Progressively more disappointed in REI. Im a longtime member willing to pay steep premium b/c such great customer service. Now, not so much. Theyre still high priced but severely curtailed return policy (plus I see they now charge $20 for privilege of becoming a member, not sure when that started, like I said, been a member for long time). I just went in to buy small item during Labor Day sale but couldnt locate my 20% off coupon which in the past wasnt a problem. Showed my membership card and the cashier could obviously easily see from my computerized "record" that Id not yet used my discount coupon but was told that "policy" is "no coupon/no discount." This isnt about a lot of money (a few bucks), just the overall nature of REIs attitude.[Note that Id just been in the Backcountry Gear store and saw them swipe a copy of their 20% coupon (from Eugene Weekly) that they kept by the register for a customer whod similarly wasnt able to produce their own copy.] When I called to complain to REIs customer service, a chipper young woman listened patiently to me recite the above facts. She was completely silent (meaning not offering any explanation or understanding, just politely tolerating me) except when I asked her to pass along the complaint of a very long-standing member to her manager. Her reply (again in a chipper voice): "no problem." Yes, "problem." Backcountry Gear now has my business. This isnt about a single incident involving a discount coupon but rather an ongoing erosion of previously high customer service standards while still keeping their (very) high price points. REI, seems to think that its still the only place to get high quality outdoor gear; newsflash, this aint 1980 any more. Good bye REI and your arrogant ways.

As an avid outdoorsman, well versed in many outdoor recreation pursuits, I was appalled when my partner was lied to about a product on sale in order to clear their inventory. The retail specialist claimed that a Rino 650 (GPS and 2 way radio transceiver) would in fact let my partner and I communicate from the Three Sisters Wilderness to Downtown Eugene. He lied to my partner in order to make a sale. Upon looking over the product and calling this location to bring up the issue I was told by most likely the same retail specialist that it would in fact not work over that distance, but only after I confronted him about the before mentioned in-store transaction. If we had used the equipment in the field and I found out that it didnt send a signal to Eugene, my partner would then follow our emergency plan and alert either the Middle Fork Ranger District Station, or the Mckenzie River Ranger Station of my last known whereabouts. You can probably see where this is going. I will returning the item and filing a complaint.

Thomas in the shoe department was great! He was so helpful and patient, and he was helping many people at the same time. I actually felt bad for him that he had no other coworkers helping him, but he was definitely good at multitasking and dealing with many customers at once. Ive never been to a place where the employee actually measured both the length and width of my foot to make sure I was getting the right kind of shoe. Ive always just found a shoe I wanted on the display and asked for my size. Thomas actually recommended shoes to me based on my foot type, and also showed me different ways to lace the shoes to avoid pressure points. While I was there, another lady came in to get shoes, and I heard her mention that her daughter referred her to REI because of the help Thomas gave the daughter the day before. Keep up the good work, Thomas!

Had a terrible first time experience at rei. I had been given a gift card there from my parents to get a nice rain jacket (a luxury in my life). As I was there trying on a jacket in front of the mirror I had a store employee come up to me and first thing ask me " are you going to buy that? " I was taken aback and said well I dont know I am just trying on some jackets. I felt uncomfortable, judged and marginalized (being someone who usually cant afford things so nice). I feel her questioning me was uncalled for and intrusive. I will not be going back there again, even with the remainder of my gift card.

REI is really the best place to go if youre looking for sporting gear. They sell everything from mountain bikes to water filters. There are great discounts and really nice staff. I highly recommend becoming a member: within a week I got a discount that payed for 90% of the membership fee. You also get to go to talks from REI employees for free with the membership. Overall, I think REI does a great job of supporting sports with their talks, donations (a percentage of the membership fee goes to non profits like the Disciples of Dirt), and equipment.

Expertise and staff experience endlessly wise and insightful ... always use my REI card and love getting that year-end kickback! My membership is an investment in health and adventure and my travels are forever ensured by my fun and frequent stops at my local REI as well as the store locations on the road!

i loved that co-op when i got back into biking and running around 2006-8... i think getting the return @ the end of the year made me spend more. bike jerseys, socks, mountain bike shoes, winter gloves, tires, rain jacket, bike messenger bags, thermal ankle length cycling tights, winter road bike tires, chain oil. then i would just take the refund and buy a bike chain online. i still have some of that stuff as its held up reasonably well. always helpful staff too.

Exceptional cycling department. Went in this morning for assistance with my Kinetic stationary cycling station and a gentleman in the repair department provided me with the part I needed within moments. A young salesperson (lady) was exceptional with explaining the cycling rear flasher functions along with the high quality metal tire pump I purchased. A great team to have waiting on someone in need of help! Thank you for your wonderful service!

I experienced the best customer service EVER at REI in Eugene Oregon. I received personal attentive service from Kelli and Sarah. Kelli understood my foot issues and fitted me with proper hiking shoe. I love them. They fit so well and give me a great deal of support; I feel like running in them. Sarah assisted me with finding the best backpack for my size. Looking forward to my next visit. Thanks so much. A happy camper, Sheila

Always have a great experience here. The prices might seem a little steep, but considering their "satisfaction guaranteed" return policy, its not a problem at all. I do all my outdoor shopping here simply due to that guarantee, good selection, and great service. You also essentially get 10% off every purchase when you become a member, 15% if you get their credit card.

Ive called multiple times about bikes sizes and no one there seems to know how to size bikes that they sell, so I would stay away and go to a place that knows what they are talking about. I was even told to go to a competitor to try bikes out there and then come back to buy it at REI. Is this how they plan to sell three thousand dollar bikes? Very unprofessional.
