I miss the old Last Word, first and foremost. I think the new location is in a terrible area, probably to save on rent. I noticed a lot of the old businesses in that cluster where the Last Word was are also closing or relocating. Its such a pain in the ass to get to this place too with all the construction. If you are coming from University, you have to find a way to make a U-turn, go alllll the way back down N. Tryon just to get here, and then when you do your car is met with deep potholes. Everytime I go, the place is deserted and depressing looking. The workers look like they dont want to be there and they arent prone to asking if I need any help. Its likely that the Uhauls they are renting out is the only thing keeping Last Word afloat now. The books are reasonably priced. I was able to grab a few old paperbacks for less than 5 bucks total. The electronics is where the inflation is. Their used consoles are super overpriced compared to Save Point Video Games, which is the flagship gaming store in the same area. Theres absolutely no selection of used newer generation games because the buyback prices are bad and nobody wants to bite on it. To make a long story short, there are other used media stores in Charlotte that are much better in terms of customer service, prices (buybacks included) and atmosphere.

This was a great find that wasnt on my list of retro game shops. From the outside it doesnt look like much however once you get into the place its a virtual playland of used media. The Last Word has a huge area just for books, about half of the space, which is in the back half. The front is reserved for movies (dvd, blu ray) and retro consoles and games. Theres also a big lounge like area in the front of the store. I heard some talk while I was there that they were going to be setting up an in house coffee shop there. The middle of the store full of music. CDs in the front facing section and vinyl behind that. This was my last stop in the retro tour of Charlotte and this place delivered as well. I picked up a complete Sega Dreamcast system here for $35. You can bet at those prices they wont last long. Unfortunately there were no Dreamcast games during this visit, but thats no problem and Ill hit up another store while Im in the area. In addition to that I picked up a couple of used CDs for the car. Both were about $4 each. Cases were in perfect condition as well as the booklet and CDs. Definitely a fantastic random find. This is another place Ill be revisiting on future Charlotte trips.

This bookstore is great if your purchasing some books because the prices are really cheap, but if your selling your stuff its a waste of time. I have tried selling a lot of books in the past couple of weeks because I am moving. They are really particular about the books they buy and when they give you cash or even store credit it is nowhere near what you paid for, even for used books. I sold a textbook that was used when I bought it for $80, and they gave me $17 for it and three other books. If I didnt need the cash I would have sold it on ebay or amazon or even gave it to someone who needed it at school. Instead I was paid for all four books less than the price I paid for one of them. So while it is a great place to find reasonable books, I would advise trying to sell online if you have the time, especially if they are textbooks that college students need.

Ive loved The Last Word since it opened, and the new location is no different! Its a little awkward to get to, but the selection and deals inside is worth it! Between the great deal on Groupon, coupons, and some store credit from selling books before I moved, I only spent a total of ~$45 (the cost of the Groupon + a little extra) for a wireless xbox one controller, Destiny for xbox one, and 8 beautiful cookbooks (mostly hardcover). For $45! Insane. The whole staff is very friendly, passionate, and knowledgeable about what they do, and theyre very willing to chat about their plans for the new building and for the store... I cant wait to see it completely done! Get to the new location fast... it wont stay such a well-kept secret for long.

The new location is simply pathetic. The building looks unsafe, the parking lot is damaged and muddy, they didnt even bother to take down the old hardware signs. We went into the store today after it opened yesterday and wondered...what was going on while the store was closed? A majority of the store was still in boxes. Not professional at all. A bad location now with all the light rail construction, makes it impossible to get to if you are driving from the university, concord area. Very disappointed. If yo werent ready to sell, why open at all. Fix the parking lot and the building itself...looks very unsafe and not inviting. Bad choice, bad move... Will take a lot to bring my family back.

My #1 go to bookstore right now in the Charlotte area. Very clean, organized, and large variety of books, electronics and audio and video. They have great options for buying, selling or trading. And nice incentives for loyalty. They also involve the community with regular events for kids, adults, families, and even specific events for homeschoolers. I go there for the homeschool books. On Fridays homeschool teachers get 10%off! Staff are extremely helpful and welcoming. Only downside is, if its your first time, the store can be hard to miss. But slow down or take the second entrance. They are also a Uhual dealer, so it is actually easier to spot the Uhual sign.

I love this store but last week I went here, I learned how theres some kind of bias. A woman said it was her second day working there and usually when I ask for applications, they say "were not currently hiring... " that struck me as odd and that really hurt. I need to leave this city and preferably make money in one of my favorite stores but thats impossible when you get denied and the pretty person gets something over you. Now I love the game and other goods but that has affected my shopping here. Ironically I even told one of the cashiers here how I only buy from places where I dont get insulted and treated like Im second class a month ago.

One of my favorite places in Charlotte and I recommend it as much as I can! An awesome selection of books thats always rotating. Too many times I tell myself Ill grab a certain book next time Im in and its always sold! The prices are killer and the staff is always friendly and helpful! They can make great recommendations if youre stuck and just wanting to find something new. AND if you have an account with them, you get coupons after you spend a certain amount (I think its $10 for every $100?). Cant wait to check out the new place!

I took my three young children to The Last Word to explore one Saturday. They have a huge selection of childrens books and a reading/play area for kids complete with a puppet show stage area. The kids found several treasures and started reading. Since they were occupied I was able to brouse the adult book section while keeping an eye on the kids. Wide selection of books, music, video games, and cozy reading areas. The staff was helpful, knowledgable and treated us like family. Cant wait to go back!
