Ridiculously disrespectful staff! I ventured onto Main St (as one does when in HB) for the first time in June while I was here from Boston looking for a home. My husband and I were walking down the street and I was looking for a new t shirt because it was a lot hotter than I had anticipated. I saw the Gloss boutique and was stoked! Until I got closer... there was a male and female standing outside of the boutique critiquing people as they were walking by! The worst part... they were the employees. All I could think about was how much business they must lose (regardless of how successful the boutique might be) by doing things like this. Needless to say, I didnt purchase anything from there that day. I also didnt write a review right away because Ive worked in retail and I know what its like to have a bad day, so I thought maybe, just maybe, these two hadnt eaten their Wheaties that morning. However, since Ive been living here, Ive heard this one employee (the male) say terrible things about customers (when Ive been in the store) and people around him two other times, so now Im convinced hes just an awful human being whos mad at the world for whatever reason and this review is definitely warranted. Hes always working too... so Im wondering if he isnt some type of "manager" and I would use that term lightly since no one should be acting like this, especially someone in a leadership position. Either way he should take a good look at how hes portraying himself to the world and maybe change a few things. Now youre wondering why I gave the store 2 stars? Well, the store is super cute. Theres some cool art on the walls and I like how they repurposed materials like books etc to make displays. Its an idea that Urban Outfitters has been using for a long time, but its still nicely put together. Whoever designed it did a great job. Cute accessories. Shoes... ehh. Clothes... ehh. Theres also one decent employee who Ive come into contact with while shopping (yes, I have actually purchased something from here). Although no employee will REALLY talk to you unless you start taking everything off the racks... which again, the clothes are sub par so why would you really want to spend a bunch of money there when you could walk down the street and get similar quality from Forever 21 at a cheaper price? Im sure the store kills it though since its in a prime spot with a ton of tourists. It would do that much better if they chose nicer people to represent the boutique. Heres some advice: Get off your high horse. Smile. Be nice. Stop judging other people you dont even know. You might learn that someone your making fun of actually has a lot more influential power than you expected. Or at least you wouldnt go down in Yelp history as the guy who stands outside of a beach boutique making fun of people because he has nothing better to do.

Living down the street from Gloss, my roommates and I go there frequently especially since they get new shipments every Weds. I always have had good experiences with the staff who are trained to help you put together a full outfit and offer the 21+ customers champagne. Coming from a customer service management background, I really appreciated the clear focus on optimizing the customer experience. Although my overall opinion of Gloss is still high, I did have an encounter recently that brought down the standard of customer service I thought Gloss and their managers upheld. I ran into Gloss on St. Patricks Day to grab some green pants. In a hurry and unsure if I would actually wear the pants, I asked an employee three separate times what the return policy was and she assured me that I could get CASH BACK within 10 days of purchase (w/tags and receipt). Of course, in looking at the receipt today - it says "exchange or store credit only". I called the store thinking a manager could easily offer a solution and would also be appreciative to know that an employee was misinformed so that this didnt happen again. Instead, I was told repeatedly that the print on the receipt was the store policy and that her employees were "all very well trained on store policies". So apparently the fact that one of the employees is obviously not well trained on the policy isnt true? Last time I checked, denial wasnt on the list of customer service strategies. Although I was pretty shocked that the response I was receiving was angry (whereas I thought I should have been the angry one), I calmly pointed out that, if the employee states a policy that is different from what is on the receipt.... once the customer sees whats on the receipt, its too late - the items have been purchased. Even if there is something written at the checkout stand (which Im not sure there is), that shouldnt allow an employee to fabricate whatever policy they want. My three roommates who shop there weekly were also pretty shocked to hear that I was not offered a solution and instead was essentially told that I was lying. I think well be sticking to Model Citizen down the street.

I had a great experience in the Gloss Boutique! Stephanie and Sarah were so friendly and helpful and I ended up buying more than I intended, but I walked away with two GREAT pair of pants! Would definitely go there again on my next trip to OC!
