Intrigued by the slogan that greets you: "The best food and wine store between Manhattan and Montreal," (although I found it odd a store would concede its no better than third place), my wife and I decided to have lunch there. The soup, a cream of mushroom, was good. The sandwiches were nothing special- they were not bad, but on par with a sandwich that one could buy at a chain supermarket deli section. Corned beef and pastrami were Boars Head cold-cuts, a fine brand, but one found in any grocery store. They could prepare a brisket in-house, for example, like other upscale food markets, but did not elect to do so. The prices are in line with the area, but not a good value since the quality of the food is no better than any of the delicatessens in downtown Saratoga. Perhaps the unremarkable food quality would have been overlooked if it were not for the staff. Food prep staff, most notably, were rude. For example, it was difficult to know what bread selections there were for the sandwiches. There are many loaves of bread located just over the food prep area, however you cannot choose from those loaves. To pay for the sandwich, you must first walk past the cash register to the deli, order the sandwich, walk back through the store, pay, then walk back through the store to pick up the sandwich. This confusing labyrinth was not clearly explained. We were told that "there is a sign," however. We were treated as though we were going to steal the sandwiches (Id never risk an arrest record for this food). Seating area was crowded and the high tables are chairs are difficult for elderly guests to ascend. I am happy they stock Dr. Browns sodas and Fizzy Lizzy soft drinks. If they want to do this right in the future, they should take a class from Ari at Zingermans in Ann Arbor, Michigan, which is everything this sad, demi-Balduccis, strives to be, but fails to accomplish. We will never return. I hope our readers will do the same.

This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever had happen at a food establishment! The lady handling food and checking people out actually had a customer (who up until this point was doing a great job at keeping the dog away from food service counters) bring her dog to the counter, sniff the counter and the Food Handler petted the animal several times and without washing her hands or cleaning the counter top proceeded to handle my food without it ever occurring to her to wash her hands. I had to request she wash her hands and another sandwich, the deli crew made another sand which and she got it and placed it on the exact same unclean counter. At that point I had seen enough, I paid for my purchase, trashed the sand which and left! This is my last visit to PM, if this disturbing behavior was carried out in the full view of all customers without second thought, I worry about what other Food Code violations are happening behind the scene! Ridiculous!

Putnam Market is two separate experiences, which Ill describe separately. First of all there are the foods prepared in-house. Theres a lunch counter, where you can get sandwiches, soups and salads. The soups are REALLY good. I usually get the special with half a Zalama (sort of like an Italian sub) and one of the 4 or so soup choices; theyve recently expanded with a seating area so you can stay and eat. There are also takeout entrees and sinfully good baked goods. My mother would never allow me to return home to Texas without a couple of Putnams lemon bars. The other business is the packaged gourmet items--chocolates, sauces and the like. This is a great place to buy gourmet gifts including many with a Saratoga connection. Yes, theyre expensive. Putnams for a special treat, not everyday shopping for your mustards and vinegars.

First to note: this is NOT the store for the cheap-minded. If you are, your better off going elsewhere or your appreciation of the food will be diminished by your money saving qualities. That being said, if your an indulgent person, such as myself and expect or seek out different food experiences, this is a commensurable place to visit indeed! My favorite was their cheese display; boasting specialty cheeses that cannot be bought for around 100 miles or so from Saratoga. One of their more popular kinds, the Red Dragon, is by far the most interesting cheese Ive ever tasted. I always recommended to everyone who went far their first time to bypass the sub par deli and go straight to making your own wine tasting event at home---they have all the right ingredients at Putnam!

Great during 3/4 seasons, but avoid for catering or visits on track weekends. Ordered catering with 48 hours notice, and the team forgot to write the full order in their book. Took almost an hour to make up a pinwheel platter, will defiantly go back to PJs BBQ where the co-owner handles catering orders in the summer and always nails it. Long live the track, long live picnics ... just dont cant count on Putnam during crunch time to execute something time sensitive.

Good for catering but sandwiches are average for the price. For example, sandwiches with bacon serve it cold burnt and skimpy. This has a snotty atmosphere, which better serves the subgroup of locals who are anorexic and overdressed than real food hounds. For the best take-out sandwiches in Saratoga year round try Marinos which is off Broadway but one try of their hot subs (in particular) and Putnam will be long forgotten.

DO NOT skip this place. Absolutely INCREDIBLE deserts in the bakery at the store front, but go farther back and there is a great selection of rare items and a fabulous cheese case. The deli has the BEST SANDWICHES I have had in years! They have a website, and I promise the sandwiches are worth the wait on a busy day. Great menu selections with REAL meat and old style deli meats. FANTASTIC PLACE!!!

Putnam has great food, is very willing to work with you on orders (I use them for catering all the time where I work). The food is always fresh, delivery is always early or right on time, and the only time anything was messed up with our order, Putnam fixed the problem and/or compensated on our next order. Great local business... awesome food.

Horrible customer service. They made me wait 45 minutes for half of a sandwich which was $7. The worst part was I found out it had been on the counter for at least a 5mins and no one let me know it was done. If you have time to wasy, money blow, and you dont mind being made to feel like an inconvenience. You should definitely stop by.

We went in the Putnam Market to buy some really good cheese. They have a separate cheese room with an extremely nice and knowledgeable man named Calvin that works in there. His personality radiated and his knowledge of the different cheeses were exceptional. We sampled different cheeses as he told us about them. Well be back!!

I remember going here about 5 years ago when I was 15 or so. I remember having a sandwich called "gunpowder" or something like that and have thought about it for years, but cant remember what is on it! If someone could give me more information about this, I would appreciate it! THIS PLACE IS AMAZING!

Food is very good with alot of originality. Only gripe is how busy they are vs how much help they have during those busy hours. If you are in a rush maybe find somewhere else to eat. Sandwiches have taken upwards of 20-30 minutes to make.
