I dont know if it was this one, but I went to some Strand in Manhattan in summer 2007. They should really tell you or put up a big sign, because Im from Michigan and they have this game of treating people very rudely. Theyre apparently known for this and its appreciated, but I didnt know that. I just wanted to buy some books. I was really hurt by their treatment of me. One of the other customers was also very rude and mean. It seems that NYC has a reputation for being mean, but they should really control themselves because they get (and want, their economy is not air-tight) a lot of tourists, most of whom are Japanese or Koreans. They should make sure everyone is playing along, because the way they act, some Mid-Westerner or Japanese could really go beserk. Asians are very polite, but if you push too far, they will start biting your major arteries, literally. I have a lot of experience in Asia. NYC is just like a big small town, really self-absorbed, inconsiderate, and inhospitable. But they get what they put it. The only people I know who work in Manhattan is probably a Russian spy, and she has the personality of Hitler visiting a "government re-location camp" on progress-report. And she works on Wall Street in the financial industry ! Believe it or not. NYC is more Mid-West than the Mid-West, though it passes fairly well for a small Southern town. And now I have something to compare Strands to : I visited Bookshop in Chapel Hill and with less room they managed to have a greater variety and smarter selection of books. I was disappointed at the time, considering NYC is one of the worlds printing capitals, and became even more disappointed after Chapel Hill. Plus, Chapel Hill had cats running around and tons of rare books on the shelves and on display. Maybe Manhattan people dont read anything very interesting, and like run-of-the-mill printer fodder, which is surprising to me. At least the MET was awesome and the people were great. Regarding that, Affirmative Action isnt that bad, because black people are a lot friendlier and down-to-earth than white people. Some black people working at the MET treated me really well, again and again. If its still open, yeah, hazard the adventure of Strands bookstore. But be ready. I wish those poor (not literally) Japanese could read my comment and brace themselves ( they probably never heard of Google maps in English ). Big cultural difference between East and West, ladies and gentlemen. Its going to cause big problems in the future.

One of the worst experiences ever. I went to Strand bookstore to sell my books. Drove there from Brooklyn with a couple of boxes of books that I intended to sell. I parked and walked to the store to ask if I should bring in all of my boxes to potentially sell to them. The worker told me yes, so I went back to my car and lugged in all of my boxes of books. Then, when I was finally finished bringing in my boxes. The same worker then told me that it was to many to go through, so they could not go through any at all. So now he decides to tell me that Saturday is their busiest day of the week and they wont be able to look through my boxes until the middle of the week. All of the books that would not have a value to them would be "recycled" and I wouldnt get paid for them. I was very confused and a little frustrated, why did they make me carry all those books in to tell me that? They could have told be that before, but what was worst was the fact that they were not BUSY AT ALL, I would understand if they had huge line of people waiting, but that wasnt a case at all! There was one other girl besides me and all the workers were just gossiping and standing around with each other. When I begged one of the guys to at least look through some of my boxes he agreed but gave me an attitude. Over all my experience here was very disappointing and I felt misled by their staff. I spent more money on gas and parking then I made on those books.

Straordinario!!!

I love books, love to read and Strands is a Bookstore with a wide range of selections. You dont have to be a book worm to like this store. They sell it all. Books for Everyone, no matter your interest. They have the popular books. They have the books that no-one else carries. The hard to find books, new or used. For the most part, the used books they sell are in great reading condition. They have $1 racks, if you happen to have a thesis to write on something old, you can get ideas and information from these books without spending much money on something you will only use that one time. I love coming here and spending time browsing. They have a good collection of educational books for teachers, parents and children. If I ever decide to home school my child I know I can count on Strands for the academic material that I will need. I picked up a large US map, about 42"x50" that has an adhesive to stick on the wall. It allows my little one to fill in with an erasable marker the name of the states, its capital and each states abbreviation. It is also easy to peel off. I saw other educational stick on that are priced right and I plan on returning to purchase. Strands always have competitive prices to other major bookstores. It truly is a place to get lost in and fall in Love...
