I have used Tropical Hardware almost exclusively for over a year. I loved it. However, my last visit has soured me completely on the place, and I will be returning my recent purchase for a refund. I went in with a small project, looking for their expertise. Michael stepped up to the plate. Hes a really smart, very knowledgeable young man, and has problem solving skills far beyond his years. We started working on selecting fittings and parts for my project. Just as we were working on the last bit, he was summoned away. He had spent about 15 minutes with me. Seconds later, and older gentleman walked up and asked if I needed anything else. I said, "well, yes, but Michael was helping me." He says "Hes spent too much time with you. Do you need anything else?" I attempted to explain the last bit I needed, and he says, "you cant do that, youll need to do something else. Will that be all?" I was getting the bums rush out of the place. He took my purchases up to the counter and waited for me. The total rang up to about $30. Not a bad haul for 15 minutes of their time -- and I didnt even get everything I needed. I told the gentleman I hoped I didnt get Michael in trouble. He says, "thats the one thing he hasnt learned yet". I said, "hes very smart. And, hes a good kid". He made no reply, except to give me my total. I am heart broken. I love patronizing small locally owned businesses. I thought I had found a little piece of lost Americana in Tropical Hardware. Sadly, I was wrong. Service above and beyond the call is still as dead as I thought it was. I have personally spent well over $1000 in Tropical Hardware over the past year -- not including my last purchase. Save yourself the heartache and disappointment. The illusion of a small town, family owned, helpful establishment is just that -- an illusion. Its simply not worth the extra expense to not be treated like youre the most important part of their business. Go to Home Depot or Lowes, at least they wont toss you out because youve been there for 15 minutes problem solving your project.

Tropical Hardware is a terrific hardware store with exceptional customer service. The owners and staff are extremely knowledgable and always go out of their way to assist me and make sure I get the right tools for whatever project is on my list. They generously share tips on how to complete a project, too! I shop here for everything from tools, lumber, and pvc pipe to school project supplies. If they dont have what I need, they order it for me. They also have a good selection of pocket- knives. Tropical Hardware is a great shopping experience, and an excellent reason to stay out of the big-box stores!

This store has been my "go-to" place for the last 2 + years. For a small store, it is well stocked, and they will order things for you if you can wait. It doesnt pay to go to the "big box" stores when they are just around the corner.....and the Home Depots of the world are not always cheaper.... I have found many items of the same or BETTER quality at Tropical at a lower price. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, capable, and helpful. This is a great family owned and run local business.

Whatever your level of skill, the staff can point you in the right direction. Their amount of knowledge and the liberal rate at which it is dispensed is priceless. Theyve even stocked things that I did not think a non-big-box store would (specialty items like concrete stain, power tools and lawnmowers). Prices are comparable and sometimes lower than at the national chains. Hard to beat!

You cant find that little screw, you need some advice on how to put something together, you need a piece of plastic cut to size for your table?? Tropical hardware has it and they also have the best service ever. And if they dont have it or cant do it they will give advice where to go. And they are pleasant and friendly and it doesnt get much better than that. Margo

Everyone that works there is knowledgeable and friendly; they are wonderful! I have been going there since 96. I often am sent there by my husband, usually with a poor description of what he needs, and they always know what Im talking about. I recommend Tropical to anyone who talks about going to the big store over the bridge.

I have been going to tropical hardware for a long time. I always felt it was worth paying a little more due to the great personal service you get. It feels like the new owners are moving in a different direction. Its to bad because without that I will be making the trip to home Depot more often.
