generally awesome but horrible experience last week. brought bike in for a VERY VERY simple chain tighten, true wheel, and replace brake pads. I got the bike back and the wheel wasnt trued, waited to get this done on the spot- (theyre very good about this). Paid $40, totally worth it. 5 blocks into my ride the entire rear cog completely sheared off- every tooth sheared off. I locked my bike and had to take a cab 20 blocks then another cab to get home. Next morning I (once again) cabbed back to my bike and walked it 20 blocks back to City Bicycles- they charged me an ADDITIONAL $70 and the mechanic relentlessly argued with me that they had ZERO responsibility for this happening the night before- I told them the bike was fine for 1.5 years and suddenly it breaks when it leaves your store? He was combative so I let it go and paid the additional $70. So now Im out $120 and $50 in cabs. The mechanic also said that the chain was worn and thats why this happened- I asked why he didnt mention that when they were tightening it? No response..Jonathan wasnt around so no solution could be had...Very depressing- I really liked the place but cant trust the mechanic. P.S. The chain the mechanic replaced is skipping like mad so my bike is actually worse off than when I brought it there and out $120 + $50 in cabs..Awesome.

i went to City Bikes after another persons recommendation and i have to say the staff is very knowledgeable, helpful, patient, and POLITE which is really really rare in New York City Bike Shops. Rubin (i think thats his name) sat around and told me quite a few maintenance tips, followed by figuring out exactly which tools i needed. My manager, who is just starting to ride fixed gear, was with me and asked a million questions as well... the guy was very helpful and didnt try to upsell me on excessive stuff -- told me to get cheaper tools in some cases and to go to a hardware store for other things. I highly recommend this place if youre looking to get your Fixed/Track bike looked at.

One of the worst service experiences I have ever encountered. For years to come, I will be telling the story of how indifferent and unhelpful the clerk was. I came in ready to buy two bikes (which I did later in the day elsewhere), and he just blew off my couple of typical questions like I was a nuisance. Well worth the visit just to walk away with that experience. I am a business person myself and am likely to share this example of how not to do business with thousands of my own employees! One bad customer-facing employee can do incredible damage to a companys reputation. Owner of this store, wherever you are, beware!!

HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. Unacceptable for the caliber of service you expect from any business in Manhattan. They did not greet me and basically snarled at me while talking to me. Literally told me, "If you know what that problem is, you could fix it yourself." When I asked to speak to the mechanic, he quickly said something in Spanish and the mechanic soon adopted his same unprofessional attitude. Really? I almost never do reviews but, the "service" was so utterly abysmal I did not mind taking the time to help others know about it and make an informed decision.

With the new NYC bike paths, biking Manhattan will become a "must do" for visitors. I stopped in to City Bicycles to rent a bike for the day and was completely satisfied with the service. The staff was friendly and helpful -- providing a free bike route map and directions to the Brooklyn Bridge. The bike was in good shape and I had no problems with it as I rode to Prospect Park, Central Park and the Hudson River Greenway. I highly recommended going with a bike shop rather than the street-side rentals.

Unpretentious, knowledgeable staff. They know what theyre talking about without the hipster snobbery you encounter at grittier stores. The first time I went in I had just moved to New York and was looking for a commuter bike. I didnt have a lot to spend, so I got hooked up with a hybrid Del Sol. It has a big comfy seat and was a great starter bike. I have since moved onto a hybrid Jamis, that I bought from them and I absolutely love it. I go there for all my biking needs and theyve always been so helpful.

the guys who run this shop are young, ex-messengers (assumption) who are no-frills but professional and pleasant. its a small shop and i mostly come in for small fixes. they have clothes upstairs and a small selection of complete bikes and specialty components. id recommend this shop if youre in the area and dont want to get hit over the head with commission-based sales associates or if you need a little maintenance. trust these guys. plus its always nice to see a minority-run business.

I have had nothing but very positive experiences at this shop. The guys are friendly, knowledgeable and hardworking. Customer service seems to be a very high priority. One reviewer commented about high prices; in my experience they are competitively priced. I really cant expr ess how much I love this shop. They have earned my complete loyalty.

Some things are definitely overpriced but it is a decent shop. If you want cheap parts that get the job done, look elsewhere. Pretty much anything you see in the store can be found cheaper either online (Amazon) or at other stores. They do have a nice selection of bikes and an in-house repair shop.

Helpful, knowledgable and friendly. I recommend City Bikes to anyone who is looking for a new bike or service/parts for current bike. They are owner operated by Jhonathan. He loves all things bicycles and it shows. Highly Recommended!

Great bike shop. Laid back, friendly, unpretentious staff, good attention to detail and stand by their work. Very speedy work and they were patient to explain pros/cons of various things to a novice biker.
