Well you will see I posted “love it”, that is not how I would have posted a few days ago. My experience started on 11/1 when I entered the store to look at their bow selection. I decided to purchase a bow and several attachments but was informed I would have to come back to have my bow set up because the bow tech for that shift was out sick. I explained to the manager of the department that coming back was a little inconvenient for me because it was an hour and a half drive one way. He gave me a card to contact him to set up an appointment to be seen so my trip would not be waited. I decided to make the trip the next weekend on kind of short notice but I did call the store ahead of time and let the bow tech know I coming and when I expected to arrive. When I got there the tech was with another customer so I was stuck waiting for quite some time but I attempted to be understanding. I know Im not their only customer but not wanting to wait forever was half the point of calling ahead. The tech set the weight and added my attachments and we headed to the range. Unfortunately, I was unable to draw the bow back. The tech assured me it was at the lowest weight setting and told me of some exercises I could do to get a little stronger. I went home a little disheartened that I could not use the bow I selected. A few days passed and I decided to pull out my bow and try to draw it back and looked at all the various settings and that is when I decided to grab the manual not only was the draw length wrong it was not at the lowest weight setting because it was on the performance setting not on the grow with you setting. Mildly irritated I e-mailed the manager that gave me his card on my first visit. This is where my overwhelming satisfaction comes from. He addressed the issues I brought to his attention, detailed what he would do to correct the situation, and went above what I feel others may have to insure I was a satisfied customer. I made another trip to the store met with the bow tech named John and received wonderful service from him. He apologized profusely for my bow not being serviced correctly the first time and was even a gentleman and carried my bow case to the back of the store to the archery area. He made the corrections to my draw length and weight. He tuned in my sight, whisker biscuit, and switched out my peep sight when he noticed I was struggling with the one I had purchased. The time I spent with him was perfect customer service. Although my experience did not start out well I will always shop at this store and recommend it to everyone who asks. You cannot hold one bad experience against any company; it is what they do once you make them aware of the situation that counts. Others may have just blown me off and not cared that I was unhappy but not them, they did a wonderful job I am literally over the moon happy with everything. I don’t know about the other techs but when I need my bow serviced again I will be calling and asking for John.

One of the newest outdoor stores in El Paso. You can get on their website to see inventory, but Ill hit some of my highlights. Firearms: They have a very large selection of weapons, with far more options than the nearby Academy Sports. The long counter has a pull-a-ticket in the center by the optics, which streamlines the process and allows you to shop instead of camping by the counter. Ammunition: Several aisles are dedicated to ammunition, including case sales. Food prep(?): There is a section dedicated to smoking, outdoor cooking, grilling, and meat processing. Want a sausage stuffer or meat slicer? They have them. Clothing: Reasonable selection of outdoor clothing. Academy has them beat for variety on sports apparel, but then again, thats what academy is for. If youre looking for general hiking apparel, youll be ok. For anything specific, find somewhere like REI. Gander mountain has a large section for hunters, though. They also have some more rugged clothing brands (Carhart and Kühl, for example). They also sell multiple models of Tilley Endurables hats. Camping: Many chair and lounging options. Coolers, to include Yeti. One aisle of hammock options. Several tents, including Kelty. One aisle of freeze dried food. They have sleeping bags, but most of them are for 40°. Youre not going to browse a selection of -20° bags, at least at the time of this review. A smattering of high end with cheap mess kit options, and a small section of backpacking hygiene. Fishing: I dont have any reason to go over there, but the section is one of the largest. They also have a few kayaks, paddles, and flotation devices. Miscellaneous: Animal traps, flashlights, scents, and bait. All in all, there are some things I have gone there for that they dont have. Specialty outdoor stores - which there are none of nearby - are what I need. That being said, this store has left me far more satisfied than Academy, Dicks, or Big 5.

Let me start off by saying, I have been a customer at gander mountain since the grand opening here in El Paso. But, has of today. I will never step foot inside another gander mountain store ever again. I am very particular when I spend my hard earn cash. I am a avid fisherman, fresh and salt water species. When I purchase mid to high end rods and reels, I want to be completely satisfied with my purchase. I only use cash to make my purchases, I never rely on a credit card. I have purchased several rods and reels from gander mountain, g loomis and higher end shimano bait cast reels. I have a total for five combos each costing $900-$1000 per combo. I recently attempted to trade recent rod and reel that I just purchased, as I was not completely satisfied with the merchandise. At check out, I was confronted by the day-shift manager (I do not recall his name). At which point he literally started to interrogate me as to why I wanted to trade the rod and reel for another rod and reel. I politely told him the reason I wanted to trade for another rod and reel and again he ask "why, whats going on here". Mind you the manager tone of voice toward me was hostile and disrespectful. The rod and reel I wanted to trade for was going to cost me an addtional $350 on top of what I already spent. Basically the original rod and reel I had was mid range and I could tell, so I opted to spend more for higher end rod and reel. I have never been treated like this ever. Thus gander mountain will never get another red cent from me ever again.

Twice Ive been there and have left annoyed due to the staff. Gave them another opportunity to earn my business but quickly regretted it. The first time I was there I was looking to buy a glock. I approached the counter for help and was told to get a number. I was okay with that but saw no other customer but myself around and multiple associates behind the counter just socializing. Left and bought somewhere else. The second time I went I was looking to buy a specific optic that Ive been looking for. I saw it on their website so I went in ready to buy. When I told the associate behind the counter what I was looking for he responded with "Never heard of it!" i wish I could express his tone virtually to show why I was quickly annoyed. My gf told me "lets leave this guy doesnt want to help you." Thats how I knew it wasnt just me that got offended. Maybe that guy was just standing behind the wrong counter. Me being in customer service I would have easily handled that situation by telling the customer " Im sorry, Ive never heard of an RMR Optic but Id be happy to look it up on this computer Im standing right next to." I will keep buying my guns and accessories locally and reccomend people in El Paso to do the same. I live next to this store but will happily drive to gun central to enjoy a truly exceptional experience.
