response to owner on 2/17/2017: First, I believe you are being genuine, however I do not believe that the id check was based on security protection because i have used my card there a number of times and no one asked me for ID. Secondly, I do not believe the owner was there, because there were only two females at the front of the store and I know that the owner is a male. Third, if you read the comment I posted, I wrote how polite you guys USED TO BE BUT IN THE LAST MONTH AND A HALF was what my comment referenced. As you can tell, I am the only comment posted in the last four months. Im sorry but I still do not feel welcome at your establishment. P&M used to be very courteous and friendly to its customers, not to mention seemingly sanitary. In the past month and a half, Ive noticed this staff, particularly the cashiers were being extremely rude. On one occasion I had placed an order for a ham and cheese sub. I noticed when the girl handed it to me, it felt like the weight was lighter than usual. I was in a hurry so I had to eat while driving. When I opened it up, there was one slice of ham and one slice cheese. The girl essentially handed me a loaf of bread with nothing in it. Then, a few weeks later as I was checking out, an older gentleman, placed my order in the plastic bag and when I got home (two blocks from P&M on Orange St.) I realized that there was a piece of gum that he had been chewing inside the bottom of the bag, along with the food I had just purchased. The most recent incident that put me over the edge in deciding that I will no longer buy anything there, was when my girlfriend went to check out using her credit card, and her credit card was cracked. The girl at the register, was scrutinizing her for this, and for no reason, seemed to ask her for ID because of the condition of the card. I understand the need for ID but it seemed that she asked for it simply because of the cards condition, if not for other reasons. Then, as my girlfriend was about to show ID, the cashier didnt even bother to look at it. When my girlfriend came out, she mentioned to me what happened, telling me that the old lady with glasses was extremely rude. I said maybe you just took it that way. She said that was not the case; the old lady with the glasses actually accused my girlfriend of fraud by asking her "did you steal this." (My girlfriends average income is in the lower range of six figures annually, although she is someone who you would never expect to be in that tax bracket, as she often dresses modestly). I thought this was exaggerated so I attempted to go in and buy a drink, just to see how they would treat me. As I attempted to enter the store, the door was locked, as I thought they needed to dry the floor due to it being slippery before they allowed in any more patrons. There was a sign I did not see and a girl pointed to the barely legible sign on the door, and said to me with an obvious attitude of resentment, "you dont see the sign" under her breath muttering "f---ing idiot" -- I have been living in New Haven for decades as many of my family members and close friends have as well. These people just bought this store as I knew the previous owners (brothers Louie and Jimmy) who just recently sold the business. They (Louie and Jimmy) never treated customers this way, nor did their employees, as they would have been fired for doing so. It seems like half of the people who work there are just truly trashy, rude and incompetent people. I WILL NEVER BUY ANYTHING FROM HERE AGAIN. Not only is this place unsanitary, but it is also employing staff that are extremely rude to some, if not all patrons who shop there. They should move to a place in New haven where this type of service is common, theyll fit right in.

I mean dont get me wrong P&M is a good store, but just because there are surrounded Yale students, it doesnt give the employer/associate a chance to pick and choose who to be nice to. I mean the servers, the cooks, the people walking around the store consolidating, organizing, putting things away, are grate and helpful to The customer. Theres this one elderly lady with glasses, that chooses to be nice when she wants to, that is not a good look for P&M and for there customer service. Me being, Womens Polo Specialist, just reminds me of how people with some power could try or think they could belittle people when their day is not going to good, to look good in front of other customers.

P&Ms is the best of the three local delis. They carry the most reasonable and diverse selection for groceries, the deli is good and the meats sections has some excellent pre-prepared dinners (all tyou have to do is cook it). Also, the customer service is great, everyone is very helpful and they stay open till 7!

I absolutely love this little place! They have great soups, their sandwiches are only $5 on their soft rolls (my favorite is the Chicken Flag - chicken cutlet, fresh mozzarella, tomato and basil) and have great little sweets and desserts. Great prices and good products. Employees are always friendly and helpful.

Saying 4 but, only because One of the sandwiches we ordered was amazing and the other sadly lacking in basil. But, Im inclined to say 3 because so.muxh else looked great. Impressed by the look of the butcher shop. Really great looking boneless pork chops for short money!

I go to P&M at least once a day, sometimes twice! The staff is friendly, the breakfast sandwiches are huge and reasonably priced, different lunch specials every day! They also have ample outdoor seating for nice days. I cant recommend this place enough.

Delicious sandwiches. I recommend the Vesuvio and the Latino. I also recommend signing up for Spots on the tablet at the register. You earn one for every visit and they can be redeemed for coffee, salad, sandwiches, desserts, fruit, discounts, etc.

Awful customer service. Those girls who are working as cashiers dont know their prices in the store. Many products are without a price. When you are already over-priced, you should at least have good customer service...

I go all the time for sandwiches, salads, and groceries. My experiences have all been very good. I especially like the Cobb salad - it is absolutely massive (even the smaller size).

Walked in at 7:58 pm. The guys at the sandwich counter ignored me for two minutes then denied me service cause they close at 8. Rude, lazy. Dont go here.

Best food around, Italian style market. Hot prepared food, sandwiches, salads. Deli, full service butcher, great coffee. All around a gem in East Rock.
