me. Knowing they just opened a franchise in Santa Monica, I was excited and eager to give it a try! I had the BBB (Blueberry Bourbon Basil) and my BF had the PCN (Passionfruit Cocoa Nib). We wanted to enjoy ours right away therefore we didnt ask for a box. The donuts were presented to us using a piece of thin wax paper. Thats all. The frosting was still wet, liquidy and smeared everywhere on our hands, fingers and lips. Perhaps too wet AND too sweet... Plus there were no seating area so its difficult to eat them on the spot. The dough was sweet, spongy and fluffy (like a sponge cake). Not bad but I prefer more doughy texture on my "DOUGHnut"... Id come back if the prices are reasonable but theyre not.

I had their blueberry donut and mimosa donut. The blueberry one was my favorite because the flavor reminded me of a cereal. The dough was definitely more cakey than that of a light airy dough from Krispy Kreme, but was absolutely delicious. It was not overly sweet which was really nice. The mimosa is packed with citrus flavor. The cakey dough against the citrus flavor of the icing and pieces of cut up sugared dry citrus fruit complemented each other well. It wasnt my favorite donut, but I still enjoyed every bite. I had a bite of my friends matcha green tea donut and it was delicious. The flavor of green tea didnt overpower my taste buds. It was really subtle. I think I also had something else, but I dont remember the name of it, but it was delicious, so I can only think that all of the donuts here are absolutely wonderful.

WHAT DID I GET: The PB & J donut. HOW WAS IT: It wasnt terrible, but it wasnt amazing. For some reason they put like this spicy pepper flavor (I think it was habanero...I cant remember) into the jam/jelly filling inside the donut, and it just seemed totally unnecessary to me, and in fact made the donut less enjoyable for me because the spiciness was too strong. Its like the bakers were too insecure to just let their jelly-filled donut stand on its own merit, so they tried to make it more fancy by adding peppers to the jelly filling. HOW MUCH WAS IT: $4. WOULD I COME BACK/RECOMMEND THIS PLACE: No and no. There are other donut places that are either just as good or better, and much cheaper and less pretentious. EDIT: Actually, I might come back if they took the peppers out of the PB&J donut.

This might be the most overrated donut in history. 1. Its a decent donut, but for $3.95 it needs to be a great donut. Its not. 2. By donut standards, its a decent size, but its not $3.95. 3. Donuts should never be $48 a dozen, bakers or otherwise. 4. There are definitely some interesting flavors worth trying. To wrap this up... Of all the donuts we eat, the peanut butter and jelly was by far the best, but not $3.95 worth of interesting. In the city of LA there definitely better donuts to be had for less.

Sometimes its hard to separate the hype from substance, but in this case, the hype is pretty real. I just had donut man, declaring them the best donut Ive had (over fancier places like donut friend) but this one takes the cake. And pun intended, it was the blueberry cake that was the best. The glazed is actually comparable to some of the other fancier donut chains but I really really enjoyed the cake donut. Will come back if Im ever in the area!

Blue Star Donuts, a place Ive been looking forward to try for awhile. I was pretty excited when I found out they opened in LA, since it was the place I wanted to try whenever I came back to Portland. I thought it was going to blow my mind, but it turned out to be just okay for me. The donut was average. I wasnt super wowed about it. But dont get me wrong, they werent bad donuts. Try to find street parking!

We knew about this place because of their location in Portland and it was exactly as expected. They had delicious flavors available, my favorites were mimosa and the buttermilk old fashioned! To some, they might see pricey for a donut but they offer unique flavors that cant be ordered many other places, if any. If youre cool spending a few bucks on a tasty donut, this place is for you!

Where to begin. Firstly Im not a donut nut. No pun intended. But my wife wanted a few donuts with her morning coffee. I had passed by here a few times. Went in and the smells just knock me over with delight. Wow. They offer vegan donuts if thats how you roll. They also do large orders if need be. You got to give them a taste and be prepared to want no other donuts ever.

It is crazy to pay $3.50-$4.50 for a donut, but these donuts are worth it. You can instantly tell the quality of these donuts is different than your average donut. My favorite is the lemon poppy seed one, it is amazing! It has a great lemon zest flavor. My favorite thing to do is grab my donut and then go to Intelligentsia for my coffee - heaven!

Definitely hit or miss, and Im still not certain that its worth the price even when its a hit. The passionfruit donut was quite good, with the jam they have on it combined with cayenne pepper made for a surprisingly delicious donut. The other more "exotic" donuts such as the mojito and mimosa ones were decently good, but not great.

Yummy fresh donuts! I visited during the opening week and got to try a donut for free, we tried the Mexican Hot Chocolate which was rich, spiced and divine. The donuts were so fresh and there was a fab selection of flavours. Perfect with a coffee from Intelligentsia or Blue Bottle just across the road.

We went after dinner and they had sold out of their vegan options. Had the bear claw and the raspberry buttermilk donut! The raspberry buttermilk is exactly what the Simpsons donut should taste. Try it! Youll be in dessert heaven. The lady selling the donuts was really nice.

Excellent fancy donuts. That said, flavors change on a cycle so good to check online to see what they have before you visit (if youre picky), and best to come with friends so you can buy a few different flavors and not feel guilty!

Lemon poppyseed buttermilk is the best cake donut Ive ever had. Perfectly textured with golden crunch on the outside and soft, moist inside. Icing adds a sweet and acidic balance. With the Stumptown coffee, it was perfection.

The doughnut I had was mediocre at best..whatever flavor blue star was going for (mimosa) it got lost in all that sugar. In fact the doughnut was almost cloying of the palate, it was so sweet. And the coffee was very mediocre..

Ive been to Blue Star in Portland many times, and was thrilled to see them coming to LA. Awesome donuts, fun ingredients and combinations, and high quality. They are expensive - $3.25 and up, but worth it for a treat!

I highly recommend checking out Blue Star Donuts! They have great flavors. I ordered Blueberry Cake, Mimosa Cake, and Matcha Latte! We ended up going back a second time and I grabbed some donuts to take on my flight.
