Its too bad this place has declined over the years. Speciality stores like this (i.e. the ones that do only fish/aquariums et al) are far & few between. So rating them with one star only doesnt come lightly for us. Weve patronized this store for probably 20 years or so, but hadnt been there for well over a year. Recently having reinstalled fish to my "pet" population, I returned to this store because in the past theyve always provided fair prices, good selection & healthy fish & workers who knew the business. What a surprise when the last 2 visits back were HORRIBLE! The place was dirty, there were literally little dead fish on the cement flooring, empty plastic bags strewn about, the tanks were borderline filthy, & many of the fish looked unhealthy & lethargic. Even the overall shelf stock seemed dirty and out of sync/not organized. There were 2 people working, one was helping a customer, but seemed so arrogant & defiant, if I was the guy before us I would have walked out. We tried 3x to wave down the other guy, who was more interested in feeding the other tanks than helping. It wasnt like he didnt know we needed help, as its standard policy to wait patiently for your turn for fish by the tanks, for help. But even when he looked our way, saw everyone waiting he kept right on ignoring everyone. Even a simple "Ill be right with you" would have gone a long way by either employee. During the time of our wait, 4 or 5 people entered the store & yet he still ignored everyone. We had to physically walk up to him to beg for help! Not once did the 1st guy acknowledge the back-log! The attitude following was rude and very curt, like as paying customers we were interfering! I know for a fact none of us gave them any reason for either to have attitude. So enough said on that matter... Prices also seemed VERY high for fish and plants also. The tanks were also not marked correctly. Prices out of his mouth contradicted to what was listed. Strange & unprofessional. Although Ive detailed alot on one visit, much of what we saw and experienced happened both times. In the past wed never had any type of complaint with the place. This has changed, and its really a shame. Previously we liked this store. We avoid going to chain pet stores, as these little independents always provided better service, knowledge and heart. This store CURRENTLY has none! Overall both visits turned us off to the place. Shop here with caution, wed say. Our assessment as of this date, is a serious change needs to be made, as the place reeks of management/crew/owners who simply dont care about the LIVE fish under their care, their PAYING customers, nor respect of the community. As of now, wed rather travel farther up town to Petco (Union Square) to their competition. This may seem harsh, but this type of repetitive retail experience usually ends with customers looking elsewhere to spend their money, ending disaster for the business. For the time being well be spending ours elsewhere. If they improve, well post an updated review.

This place was horrible. Dont bother going there, theyll just give you the run around. I had spent all day looking online for discounted rates on kennels for my new puppy (they can be pricey, so the discount made a difference) and found on Petland Discounts website that the kennel I want was marked down from $89.99 to $63.88, not including a special online order promotion of an additional 10% off. Even without that additional 10%, the sale price was a deal, so I decided to stop by there on my way home from work. I even printed out the website page to show them which kennel I wanted. When I got there, however, they rang me up for the full amount. I pointed out to the cashier that it was supposed to be on sale, and showed me the sheet I had printed which clearly listed the reduced price. He got his manager on the phone, and his manager basically said that the website is "a totally different thing" than the store, and that the prices in store are not the same as online. When I pointed out that there was no indication ANYWHERE on the site that this was the case, and that I expected him to honor it since Id gone to the effort of doing my research and came to their store specifically for the discount, he said no, he wouldnt, because he claimed he did not have the authority to change the price. I asked him who did, and he said there was a special customer service number to call but of course they were closed for the day. This place is a total sham and they were completely unhelpful and borderline belligerent when I pointed out that they were committing blatant false advertising. I believe what they did may even be illegal, but I honestly was so frustrated all I could do was walk out and not buy the crate. My puppy had to go one extra night without a kennel, but I just could not buy their product full price and reward their store for their completely unprofessional behavior and downright lies. Dont go there, this place should be put out of business.

I have been a client of Petland Discounts for 8 years, I used to love going there with my 2 dogs and because I also have 2 cats I spent an average of $150 there every month. Since they changed their management, the staff are way less friendly and unhelpful . I went today to buy dog food and wanted to compare few brands. There are no price tags on any of their products. Or on the shelves. When I complained, I was told to bring each bag I was interested in to the cashier to check the price! Really!!? I was looking at maybe 6 or 7 different brands and 20 lbs bags, i wanted to change food for my dogs. I appreciate you are cleaning, but what about having prices displayed for your products! cleaning is a poor excuse for not doing so. I live down the street but I am going to take my business somewhere else from now on.

On recent quick trip to the pet store I was thrown off how lousy my closing interaction was with the sales clerk. After my items were rung up, he gave me his opinion on how I spent too much money on my pet and how he was raised understanding the value of a dollar. Can you imagine? I dont want anyone feeling like I did. If you dont have anything respectful and caring to say to your customers, why bother working at a pet store.

Definitely one of the better Petlands in NYC. The employees are very friendly and helpful. Love how they can custom order certain species of fish that youre looking for which they might not be presently carrying at their store. Their selection of bettas are amazing and they actually take good care of them unlike many local chain petstores.

Great associate available to help guide us to be able to give our pet fish the best life possible. Check out was a little inconsistent, but they treated us very well. The team was very knowledgeable and got us exactly what we needed for our tank. I love the mom and pop feel and support.
