This was a charming little bookstore and as someone who worked for over 10 years at an independent bookstore I appreciate a good one. Whenever the opportunity presents itself I try to stop in and buy a book from this kind of local bookseller. So why did I give them a fairly low score? I was disappointed by how I was treated by the staff. I had just bought a cup of hot coffee and I was looking forward to looking over the books at my leisure, I didnt need anything specific I was just looking for something to buy. However, shortly after entering the store I was asked to set my coffee down on the counter and not carry it around with me in the store. I was insulted by this as I am not a child, I am an adult who not only can be responsible for my beverage but also knows that if I do spill it on a book or books its my responsibility and I will pay for the damage. I believe that coffee and books go together, almost as much as tea and books, and as I said before I previously worked in a bookstore and we didnt require people to put down their drinks. In fact we provided free coffee! (Though I have to admit it wasnt the best) Take this for what its worth to you, but I dont appreciate being treated this way. Needless to say on this RARE occasion I did not buy a book as I didnt want to stay in the store and let my coffee get cold.

River House Books is, sadly, one of only a handful of neighborhood bookstores left on the Monterey Peninsula, down from dozens a few decades ago. We understand our stewardship responsibilities to keep these last few here...we must shop there. River House Books is a newer store, by neighborhood bookstore standards that is, it does not have 40+ years of lovingly worn woodwork from the same neighbors hands smoothed to worry-free as theyve wandered the stacks or sat and read for hours rubbing the same spots. This bookstore embodies all the distinction and class of an East Coast counterpart and the casual sophistication of an elegant West Coast gallery or boutique. They know what they are doing at River Books with all the savoir faire of a distinguished ambassador, and the welcoming kindness of a neighbor who honors and respects both the book and the patron. I have always found what I needed, needed what I found; and ordered through that wonderful database of theirs,(like a treasure hunt each time we searched), for what was not readily available on the floor, and always got my books in the end. Thank you River House Books!

I am an academic librarian who lives on the east coast and when I visit my sister in Carmel, it is always a pleasure to visit River House Books (where do librarians go on their time off, to bookstores!!) The staff is so friendly and helpful in person and when I have called to give a gift certificate from across the country, they are just as helpful and nice then, too!

When I complained about the unpleasant salesperson, the owner did not care!
