Been to this place a bunch of times as its in my general vicinity. The coffee is amazing. Ive tried everything from their premium drip coffee to their lattes and espressos and have never been disappointed. The food is pretty much what you can expect from a small cafe- limited and average. Service is always friendly, but often slow due to there often being only employee behind the counter. The place is small and cramped. There are only a few small tables so finding seating can be a problem. Very little outdoor seating- only a wooden bench in front. Theres an open area to the side of the building, but it isnt very inviting- two rotting picnic tables surrounded by mulch, mud, weeds, broken chairs and cigarette butts If they could smooth it out and pave it over, theyd have a nice courtyard where they could put a bunch of tables for more outdoor seating. They have free and fast WiFi which is another big plus. Despite some other reviews on here, its not the hippest coffee shop around (if you enjoy hip places), but it is a great place to start your day.

This little coffeeshop is nestled off the beaten path in the Museum District, but it really is a great little place. The service was geniunely friendly, an the atmosphere enjoyable. There is an eclectic mix of vintage and modern furniture, and art for sale on the walls. The best part about this place is the excellent food and coffee, and the price you pay for it. I ordered a caramel macchiato and a turkey pesto panini. My total was just over 9 dollars, a great value. The macchiato, extremely fresh and rightfully so considering they roast in store. The turkey panini was amazing, really. Freshly sliced turkey breast with bacon, gouda, tomato and pesto. Best of all, this panini is really big compared to any Ive ever had, I almost couldnt finish it. Highly recommended, great coffeeshop.

The location is nice and the coffee is good, on the same level as Rostovs, but the staff are terrible. I expect a little bit of hipster arrogance at a local coffee shop in this part of town, but these folks seem to sit outside most of the day smoking with their friends, only going into the shop when a customer arrives. Once you get their attention (and they will finish that story first, thanks), they give you the impression that the shop runs the best without any customers in it. Not only have I stopped visiting the shop, I wont even buy the beans at Whole Foods because Im not interested in helping such a badly managed business.

The coffee was good, not great. I got the cold brew, and it just tasted like regular old iced coffee to me, nothing special. What really got me are the bagels - they were also nothing special for sure and over toasted, and I saw the preparer using those little mini tubs of Philidelphia cream cheese on my bagel. Like, that is literally what you would get at a Wawa or Starbucks. Compare this to many other great, independent roasteries Ive been to in DC, MD, and VA, and theyve used good fresh bagels and real, good cream cheese. And they didnt make bagels the star of their food menu, like Black Hand did.

Definitely my favorite coffee shop. We previously lived in the neighborhood and when we were looking to move back one of our criteria was that it be within walking distance of black hand. Great staff who know what theyre doing and just seem genuinely kind. (Not like Fast Food forced smiles but actual kindness.) The dirty chai is really great and has maybe ruined other dirty chais for me because I have yet to find something that competes. Its the best place to stop in for quick cold brew and a breakfast sandwich. Were in here several times a week and when were not, were using the beans at home.

Underwhelming coffee is the nicest way to put it. Im not a connoisseur by any means, but I have trouble believing this is considered good coffee to so many. I actually thought for a moment they had accidentally confused gravel and dirt for coffee beans. Im not a fan of starbucks or lamplighter either, and Im sure people are diehards for their particular cup of coffee- so take that into account. I say give this place a shot, but dont let hype cloud your judgment, there are plenty who would rather have coffee at a funeral home over this.

I am in a wheelchair and the only reason this spot got 3 as oppossed to 5 stars was because there was some difficulty getting in the door, to the owner credit, he worked hard to make it easier for me. That aside the coffee was excellent, I had a caramel latte and it was awesome. The space is borderline run down but that gives it a great vibe. The staff was friendly and seemed to know the locals by name. My sandwich was excellent as well(PCP). Minus the issue getting in with my wheelchair this place was outstanding! Ill be back!

Great place!!! Coffees are the best around and the service for the most part is really good. Although the place is really small with limited seating, the atmosphere is more relaxed than some of the other coffee shops around. (Although you get the occasional straight-laced suit and tie and preppy Trump supporter types whining about the hipsters and gays.) Location is off the beaten path a bit, in the middle of a residential neighborhood, but that makes it all the better. I go there twice a week and have never been disappointed.

This is a nice local coffee shop in the Fan. They roast their own beans which is a huge plus. They have free WiFi and there is a Little Free Library outside the front door! They were open during the huge snow storm which was convenient. My only complaints are that they do not roast a large enough variety of coffees for me, and the shop is a bit small, so it can be hard to get a seat. It also seems that there is usually only one employee working, so he or she can only handle customers at such a rate.

Superb coffee. This quaint little coffee shop is tucked away on a corner of one of the most interesting neighborhoods of Richmond VA. Blackhand Coffee roasts their own beans and achieves that rare combination of full flavor without the bitterness or scorched flavor that most others seem to suffer from. The shop is small and popular, so if youre okay with the mass produced and harsh coffee that the chains offer, leave this place to drinkers that appreciate a superb cuppa joe.

Small place, nice little cafe environment. Very crowded - could use some outdoor seating. Bagel was delish, but by 10:30am they were out of 2 out of their 3 types of bagels. Dirty chai was really yummy. It is true however that its not their own chai - its a mix by the brand David Rico. Regardless it was well made and the espresso had a smooth taste. They didnt make it hot enough though, and they couldnt heat it up because they have no microwave.

A few great employees, but primarily staffed with elitist douchbags. In particular, Maggie is by far the most abusive, arrogant, condescending and insulting douchebag masquerading as a glorified coffee server. The clientele consists mainly of genuinely warm and friendly people, but theres a never ending parade of elitist douchbags frequently dressed in various costumes on a daily basis.

I think the coffee is crap it was in a small thermos & smelled liked an ashtray. i cant stand coffee thats in a thermos and there was no creamer i had to ask. With only 3 people in there i figured they would be able to stay on it plus they didnt have raw sugar. It was 8 dollars for a cup of coffee and a mocha that tasted nasty too. Ill stick to brewing my own!!!
