Petaluma, and indeed, Sonoma County, have few farms operating in such a way that you can go to them and purchase food directly from farmers. Every year, the county publishes the Farm Trails guide, and the paucity of actual year-round farm-to-table establishments is really evident when you read through the booklet. Because the majority of our former farmlands has been given up to the production of alcohol, this is no surprise, but it is really important to notice and makes those farms that have it together enough to run small farm stores even more valuable in Sonoma County. Green String Farm operates year-round and if youve not shopped there before, definitely give them a try. Youll find a little cabin surrounded by outdoor awnings under which the tables are laden with the farms produce. Green String is not an organic farm. After talking to the employees and reading their literature, I have come to understand that while their practices are, in fact, organic, they have decided not to go through the difficult process of getting organic certification from the USDA. Their crops are grown without chemicals and, like good organic farmers, their chief concern is with feeding their soil to create a healthy, balanced environment on their farms. The quality of their actual produce is really varied. Weve had great strawberries, so-so tomatoes and bug-ridden artichokes from Green String. Overall, the quality of their produce does not match that of what you will find between June-Oct at neighboring Andersons Organics, out on Bodega Hwy. However, Andersons closes after Haloween, and locals are extremely glad that Green String is still open for the other months of the year. Their crops are fairly diverse, but like many Sonoma County farms, they seem to grow too many heirloom tomatoes, while there are only small amounts of other crops that are staples. Wed love to see Green String get serious about staples like dried beans, flour corn, etc. They have the land to do it and the owner is locally famous as a pioneer in creative farming. Even with the sometimes uneven quality of the produce at Green String, it is always going to be better and fresher than what you will find at the local Whole Foods and you will know that your money is going to support local farmers - not multinational corporations or organic mega-monocroppers. All the customers seem so thrilled to be shopping at Green String and we highly prize the vital part they are playing in the local eating scene in Sonoma County.

I cannot say enough good things about GSF. I am so annoyed with the quality and freshness of grocery store produce-including Hole Foods (not a typo). At Green String you can buy only whats locally grown, and its always fresh-sometimes its not the most tender (my only small complaint). On Saturdays and Sundays, a local baker delivers the best bread I have ever tasted not from my own oven. The baker obviously cares about the product as do the owners and employees of GSF. The produce prices are fair but somewhat enigmatic. For example, recently string beans were $6/lb and peaches were $1.5/lb. The prices are fair, and there are a few items that excel: the baby broccoli-its more like broccolini- was recently $2/lb and no huge stalks that are committed to the compost. They have pardron peppers-hard to find elsewhere that, grilled with EVOO and garlic, transport me to a tapas bar in Madrid. They also sell frozen beef, organic cheeses, WW flour, honey, vinegar, canned items, farm fresh eggs (at 60 cents each), flowers and herbs. Last but just as important, the people there are friendly and helpful. Its a treat to shop there.

HIlla is who gave us a brief tour on this farm.. You can find her by the jade egg hanging from her necklace. She is such a great resource for all things chicken or egg... She put a chicken to sleep in her arms right in front of us! I mean the chicken was totally out and relaxed. We got to pet the chicken; they were silk chickens: the ones that look like small cats. I heard a rumor about the garden that we could pick our own vegetables, but that only happens in the fall when there are more tomatoes than one knows what to do with. Anyway, GO THERE and see whats in season: they have great stuff! <3

The homemade "Grass Fed Beef" sign drew me in and I was immediately impressed. Nothing is quite as welcoming as being met by a labrador for a game of ball as you pull in the drive. This place is the real deal for organic and sustainably grown foods, from seasonal produce, to cheese, fresh eggs and glorious, glorious meat! The staff was warm and helpful and the prices super reasonable. I will be back!
