With our local Whole Foods markets turning away from their original commitment to buy from local farms and instead contracting with national organic agribusinesses, thank goodness for Oak Hill Farm. This farm is literally the last spot on Sonoma Hwy that hasnt been devoured by vineyards - the last bit of land being devoted to the production of food for the people instead of alcohol for the tourists. Though not registered as organic because of the paperwork and red tape involved, Oak Hill Farm, does not use pesticide to grow their very good crops. Weve been shopping there for 3 years now, and couldnt get on without them for fresh, seasonal produce. Their store is located inside an old red barn, and many locals simply call this business The Red Barn. Oak Hill Farms most flavorful, highest quality crops are broccoli, lemon cucumbers, string beans, pears, carrots, shallots, garlic, beets, summer and winter squash. Their apples, potatoes and lettuce mixes lack excellence, but their selection of cut flowers and herbs is quite nice and they also offer lovely dried arrangements. The staff is wonderful - so friendly and on a first name basis with many of their patrons who happily stroll amongst the boxes of just-picked produce while listening to reggae music playing on the boom box behind the counter. In terms of cost, you can fill up a grocery bag of delicious veggies and fruits for about $20 and its worth every penny. With corporations like Monsanto attempting to take total control of the worlds seeds and food supply, the very best thing communities can do for the planet is to buy directly from small, local farmers if they cannot grow food themselves. We are proud to support the good work of Oak Hill Farm. Sonoma County used to boast a series of wonderful food-producing farms which have disappeared one by one as the alcohol industry has bought up and ruined all of our priceless farmlands. Neighboring Napa County now has to IMPORT all of its food...a ridiculous state of affairs, and Sonoma County is heading that way just as quickly as it can. Spending your cash at a place like Oak Hill Farm and helping small farmers to earn the livelihood they deserve is what we can do keep a tiny bit of power in the hands of the community and a tiny bit of money out of the hands of the alcohol growers and agribusiness.
