I recently acquired a 1 year old corgi. For the first couple of weeks, he was nice and cute and cuddly. He then suddenly turned into a snarling, biting, barking ball of fury. I am a veterinary technician and I have seen my share of not so nice dogs. He was one of the worst. I was afraid that if I brought him to group dog obedience classes, he would actually attack me or the trainer. I was afraid of my own dog. I asked if I could get a consult to decide if he could even be in a class. They evaluated my dog within the next few days (FOR FREE). Two trainers worked with him alone for almost an hour and by the end of that hour, I was amazed at the progress he had already made. They explained things to me and showed me how to set rules for my dog. They said I should start classes as soon as possible. The beginners class was already 4 weeks in progress, but they let me start in that class the same evening I had originally brought him in. These people know what they are doing, and they do it well. Plus, you can clearly tell that they actually care about the relationship you have with your dog. They want every single human and dog to have a very strong and loving bond.

Despite hearing alarming anecdotes from previous students, I assumed that obedience instructors would have updated their methods in intervening years, and enrolled my dog for basic obedience. I found that the instructor continues to rely on outdated and discredited methods and theories. The insistence that you must establish an alpha relationship with your dog using physical methods is based on misunderstanding of abnormal, captive wolf populations--please Google for discussion. Rather than redirection or positive communication, I saw punitive methods that included spraying Bitter Apple directly into the mouth of a puppy that was barking out of boredom, and intimidating dogs until they urinated submissively. My dog and I did not go back. Two stars because the owner did promptly refund my registration fee, and the Mutt Hutt carries an extensive range of treats and food.

Our first experience with this school was in 1990 when we lived in the Fargo/Moorhead area. Wally and MaryEllen taught two young dog owners how to have expectations of and train our puppy. 27 years later, my father and I drive 220 miles round trip to come to each 1 hour Beginners class! FM Dog Obedience folks are that good! And, it is fun! The frequency and consistency of the classes combined with the trainers attention to detail are far above any other dog training classes Ive taken. I hope people in the FM area understand what an exceptional opportunity they have in FM Dog Obedience! You must have the best trained dog owners in the region!

My puppy and I are finishing the Advanced Beginners class and will round out the program with the Novice class starting in a few weeks. FM Dog Obedience has great owners who take a hands on approach to training and always take the time to snuggle my pup, great trainers who care about the dogs and their owners, and an excellent, friendly and knowledgeable staff! Along with their extended food, treat, toy, hygiene care and equipment products, the staff know exactly what to recommend without being pushy. Love this place!
