Im a Machinists Mate 2nd class in the US Navy about to finish out my 6-year contract with an honorable discharge, on terminal leave in CT. I went into Marandinos today to buy a 12-pack and some food for a get together Im planning to have for myself and a couple of friends. The clerk asked to see my identification, which is perfectly reasonable since apparently they ran into trouble with false IDs recently, and were shut down for a period because of it. What I found to be perfectly UNreasonable was the fact that on the hierarchy of personal identification, a US active duty military ID is less than worthless. They asked if I had a drivers license instead, and I said of course, but I looked nothing like the picture because - shock - I joined the military to spend my golden years serving my country. And have since had a radical change in my hairdo. I showed it to them anyway, and they brought their manager out to get his opinion. He said they couldnt accept it as a valid form of ID, but that they also couldnt accept my military ID (Which has my birthday, social, updated photo, AND says Im protected under the Geneva Convention.), but the only reason for that which they gave me was "We usually use drivers licenses." I understand that in the Avon/Simsbury/Canton area of Connecticut, there isnt much of a military presence. But its absolutely ludicrous that an active duty military identification could be considered lower on the food chain than a piece of laminated plastic that allows me to drive a car. They wouldnt even look at it. And whenever I tried to explain this to them, they just said over and over, like I was a learning-disabled child, that I didnt look like my 7 year old drivers license (Which is NOT expired), and that my signature looked nothing like it did 7 years ago. Another side effect of military service. Marandinos has henceforth lost my business, and hopefully anyone else in the area who has a shred of respect for the men and women who sacrifice their youth putting their lives on the line for their country. I havent felt so insulted in a long, long time.

I am an employee at this store. All in all this is a good supermarket to get your groceries at, but DO NOT BUY THE SEAFOOD. Lets just say it is not the "highest" quality. Now I know that we have had some controversy about selling expired items. I would like to clarify that. We are a small town supermarket with a very small staff. We may not always be able to assure that we sell items that are totally up to date. We do sell meat that is "past date" and if you dont want to buy it, then dont. Understand also that most items, other than milk, meat, and cheese, you can eat AFTER the expiration date. That date is also only a sell by date. I know that sometimes our employees, including me, may not be the nicest at times, but WE WOULD LIKE CUSTOMERS NOT TO BE SO FLIPPING RUDE TO US SOMETIMES. Please understand that THE CUSTOMER IS NOT ALWAYS RIGHT. DONT GIVE ME ATTITUDE JUST BECAUSE YOU ARENT ABLE TO GET WHAT YOU WANT EXACTLY. TRY BEING UNDERSTANDING. Thank you.

Marandinos is the best basic grocery store-ever! For the quick shopper, you can get in and out within ten minutes! They have all the basics, the owners actually work on the sales floor with the regular help, and there is always at least one or two cashiers ready to handle your order--and Marandinos actually offers PAPER bags with handles, and plastic bags which will hold more than a few things without ripping! Dont forget to try the Connecticut-roasted FRESH coffee beans, and the store-roasted roast beef-my sons favorite!

Whenever I am in the area, running errands, I like to stop for the fresh meats. Reasonably priced and always good. Oh, and their own label spices! The best! Many are hard-to-find varieties.
