The doctors and staff are friendly, courteous and professional. We have been going here for 8 years, BUT, are now going to go elsewhere. The reason is their multi-level pricing for exams. Their quoted price for a full exam with refraction is $100. This seems to be the going price in Hanover after calling four other offices in Hanover and inquiring of their prices for exams, all between $90 and $100. Here is the problem, we have vision insurance which will pay 20% of the exam price plus gives a $40 allowance towards the exam. My thinking is 20% of $100 is $20 plus the $40 allowance for a total of $60 off the $100 exam bill. Not so! The bill for the exam IF you have insurance is $140 for exam plus another $30 for refraction totaling $170. No other office called (nor this office if you have no insurance) charges extra for a refraction, all is included in exam. Then $60 is deducted for a total owed of $100. OK, I know the end result is still $100 owed by me, but the office is getting $100 from me and billing $70 to my insurance company. Call them and ask what the exam costs without insurance and call at a different time and ask for the same exam price using vision insurance. Two different prices. We have inquired at several other Hanover offices that charge the $100 for the total exam, then deduct the amount our insurance allows, in our case $60 for total owed of $40. After figuring this out we took our business elsewhere to place our $750 frame/lenses order.

I was very happy with the doctor until i moved to MD and visit another doctor who told me i had Pterygium on both of my eyes. I knew i had something and told Dr. Hemler because it was visible in the mirror. This was the reason i could never wear contacts and my eyes being red and dry at all times. I went back to him so many times and showed him and he said the only thing i could do is wear sunglasses to prevent. I went back again because i could not wear contacts and he said i needed plugs.. As soon as i went to my other doctor in Rockville MD, he told me i needed surgery and gave me a whole explanation of what it was and how he would not give me contacts because i cannot wear them with this stuff on my eyes. I had better insurance back then where i only had a copay of $20 and now i have to pay 600 deductible. Thanks to doctor Hemler.

Thorough, friendly, and professional. Helmler is family friendly eye center who takes the time to get your prescription right, but also takes the time to evaluate and support your overall eye health. I have never been to a more thorough eye center. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted with a smile, making me feel welcome. Dr. Hemler took his time to fully evaluate my vision and my eye health, answering my questions, and providing me with an accurate prescription that dramatically improves my vision. What a difference when compared to chains and lesser skilled offices. I wouldnt go anywhere else...and as an occupational therapist who works with kids with low vision, I wont recommend anyone else in the area. They are simply the best.

Beware!! You can NOT trust the sales staff at Hemler. The staff only care about getting rid of inventory, not what is best for YOU. One staff member "helped" my daughter (teenager) choose the right frames for her face stating that some were too big and others too small. The pair they recommended are WAY to big for her face, unfortunately I trusted them. In an hour of getting them I knew something was wrong. They constantly fall off her face, and the ends of ear pieces touch below her ear lobes. Its been a month and they have been cut 3X already and are still too big. Glasses arent cheap, and they are really good at pretending to care when youre shopping. Once the glasses are in your hands, they could care less. Horrible business practice!

Hemler Family Eye Care is a fantastic place for getting your eyes examined and knowing that you are in good hands. The staff is very friendly and always help you in any way that they can. They always have a smile on their face and you never feel rushed or ignored. The doctors are also great. They take time with you to not only examine your eyes but to explain any questions that you might have. For anyone who might not like dealing with insurance, no need to worry; the staff does it for you. They explain everything to you and have your best interest at heart.

I have been a patient of Dr. Hemler for a little over 2 years. My previous optometrist was not able to fix the problems I was having with my vision. Turns out I have Keratoconus. After some research online I find an optometrist, Dr. Hemler, who fits special contact lenses for Keratoconus. Another plus his office was only minutes away. After almost a year of my previous OD trying to fix my vision Dr. Hemler had me seeing 20/20 as soon as my new Scleral contacts came in! Dr. Hemler and his staff are great and always greet you with a hello and smile!

I would highly recommend their services to anyone who is looking for eye care. ps. I LOVE my new prescription sunglasses. Now I can actually read my GPS watch, while Im out on a run. Office staff is always professional, competent and friendly. Pricing on lenses, frames, contacts & exams is also very reasonable. Top notch - very highly recommend!
