EyeStyles was where our family went for many years, conveniently located next to our dentist. But with the high prices charged for eyewear, we recently shopped around for better value. Online stores like Zenni Optical, WarbyParker, and EyeBuyDirect offer MUCH better prices, but obviously cant perform the eye exam remotely. My wife visited EyeStyles in February for her exam, and asked for her prescription. She was refused, and told she had to make another trip back at a later date to pick it up. (Note that by federal law, opticians are REQUIRED to give you a copy of your prescription following your exam or contact lens fitting, whether or not you ask for it.) Even though it was a great hassle for her, she made time to go pick her prescription up another day. But when she got there she was rudely told that she would have to call a day in advance for it to "be ready for her". Yeah, right. She filled out a form to formally request her prescription, and came home close to tears from the way shed been bullied. I encouraged her to not give in to EyeStyles efforts to intimidate her, but at this point she was ready to fold and just pay $300+ for glasses that looked halfway decent. These feelings grew when she finally went a 3rd time for her prescription--after giving a 1-day advance call--and was told her prescription couldnt be found! Due to her fear of dealing with them again, and a draining family health situation, she was unable to try again until this month (November). Today she called yet again to schedule for pick-up the next day. But several minutes later, she gets a call back and EyeStyles tells her it would be impossible to release her prescription to her because its now expired. Um, except that part where federal law stipulates that eyeglass/contacts prescriptions must be valid for at least one year (unless a medically substantiated reason is given for a shorter length), and NJ law which requires optometrists to maintain copies of those records for 7 years. After 9 months of being lied to and illegally denied our prescription (which the federal "Eyeglass Rule" states should have been given to us from the day of her exam), were done with EyeStyles and theyll see no business from our family again. Well also be filing formal complaints with the FTC, State Attorney General, and the NJ Division of Consumer Affairs. The anti-competitive, anti-consumer practice of withholding prescriptions was meant to be put to rest decades ago. Apparently EyeStyles still finds it more profitable to abuse their customers rather than follow the law. Edit for 12/01/2014: Today we stopped in because we were seeing the dentist and EyeStyles _finally_ released her prescription (284 days past due according to both Federal and New Jersey law). They didnt hassle her this time--but maybe just because I was standing beside her with a sheaf of statutes printed off, recording the interaction on my phone.

Dual-Pricing: Eyestyles Inc., AKA EyeStyles of New Jersey, AKA EyeStyles of Union, AKA EyeStyles of Trenton, has one price for regular customers and another price for customers using a Groupon voucher. They regularly sell 2 pairs of single focus prescription eyeglasses for $99, i.e. buy one, get one free. Their regular price for one pair of single focus prescription eyeglasses in their cheapest line of eyeglass frames is also $99. With a $200 Groupon voucher, they charged me $239 for 1 pair of the cheapest eyeglasses they offer with a single-focus prescription strength of 2.00 which is just a basic pair of reading glasses - power of 2.00. My price, including what I paid for the Groupon voucher, would have been $68. They also offered me a 2nd pair for a total cost to me of $94, a savings of $5 over their usual 2/$99 special. Not worth going out of your way to purchase eyeglasses from them with a $200(?) Groupon voucher.
