I am brand new to the sport of Kayaking. When we went to rent a kayak from Sierra Outdoor Center in Auburn, among the things discussed we mentioned that we where beginners, that we wanted to go somewhere easy and relaxing, and that we would be bringing our keys, cell phone, and camera. The young lady behind the counter suggested Clementine Lake and suggested a "Dry Bag" for our belongings. As it turns out, "Dry Bags" do not really keep things dry. And to make things worse the one they gave us had a hole in it. Our $600 camera got ruined. Naturally, when we returned the kayak we mentioned that the dry bag did not work, and upon inspection of the bag by one of Sierra’s employees a hole was found. We then mentioned the camera and asked if they would pay for it to be repaired. The owner, Guy, said that as an experienced kayaker of 30 years, you should never put any type of electronic device in a Dry Bag and he has never had a customer make this mistake. We explained that this is what the lady that helped us recommended to use. When we confronted the young lady she denied recommending a dry bag for those items and insulted us by saying that we should have used some common sense. Ouch! This was an expensive lesson. And an insulting one too! Guy and Sierra Outdoor Center showed no integrity. Needless to say, we will not be going back.

Sierra Outdoors Center is the Auburn / highway 80 hub of white water enthusiasts and out door gear. The owner and personable employees of Sierra Outdoor Center are involved with a wide range of white water paddlers. Their connection to the white water community keeps them updated about the performance of river gear and the latest conditions of the river. Sierra Outdoor Center provides a specialized service of selling white water gear, boats, dry suits, cameras, life jackets, fleece and special with water shoes. They also provide a unique service of repairing dry suits and dry suit gaskets. The workmanship is excellent and the turn around time is 24 to 48 hours. The prices can not be beat. Few companies are willing to repair dry suits at all, let alone so quickly. Sierra Out Doors Center is a local business that provides services and expertise for a niche sport involving technical gear. With highly competitive prices and in depth, accurate knowledge of the white water industry Sierra Outdoor Center is an excellent choice for white water dry suits, white water kayaks, white water rafts, white water gear and outdoor accessories.

I rented a 15 raft from here for the South Fork American from Chili Bar to Lotus. The older gentleman (owner?) immediately lectured me on the dangers of the river and started quizzing me on rafting terms and techniques. It felt like one of those lectures your dad gives when you crash the car. Of course, this was AFTER I told him I wasnt guiding the trip, our guide wasnt with me at the shop. Regardless, the river was at 1500 cfs the day we rafted and was REALLY tame with a 15 raft and 6 people. At least know what youre talking about before you go in there to prevent getting verbally abused. I will probably rent here again, but avoid the older guy, since the other employees were helpful and the price was good.

We were on our way up to Donner Pass for some climbing and decided to do a quick stop for a guide book. Sierra outdoor Center was open earlier than any of the other stores offering climbing stuff. This place is primarily focused on water sports but they had the climbing guide we needed and, interestingly, most of their climbing stuff was used. The prices were okay, example 30 or 40 bucks for an old cam in good shape. They also had a large assortment of new and used car rack parts. The guys in there werent exactly smiley at 9 am but they were pretty busy trying to set a group up with kayaks.

The Sierra Outdoor Center houses some AMAZING characters and it is a great resource for whitewater activities. They were very helpful when we came to rent gear and boats. The staff is very honest and has a wealth of information. The owner Guy Cables is a very involved in the whitewater community, helps with river associated events, raising money for injured kayakers and has sponsored many boaters through out the years. We will definately come back. Thanks SOC!!!!

My family and I came here with high hopes, but the store was a complete, unorganized wreck, the employee working the front was very smug and short with us when we asked for information, and it was an overall unwelcoming environment.

We were on our way up to Donner Pass for a quick bite but needed a clamp, a saw and a big bucket and this was a great place to stop. They didnt have those items but they seemed to appreciate our sense of humor!
