i stopped in the store to use the floor pump, as i had just rode from canandaigua about 70 miles north of ithaca. this is what people do when theyre on a cycle-tour; stop at a bikeshop first thing and fill up their tires. the mechanic there handed me a beat up pump with a broken gage. I explained that i have road bike tires which require at least a semi-precise air pressure and asked if i could use one of the nice pumps sitting next to me to at least gauge the pressure. it turns out the mechanic himself is not allowed to use a working pump. as filled up my tire the thing exploded, destroyed my tire and my rim tape. The poor kid genuinly looked sad, because he couldnt sell me an appropriate tire or rim tape or tube as his boss doesnt or wont stock them. at least he was allowed to recommend another shop for me to go to in the morning. and dont get me started on their selection of northface jackets (theres probably one for every person in ithaca). I have to say, this is probably the most worthless bike shop Ivve ever been to. If it was up to this bike shop no one would actually ride a functioning bike but they would definitely have matching northface outfits, one for every day of the week. Oh yeah, and over priced smart wool crap. the one employee there that was nice to us, is probably underpaid because he looked malnourished, and had sad eyes. hes probably cursed from working at such a crappy shop, and cant get a job anywhere else because no other shop in town will have anything to do with anyone who has ever worked at that place. i actually dont blame them for this decision; this place is actually that bad. please for the love of humanity will another bike shop in ithica please hire this kid, give him food, working tools etc? Hes actually quite nice and would probably do just fine in a real shop.

I am new to Google reviews, but I decided to join just because I was so pleased with my experience at this store. I am a college student in Ithaca and new to biking, and when I first visited the Outdoor Store I wasnt really sure what I was looking for, but one of the younger staff members was eager to help me and gave me really good advice narrowing down the type of bike that would be good for me based on my personal needs. On my second visit to the store I was helped by another staff member, David, who was a very great, friendly guy, knowledgeable and very patient. He gave me great advice and recommendations during my test ride and my final decision to buy the bike (which I LOVE!) And on my final visit I was helped by David as well as another staff member named Joe (or it might be Joey, not sure, but he was great!) He showed me some things about the gears and they both told me how to get adjusted with the bike. Also that day there was a 15% off sale, so I got a nice lock for a good price. Overall, I am very pleased with the service and my new bike. I dont know abut the other reviews, but I never received any rude or snide remarks or attitudes from anyone in the store, they were more than helpful and friendly (and I know, trust me, I have had some bad experiences with customer service.) All-in-all, I hope to be able to come back to the same service for any of my other biking/outdoor needs!

I bought a bike basket at the Outdoor store, but I returned it - within 7 days as they require, with the packaging unopened. The clerk had to call someone to get the return approved - they were reassuring me it was OK. And he kept my credit card slip from the original sale, as well as the original itemized bill. Even though I asked for them back. I wished later that Id demanded them, because they certainly have no right to take the original credit card slip. If something went wrong with the credit card charge you would want the original slip. And perhaps they shouldnt require to keep the original itemized bill, either, or make a copy of it if they want one. Ive never had a merchant do this. It was weird. I think the other reviews describing the owner as kind of screwed up are probably right. They did give me my money back. But the experience suggests that theyd be unpleasant to deal with if theres any kind of dispute. Also the 7-day return policy could cause problems. Maybe it isnt convenient to return within a week, and why should you have to?

I went in to rent bike while visiting Ithaca on vacation. The owner told me to "read the small print on the contract" because I would "hand over my car and house if anything was wrong with the bike when we brought it back." I tried to diffuse the situation by saying theres always a contract and I wouldnt hold him liable etc, but he was so tense and, it made me uncomfortable. I said I wanted to try the bike before I committed, and he said "theyre outside-go on." He didnt help me with it-it was up on a stand. I went out and rode the bike about 15 feet and got off. He then came out and yelled "you cant ride here!" I had no idea and he hadnt told me. At that point I was frustrated with his attitude and I said "I dont know if I will rent this because you are being such a jerk." He grabbed the bike away from me and told me he wouldnt rent it to me. Ive never called a store clerk a jerk before, but this guy is awful. Im glad I didnt rent or buy from his store.

I brought my bike in and asked the guy behind the counter, the owner told me that if I wanted to top off my tires with air from his compressor, it would cost me $5. Rather, he said "I think its $5." Seeing as hes the owner of the store you would think he knows how much he normally charges for...air. He actually tried to charge my girlfriend $8 for nothing but air, a price discrepancy that sounds a lot like hes gouging prices for people he thinks are less experiences. He also told me that there would be a service charge for--you guessed it--putting air in tires. I dont know who this guy thinks he is, but he sure as hell isnt going to get many customers by treating them like he treated me. There are plenty of other outdoor stores and bike shops in Ithaca...I would highly recommend that you seek them out instead.

The owner was the most awful person I have ever met in my life. He watches over his employees and customers at all times through video cameras that are around the store. Not only are there cameras but also microphones so that he can hear all of the conversations going on. He is extremely rude to all customers and it is embarrassing to the employees. The products are overpriced and the only reason he still owns the store is because he doesnt have to pay rent. I understand that his father owned the store before him and he started the business. Well Dan, your father would be embarrassed by the way you have handled the business. Its a shame because there is so much potential for a family run store like that in Ithaca. You cant offer better prices, the least you can offer is better customer service.
