English/Português Kinokuniya has 3 "floors", Ground - asian books; Underground - great school and gift material; and 1st floor - Manga/Anime stuff. My review is based on Underground and 1st floor, since I am not a books person. Short version of my reviews is: I love this place so much. 1st floor is heaven. At least if you are a manga/anime fan / weeaboo / otaku, dont be shy, if you like any of that type of stuff at least a little bit, you must visit Kinokuniya. It is not a figurine type of shop, which made it all the best for me. Ive never seem a place with so many quality merchan in my life. It is a key-chain, phone charm, artbook, magazine, manga, DVD, with a few nendoroids and figurines type of store. I went there 4 times during my 2 week trip to NY. But get your wallet ready. Underground was quite nice, great if you like notebooks, schedules, pencils, origami paper, cool stuff to give as gifts, the only reason I wasnt so excited about it is because it was pretty much the same as a district in São Paulo - SP - Brazil called "Liberdade". It is my favorite district in São Paulo, it is pretty cool, but you know... Its inside my country.

Great store if youre into Japanese culture, animation, and manga! I am a frequent customer that visits once every other week for some Japanese imported manga and accessories. I even signed up for membership in order to save some money. The main floor has some English novels, English translations of well known Japanese authors like Murakami. The basement has stationary, Japanese magazines (yes, they sell Weekly Shonen Jump here!), childrens books in Japanese, and books in learning Japanese. Great source if you want to learn Japanese! I recommend the Genki and Minna no Nihongo series! Last but not least, the upper (aka the second) floor has anime and manga both in Japanese and English. There are also figurines, buttons, messenger bags, t-shirts, calendars, posters, and anime art books being sold here so its definitely worth checking out! I have yet to check out the cafe but I heard its good so Ill give it a chance one of these days. The vibe here feels very Japanese so you wont be expecting them to check on you every five seconds to ask if need help like many stores in the city. They leave you alone to do your exploring which is awesome! I mean, youll probably have one person who would ask but its very uncommon. The staff here are very informative and patient so if you have any questions, dont be afraid to ask! Be sure you know what you are looking for so you dont give the staff a hard time assisting you. Im usually the sort of customer that dont usually ask for assistance unless I looked everywhere for a product and was not able to find it. I find some reviews of people not liking the "high price" of some of the things sold here forgetting the fact that its imported from Japan. Unfortunately imports are always pricey no matter what country you live in. I plan to teach English in Japan once I get my TESOL so I wouldnt be surprised if I find certain American goods being pricey over there. Overall, I love this store to and I highly recommend this place!

If youre looking for Japanese books, magazines, or even stationary then Kinokuniya is the place to go. Tucked right across the street from Bryant Park, this location doesnt have a huge, visible sign, but dont worry, it is there. When you walk inside, youll notice that the bookstore is divided into two floors. The first floor has new releases, and general books that are in English. On the basement floor, youll find your Japanese magazines, books, and stationary. Kinokuniya is probably your best bet for Japanese periodicals and books within Manhattan. For magazines, you can purchase an annual subscription but on the downside, youll still have to come here to pick it up every month. Kind of defeats the purpose, but if I can remember correctly, it is a little cheaper as opposed to purchasing them monthly. From time to time, there will be events held such as book signings, so keep an eye out as they post an event list on their website. Price-wise, things here are a little on the pricier side due to import fees plus mark up. Nonetheless, they pretty much have a monopoly so theres nowhere else in the city that has a selection as vast as Kinokuniya.

Kinokuniya Books is simply amazing. I travel to the city quite often and I make it a habit to stop here. Anything relating to Japan/Anime/Manga or anything else you can think of, they have it. The first floor is all books about Asian history, photographs of parts of japan and Asia, and is also where you check out. From their if you go to the basement its all stationary supplies, which is probably the coolest thing youll ever see. The Japanese take time to make their products the best quality, and thats only what this store offers. They have a huge selection of pens, study books (mostly in Japaneses) Notebooks, incense, some jewelry, and so much more. If you go to the top floor this is where you will find the cafe as well as all the largest selection of both English and Japaneses manga/ anime / music CDs. The staff is very polite and will help you with your questions. The cafe is a tad bit pricey bit the food is very good. If i could i would rate this place 100/5 stars but sadly i cannot. I highly recommend you stop by this store if your ever in the area!

I just had 2 bad experiences at this store in the stationary department. The male and female retailers would not order a laptop case that was in their catalog. Yesterday, I visited, and unsure about a size, they said I would need to purchase both sizes, but their return policy is store credit only, even though you have only a week to return items, and even though you dont even touch the product. I am sure they can sell and turnover that item fast. Then, I went again today, since I made padding and wanted to buy that as a gift. They said "no, you need to buy 2 products." When I questioned "information" and some "cashiers," they creatively suggested to buy a laptop case and a pen. But, once again, the sales associate said I would need to buy 2 of the same items. They told me to find it on their online store, and he would not give me the catalog number. It was on page 87. Last year, I found cool cork iPad case, and a laptop sleeve. This year when I went back, the items were not as creative or of higher quality anymore. I wont shop here anymore.
