Been to the store numerous times, and when they give you the time of day, the staff is very knowledgeable and the gear, while perhaps small in terms of volume, is top notch. The problem is that you are more often than not likely to be totally ignored by the arrogant employees, and I assume this comes from the top as Ive heard many complain of what a jicky-jack the owner is. Also, their website is an absolute joke. The only time I go there anymore is when I know what I want and when I have one of their 20% off coupons that will save me more than buying something online where there is no sales tax nor shipping fees. I love supporting small, local businesses, but this one is really not worth it.

Just shopped here a few times last week. This place is now lacking any employees who really know their inventory (finding an employee who would help me was a challenge too). I was looking for specific camping and canoeing gear for a BWCA trip. The items i needed were either out of stock or the employees didnt know where the item was. I ended up finding the things that they did have in stock on my own. The other items I purchased in Ely. I was a regular customer back when I live in mpls while attending the U. Good to know that I no longer have to be loyal and make the trek to Cedar/Riverside when Im in the cities. I can buy my items online or at Piragis or REI and have a better experience.

I had a wonderful experience at MM. I ordered a backpacking stove over the phone and picked it up the following week with no problems. I did not experience the customer service problems others have shared, however I was bounced around several times while placing the order on the phone. It was not an extraordinary amount of time, though, and it could have been very busy for all I know (it was just days before Christmas). The selection was not as large as some online or large retail outlets, but I have a feeling that the staff would order something for you if you inquired. Prices seemed reasonable and I always feel better spending my money at a local business.

This is THE place for the highest level of knowledge and experience in outdoor adventure! Ive been a whitewater kayaker for more than 30 years and bought my first, second, third...(you get the idea) boats, paddles, life jackets, helmets etc. from Midwest. When youre beginning a new sport and worry youll regret your purchase come here. I appreciate their co-op competitor from Seattle as much the next guy but what "processed cheese food" (read Velveeta) is to aged cheddar from Wisconsin is "Seattle" to Midwest. They both have their place but when your butt is on the line you should trust the experience of the experts at Midwest Mountaineering.

Tried to arrange a canoe rental. Required the canoe by 9:00am for an event, however they opened at that time so I couldnt pick up that day. Said Id pick it up as late as necessary the previous day so they wouldnt lose any revenue. They were unwilling to work with me, saying I needed to pay for 2 days, regardless. They were obviously just out for extra cash and didnt want to assist people who wanted to do a sport they are in business for. I was very disappointed.

Stopped in to see if I could get a pair of replacement hand tethers for my outdated Leki walking sticks. Although my old style wasnt carried anymore, they were able to find a box of old(unsold) and mismatched ones in the basement. I was able to find a pair that worked for me and they just let me have them, no cost! Now that is what I call customer service! You can bet I will be coming here first for my next outdoor/camping need. Way to go Midwest Mountaineering!

Great shop. There are a few stalwarts in the clothing and camp section that I love getting advice from. They seem to really know their stuff and are pretty helpful in a non pressure/ hovering sort of way. I cant comment on the other departments, as I dont buy from them. Im sorry to read that the owner is not a gentleman but the people who do work for him seem to make up for it in my mind. Still a great store and if you are patient you can get some good deals.

Always so friendly and helpful - I love visiting MWM! I spent about an hour trying on different climbing shoes and trying them out in their bouldering cave and didnt feel rushed at all. The comped parking makes it easy in and out which is rare in that area and I love that I can bring my dog in with me! Make sure you sign up for their email list to stay on top of new arrivals and great coupons!

Best selection, best employees, somewhat expensive but they are selling high end goods so thats expected. The loft upstairs sells more reasonably priced last years designs options. I really like everything this business does for their customers and the community, they are the opitomy of how a local business should be run. Kudos to them on their yearly expo & canoe auction, I very much enjoy it.

Like REI but local and just way better. I wish I could give them more stars! They fixed my tent! $25 to fix instead of buying a new one for $300+? This is the only place I know of that can do that! The FREE bouldering cave is great and the staff really know the places in the Midwest to go for an outdoor adventure.

Midwest is one of the best outdoor retailers in the Midwest. They have a solid selection of outdoor clothing and backpacking equipment. They frequently send out couples and deals in their newsletter. Thrifty outfitters (upstairs) is one if the best values and best kept secrets in the outdoor retail world.

Midwest has for many years been the outdoor store for the passionate outdoors enthusiast, bit thats not to say they are for elitists. Great for newbies too as the staff is knowledgeable on their own areas as well as others. Thrifty outfitters also provides great repairs at a good value for many gear items.

Just an amazing local business. If youre new in town and love the outdoors they host a bunch of events that can help you connect with the local communities. I love their pint nights and expos. Their staff is friendly and experienced. You can also get some great deals in their Thrifty Outfitters upstairs.

The staff is really supportive and they have a huge collection of gear. They also have a thrift something section where they have a huge collection of clothing and equipment at reduced price. This stuff is brand new just at a discounted price. They also carry local brands! Will return to this place.

Tucked right into the edge of downtown Minneapolis, Midwest Mountaineering is a fantastic store. They offer classes and connections to events, a wide variety of quality brands, discounts and special offers, and even a bouldering cave in their basement. Check this place out if youre in the area
